So, according to a press release found here... http://www.mcvuk.com/press-releases/43617/Capcomrsquos-Resident-Evil-5-Collectorrsquos-Edition-Exposed

RE5 is going to have a SUPER COOL collector's edition. And all I can say is "Meh." Maybe I worked in gaming retail too long or maybe I'm just a horrible, jaded person but I don't find their selection too impressive.

A metal case. A behind the scenes bonus disc. A messanger bag, a figurine...blah, blah blah. Does that really justify a $90 price point? Or are Collector's Editions just another way to siphon hard earned money out of fanboys and naive gamers? If someone walked up to you on the street and offered you a cheaply made purse and action figure for $30 you'd most likely say no and go about your merry way. But slap "RESIDENT EVIL" or "WORLD OF WARCRAFT" on it and suddenly people turn into Pavlov's dogs.

So what do you think? Are Collector's Editions as asinine as I believe or can you find some way to justify them that doesn't involve "ZOMG, Chris Redfield is soooo awesome!!1"?

I have never bought a collector's edition of anything before. Except for the Bourne series one...but that's different. It came with an almost-real Bourne passport for god's sake. I see collector's things as a waste of money because their use is limited to bragging rights and/or showcasing. For that, I don't think I will ever buy one of these. Well, except if it came with a coupon to Mrs. Sittler's Homebaking...

I like messanger bags1
(That was an unintentional typeo, but I leave it for the purpose of the thread)

Not worth it, but cool nonetheless.

The God of War 2 special edition was great. The extras on it were nearly as long as the extended LOTR trilogy :D

Luckily, Dastardos is here to save the day! We posted almost at the same time and his thread, complete with pictures, can be found here.

If the bag looked like some T-Virus biohazard container or something, I would be all over it. Sadly, i'm disappointed. I will stick to the basic version.

Well, the game is $60 to start with. So for $30 you get a messenger bag, a necklace, an action figure, and a patch, plus a metal case and some extra related DVDs. If you're into the series, that's a pretty nice set of extras.

I bring my lunch to work in my Fallout 3 lunch box several times a week.

I like collectors edition games as long as they don't cost too much over their original price. But judging by what's in this one, it probably will cost quite a bit...

I dont know this one seems ALMOST worth the 90 doller price tag (this coming from somone who has never played a Res Evil game). Of course it wont "cost" them even 45 dollers to make all of this stuff but its all about profits.

The only collector's edition I'm going to buy is Diablo 3.

...Thank God I didn't buy Neverwinter Nights 2 CE.

In the UK, collectors editions are not that much mroe expensive than the normal edition, so it is most of the time worth paying that extra £4/$6 for what you get.

I saw the lunchbox edition of fallout 3 for PC today for cheaper than i bought my standard copy. I was annoyed =(

If you read the FIRST post, you would have seen that all this increases the price by 50%. Which for fans isn't all that bad for so much exclusive stuff, but for the average purchaser it's completely unnecessary. Hence this being a 'Collector's Edition', not the default box set. It's for people who want more paraphernalia. Go figure.

My collector's edition HL2 tin was a very cool present, and I still wear the black shirt as a normal item of clothing. The rest of the box - a little booklet with some art and character development process stuff - was cool to have a look at, but not something you'd keep for long... unless you were studying it to get into the industry or something, I guess.

Collectors items, whether a special edition game or card or figurine or whatever aren't supposed to have general appeal - they're intended to appeal to those more interested in that subject, who take pleasure in getting that little bit more of an insight into or to own a little bit more of their favourite world. Nothing more, nothing less as far as I see it. It's not cynical of companies to cater to these people, they're just allowing fans to get more immersed or whatever. 'sall good.

Well I'm probably going to get it. I have a whole collection of nerdy game related stuff. I'm a sap for it =[
