So those of you Escapists who collect things, whether they be LE/CE's of games, little pre-order bonuses, action figures, LEGO sets, vintage gaming consoles and games, comics and related material, what-have-you... What are your personal quirks?
Do you collect them in hopes that they will be worth something someday?
Do you open boxes to display figures, statues, LEGO sets, etc?
Or do you just collect to show off your likes?

Myself and my wife, we collect RPG maps and frame them and hang them on our wall. We also collect WoW figures and open them so we can set them up on display. I used to collect WH40k and other miniatures but had to sell them because of money issues (biggest regret in this area). Also we have started collecting vintage consoles and games because we've been finding them in donation sales and yard sales where the owner/seller doesn't have a clue on price. Example: Found a Zombies Ate my Neighbor for Genesis with a pristine box and manual AND a copy of EA's Rings of Power, Collectors Edition for Genesis with book AND map... Super rare apparently. Also got a loose copy of Battletoads/Double Dragon... plus tons of other vintage games.

So what are your quirks/collections?

Well, collecting in itself is a quirk for my generation as far as I can tell. For example, I own the complete collection of Evangelion and my friends were pretty amazed. Not because it was the complete collection but because I physically owned a copy of the anime. They happily buy collector's editions for videogames and books but film, t.v. and anime don't really get much love. I'd like to discuss this more in-depth but alas, that'd be breaking the rules.

Not really, I have an army of Orks, WH40k, but that ended after a while, still have the, about 2000 points worth basic group but wouldn't call that collecting.
My dad collected post marks when younger and has a pretty cool set.
He also has special edition Nintendo consoles and games and he likes to collect DVD sets of TV-Series for later use when he's retired. Also rare LP/Vinyl music is a thing he likes, especially old Rock N' Roll bands.
So he's a bit of a collector, I still haven't picked up that habbit though.

Not really. I used to be big into collecting rocks. I still pick an occasional stone if I find it interesting. Besides that, I have video games, some Stephen King books, and comics.

I have always collected comics, horror movies, Tabletop RPGs, Happy faces and skulls. They have been my go to happy places. Now I have a son, and when he is a little older they are gonna be something I'm sharing with him.

In the past ten years I've built up a WARHAMMER 40k Chaos/Deamon army, but due to misfortune... In one fell swoop, 99% got broken beyond repair. And, now I can't afford that hobby. So the 1% sit behind a glass case, and I pretend they are untouchable.

Well I have my video game and console collection. Not the biggest in the world but I'm happy about it. I keep all my games around simply because I want to play most of them at least one more time.

Despite being intangible, I technically collect Pokemon in the games. One reason I'm looking forward to Pokemon bank is so I can keep a bunch of them safe in the bank while freeing up room for more. I've talked about my 350 Reshiram collection on the forums before, so I guess I collect them so I can never be without my favorite Pokemon I guess. I'm a weirdo like that.

I tend to think of myself as a book collector. Right now my collection is rapidly reaching 3000 tomes, with quite a bit of them being paperbacks. I almost have the entire collection of Stephen King novels, and currently working on reading and cataloging Ayn Rands bibliography.

I've also recently started to collect vinyl records, of which i have almost a hundred. There's just something about the warm sound that records produce, that I adore.

I collect older games because, for the most part, these are the games I wanted as a kid but never had a chance to get for whatever reason (ie: my parents couldn't afford $40 - $50 games every time I wanted one). I never owned a Sega console either, up until the Dreamcast anyway. I try to get the games complete but I settle for the most part on cart only.

Wow, I had a nice Chaos set back in the late 90's that was something to the tune of 20k+ points if deployed at once... Destroyed when a shed fell apart during hurricane. Irony is the shed was supposed to be hurricane proof whereas the other wood shed my dad and I built out of a deck we ripped apart stayed up wuth no damage.

I collect vinyl records. The reason being is because I find CD's to be pointless when I can just stream or download the music (though if an album isn't on vinyl, I will settle and get the CD), and I like seeing the album art being larger than ~5x5 inches. I'm not looking out for really rare stuff so I can just sell it later, though I don't mind paying a little extra for like limited edition colored vinyl. I want to support the artists I enjoy while having a physical copy, so vinyl is what I go for.

Well, the main thing that I (used to, since I lost my job) collect was MLP things...

Comics, mini-figurines, collecta-cards, DVD's.... Anything really...

Why? Well, it's something that I enjoy, and having an entire wall covered in pony-stuff is sorta the hope by the end of it all...
Then again, I'd need to find another job to be able to continue....

There is a hope that one day it'd be worth something, but I would never sell it all... Just simply knowing that I could sell everything for x-thousand is reason enough to hang on to it all...

Of course, my father did the same thing with records...
his Pink Floyd collection.... wow...
Looked up one of the limited editions he's got... going for about ~1.5k now-a-days... for a single disc of vinyl...
He'd never sell them, and neither would I... It's just knowing you have something that is genuinely hard to come by...

Wait... I HAD a personal quirk behind wasting spending money on them LE/SE/CE/Day One version of video games? I thought buying them because I can (as well as sometimes supporting the localization of said game) was just the natural response to buying them in the first place...

Although, I did end up selling the CE of Arkham City (just to buy the GOTY version) and got about 2.5x the amount I spent on it... I don't regret my decision, though... (Even though I liked the Blu-Ray copy of Batman: Gotham Knight that came with it... despite where it came out of...) It just taught me that games like that, that are bound to get a GOTY-esque edition, I should wait about a year or two until the GOTY version comes out with everything the game could offer at around the same price the regular game went for when it came out...

Other than that, I buy them mainly to support the game's localization... I can't wait til February of next year to pick up the CE of Tales of Symphonia Chronicles!! (I also will say that the Milla Maxwell figurine from the CE of Tales of Xillia was fine as hell, man! ...Oh, and the game is badass, too...)

I can't say too much on other collectible stuff... Those things comes "naturally" to me, in retrospect... (except MLP shirts... especially the one's that reference other stuff like Breaking Bad, FLCL, or Game of Thrones... My wallet hates me more than I realize...)
