How do you guys feel about coffee?

I like it myself, but it only seems to make me tired (maybe I've got a screwed up metabolism), so I like to stay off of it.

Yes, I did start this thread because I was hoping some super smart guy might point out why I get tired from drinking coffee.

Caffeine is a psychoactive stimulant (also a central nervous stimulant). It affects dopamine and serotonin like most psychoactive substances do. The half-life of caffeine varies greatly between individuals. A number of individuals react more strongly to the antagonistic properties of caffeine (mood changes, jitters etc) and combined with a short half life this could easily lead to drowsiness and exhaustion. Most psychoactive substances have very individual effects, something evident from more potent drugs.

A friend of mine experiences the same thing, so we tested the hypothesis in a rather unscientific manner: he took about 8 caffeine pills and downed them in some really strong coffee. Two hours later he was sound asleep. At least, we concluded, he wasn't at all stimulated by caffeine.

I don't like coffee because of its taste. At some times i wished I liked it, because I need a boost. At times like these i drink red bull, doesn't taste nice, but I prefer that taste to coffee.
I guess I never learned to drink it, just like alcohol (don't like that taste either)

Must say, I do not use boost for gaming session, only on the job. Red bull dragged me through a crunch time.

If you drink a lot of coffee, too, the caffeine in each cup will give you less of a buzz since you eventually need a base level in your blood to function without cravings. So if you're just meeting that baseline, it really won't affect your sleep too much. It's like alcoholics who need a few drinks in the morning but don't get drunk.

Also, I <3 red eyes.

I formerly drank 5-6 cups of coffee a day managing a small company branch, but as I've grown older ,I've cut back to only two cups of quality coffee, such as ground bean expresso at home to start my day,and an Americano(2 shots of expresso and hot water purchased at Douwe Egberts at the casino where I work nights. I brew a weak cup of hot tea and snack on dark chocolate cookies later in the evening.. I have a friend at work that also will brew a pot of Sumatra coffee he roasts at home ,so I would probably throw your coffee out too.LOL

Just switched to decaf a few months ago. It was a multi-step process. I'd been drinking2 or 3 cups of coffee each morning for about 20 years.

I do still spring for the occasional cappuccino for the heart buzz, but very rarely.

I probably throw away better coffee than most of you drink.
so you're wasteful? That's all I gathered from you saying that.
Who pissed in your coffee this morning?
Erm, nobody? Did you confuse me for an upset person? Np, it happens.. Perhaps my meaning was lost somewhere in the vast series of tubes that is the internet.

HalfShadow, I'll call you out. I happen to work for the world's greatest coffee company, Intelligentsia Coffee. Currently drinking a Kenya auction lot named Caucas, last month it was a Rwanda Golden Cup winner named Kanzu, and before that it was the most expensive and award-winning coffee of all time: the Panama Geisha Esmeralda. $200/lb. Beat that. Oh wait, you can't, because it's a record-setting bean.

If I recall correctly from my high school health classes, caffeine actually induces a bit of an adrenaline rush, which is why you start feeling awake and alert right after drinking a cup of coffee. However, because you can deplete the body's adrenaline supplies, drinking more coffee doesn't induce the same level of adrenaline as the first time. The lack of adrenaline in your system is also what causes that after-caffeine crash. There are a number of other effects as well, but I don't remember exactly what they are, besides blood vessels expanding and whatnot.
