Books are costly as hell, but check your local Craigslist. I just bought one of my books (normally $100) for $20 on there. Same for Amazon, check for used copies.

You'd be surprised how much cash you can save. I spend, generally, around $200 a semester on books, with an average of 14 units (four or five classes).
^This can work, depending on luck.

Another thing you can do after your 1st semester is done is just hang out in a public area and ask folks if they have books that they'd like to sell. You can usually work out a deal that will have you both happy - the seller gets more cash than the bookstore would offer and you bought a book for less than the cost of a used copy. High-fives all around and then studying, eating ramen, and dreaming of a mythical beast called 'clean laundry'.

Something I found useful was that for the last two years I managed to get a house share with classmates (who are also good friends). This means that we get a couple of copies of the 'core' books between four of us (actually six if I include two of the guys girlfriends) and then get other individual books as needed (E.g. for dissertation). Keep them all in the communal room bookshelf and also do group revision, papers etc with the core books.

As a London based student I'd actually complain that most of my loan (2/3 to 3/4) goes on rent. Not sure how that is in other countries.

Out of that four, psychology will probably be the worst. Especially cause you normally need to most up-to-date edition.
Then Maths, English will be fine and so will Philosophy.
I did Philosophy in first year and I didn't buy any of the books for it.I ended up getting the equivalent of a B+.
