Why do people compare Battlefield and CoD? Battlefield sits with TF2, Day of Defeat, and Enemy Territory, and CoD sits with deathmatch based games like Quake, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch and Doom. The only place they are similar is the setting which CoD copied from BF2.
I would have to agree, just because its an fps doesnt mean it should be compared. Is it because they are both LOLmilitary shooters? I can name tons of military shooters but that doesnt mean any of them are similar besides their genre. Is it because its a popular multiplayer game? Why not compare Battlefield to Counterstrike? I don't get people's comparisons.

Its like if I were to compare Sins of a Solar Empire to Starcraft 2. 2 TOTALLY different rts in a futuristic setting. That doesn't automatically mean that one of them HAS to be superior.

Classic case of fanboyism is what we has here.

Personally I dislike CoD because it sets a lower standard of FPSs, which other companies tend to want to duplicate. Like octafish said, CoD sits with deathmatch games, and while sometimes fun, aren't exactly innovative.

Quite frankly, I couldn't give a toss about the multiplayer. I'm one of the .3% who's in it for the campaign which, while certainly not particularly deep, is generally a very well presented, visceral thrill ride between finely crafted set pieces.
No hate here.

That may be your opinion, but there's really nothing wrong with a little consistancy. CoD4 was great, most won't deny that. It looks the same, sure. But it plays differently with each installment. Any FPS player can tell a distinct difference between CoD4 and Black Ops (hated Black Ops personally.)

I think the popularity comes from gamers who either like what they've been given so far, or are just hoping that the next installment of CoD will be as good (or better) than CoD4 was. But it's hardly the lowest standard. If you want low standards, I suggest you try MAG or Medal of Honor.

I love the campaigne too! It is what makes the multiplayer better. A good campaine will mean more peole will enjoy a fine crafted multiplayer expirence, like MW2.

Because its infecting FPS's. Other are trying to be more COD-like. Battlefield, i LOVE badcompany 2, then BF3 they introduced "Prone" just like COD. Medal Of Honor had Killstreaks...like COD. Its a good shooter, but thats it. Its good, not outstanding, not amazing. Just good, even worse is the 10 year olds who play it.

Because it's not a good game. It's a simple mechanic. It's easy. That's why it's popular.

That's why easy games like Angry Birds get so much attention.

My main beef with COD is what they did to the franchise. I loved COD 1 and United Offensive, and COD 2 and 3 to some degree.

Somewhat realistic single-player focused WW2 shooters with very solid campaigns, excellent gameplay and satisfying combat. Ooh, those sound effects...

And then they turned it into a series of multiplayer focused bland shooters with shitty short campaigns and pretty awful writing and gameplay.

So as far as I'm concerned, the original Call Of Duty series died at the third installment.

PS: Yes, I'm aware of World At War. And no, just no.

That's really not CoD's fault that other developers lack the creativity to make an original FPS. Can't realistically hold it against them without coming off as spiteful.

Also, about the "prone" position... that SHOULD be a staple in EVERY FPS shooter, period. It has legitimate use and provides tactical advantage, as well as a stable firing platform. There's no excuse not to have it in a game. Besides Prone was available in BF2, adding it to BF3 is just adding a feature that Bad Company 2 was lacking.

Actually most people I know don't hate COD. I know I don't... What we, and by "we" I mean myself and those close to me, hate is the troll section of COD's fandom. You know who I mean, the loudmouthed, obscenity spouting, homophobic, douchebags whom at times sound like they haven't hit puberty. Those are the people we hate but as for COD itself I don't have any major beef with it, though I wouldn't be caught dead paying fifteen bucks for a handful of maps.

Well Black Ops was the first CoD game I ever bought, and I quite like it. Though I hear that it's the same as MW2, which was the same as MW, and so on.

I think this thread is a classic case of "everybody should join me on Red Orchestra 2 because that game takes actual skill"

CoD Games are Rail Shooters.

Lots of People Buy it.
Therefore more of them are made by other Companies because the Stats are High.
Other People are unhappy because it means that at times, other Genres suffer for it.

um...prone was actually taken AWAY from the bad company games, the first battlefields had prone in them. Honestly, why are people thinking COD came up with older mechanics? almost everything from the modern warfare games have been done in battlefield 1942,vietnam,2,2142,and now 3. And 1942 came out in what? 2002? and BF2 2004-5?

To this day i say this about COD

They can be great fun online with friends, or with a good group of players.
Single player is fun to go through once or twice
Story is nothing amazing, but good for some simple militairy action

Overall it doesn't insult, it doesn't try to break new ground, and the only reason it's got such a bad name is the fans...

(although I will say that the DLC is very overpriced in my opinion, but I dont HAVE to buy it so can't complain)

I don't care about CoD. So I don't play it. It's not a bad game series. I've tried but can't get into it. Others like it and they buy it, whatever.
