Hellboy. Best introduction to comics ever.

When you're done with that and B.P.R.D., read Y: The Last Man, The Walking Dead, and like everyone's suggesting, Transmetropolitan. It is an absolutely brilliant piece of literature. Watchmen isn't bad, but it's vastly overrated.
Afterwards, read Scott Pilgrim, and everything by Brian Wood. His writing is universally excellent.

Best graphic novel I think I've ever read- certainly the most memorable

and

[a href="http://www.amazon.com/Pride-Baghdad-Brian-K-Vaughan/dp/1401203140"]Pride of Baghdad![/a]

Gives a fictional back-story to the true report of 4 African Lions after escaping from the Baghdad Zoo during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq
A few people now have said Transmetropolitan is good I shall look into that.

The other book however does have lions so it cannot be bad.

Thanks, and I appreciate the links and the pictures.

Preacher, Y THE lAST Man, Runaways, The Walking Dead, Rising Stars, Midnight Nation, Sandman...there´s so many of them!
fair play you have named a few, I do appreciate that.

No idea why but I am drawn to the name midnight nation so I will probably look into that first.

Thanks
You´re welcome. Midnight Nation is awesome, a lot of my friends who arent into comics liked it. It´s a 12-issue mini-series that has been collected in a single graphic novel.More info in:

Watchmen
Transmetropolitan (10 part trade series, but worth it)
Kick-Ass (but don't hold your breath of for the sequel)
Batman Graphic novels: Year One, The Man who Laughs, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Hush, Mad Love, Dark Knight Returns (I'm a bit of a batman fan)

AVOID SCOTT PILGRIM
Ah but I can read Scott Pilgrim for free so major plus there for me cause I'm really cheap lol

I liked the kick-ass film so I am going on a blind assumption that I will like the book.

I have just completed Arkham Asylum (the game, yeah I am that far behind the times) that is what got my thinking about reading comics/graphic novels in the first place.

thanks I will look into some of those :D

Um...yeah about Kick-Ass the movie, it has a much more optimistic ending then the graphic novel which has one of the most nihilistic ending I have ever seen.

I read Scott Pilgrim on for free (SHHHHHH don't tell anyone) and I felt somehow ripped off.

Also Read the Arkham Asylum :Serious House on Serious Earth graphic novel its um... different
I did hear the comic book was more brutal than the film (I'm on about kick ass now I should have said at the start)

secret safe with me, I'm just borrowing them of a friend as he said Scott Pilgrim was awesome and I have had a few recommendations on here bout it. Whether I will lose them within about 5 mins of having them through is a different matter.

I was looking into the Arkham Asylum book, it looked good, has the game got anything to do with it?
The Arkham Asylum game has the same basic set up of the inmates taking over the asylum but aside from that no.

Sandman is probably my favourite, but it only picks up after the end of the first arc, with is issue 8. I'd recommend skipping it, even if continuity might suffer later.

Other than that, anything Warren Ellis has ever written, but specially Transmetropolitan.
Ok If I do read it I will take your advice, it does save me some money as I dont have to buy so many :D

Thanks for the recommendation

Like most people will say Scott Pilgrim does own on another level.
I know you said comics and graphic novels but when you read as much as I do the line isn't that massive but have you tried looking into One Piece? Or the more popular Dragonball or DBZ, some people would say "OMFG NARUTO FTW" or the same for Bleach but I dunno what all the fuss is about.

But getting back on track, my collection of choice which I'd recommend:
Watchmen
V for Vendetta
Dark Knight Returns
Killing Joke
Kick Ass
Punisher - Welcome back Frank
Hellboy
Wolverine and Deadpool (the comic)
of course Scott Pilgrim
Ultimate Fantastic Four
Transformers I think it was the Armada series I read
The Ultimate Avengers (I borrowed something on the lines of this from my mums boyfriend awhile ago so not to sure if that was the name, but it was The Avengers)
oh and if the whole Manga thing isn't an option for being odd, maybe trying The Marvel Mangaverse would be a good place to start (the 5 or 6 issue mini series)

I hear All Star Superman is one of the best out there (i havn't read it, just heard from numerous review sites.
OH GOOD GOD THIS! All-Star Superman is nothing short of brilliant.

Also, some DC monthlies coming out next month that I would recommend, if you're interested in starting with that kind of thing.

Secret Six #31 - Secret Six is a comic about a group of anti-villain mercenaries for hire. It's written in a deeply dark and comical way and, in my selective reading of the title, it hasn't failed to make me laugh. #31 is the start of a new storyline so you wouldn't be jumping into the middle of a story but you might be confused by unfamiliar characters. It's easy enough to read previous information on the web though.

Power Girl #22 - Power Girl seems like a pretty fun book (I'm not reading it myself) and has been held in high regard for quite some time. I've read some of the older issues and it has a fun, lighthearted tone to it that is missing from a lot of comics coming out in this day and age. It's just coming of the back of a huge story at the moment but this issue should be the start of something new. Or, alternatively, how can you not want a book with a cover like this [http://www.dccomics.com/media/product/1/7/17226_400x600.jpg]?

Xombi #1 - A fresh, new title. Should be easy for absolutely anybody to get into. Xombi is about scientist David Kim, who is immortal and (from what I'm led to believe) gets up to all sorts of supernatural hi-jinks. Also, Nuns with guns [http://www.dccomics.com/dcu/comics/?cm=17612] (in the second issue, at the very least).

There are a fuckton of great comics out there that I'm not mentioning as well. I just felt like highlighting those three because they're cool.
secret Six sounds good as I do like a laugh and if a new thing is kicking off all the better :D

Power Girl I will ask one of my friends about I think he has some copies kicking around somewhere or another.

Xombi also sounds good as well.

Thanks for the recommendations and the info about each

Without a doubt, I'd pick Sandman. Holy nuts that one will blow you away if you are into weird fantasy.

If a you want something more traditional with superheroes, I just finished Batman: The Long Halloween, and I gotta recommend it.

Personally, I think this would make a great addition to you since it's a well known comic:

<spoiler=Nice Comic to Read>

Give it a try! I admit I didn't get to see all of it, but it's a special addition I laughed a lot to! Enjoy! (only if you wish to read it) Which of course I think was taken as a personal joke but I thought it was honestly cool.
haha that does look awesome, if I come across it at any point I shall give it a read.

thanks :D

Please avail yourself of the grand majesty of the library, not only do they bury the lies and false histories there but most now have pretty decent comics compilation collections, graphic novels, etc. "Understanding Comics," by Scott McCloud, is essential (I was gonna say 'seminal' but I didn't wanna make you laugh) if you wanna start creating your own stuff.

V For Vendetta(1981) is the greatest comic I've read in my life.
I agree. I had the pleasure of meeting artist David Lloyd and he was prety cool. He even drew a skecth of the main character on my cpy of the book.
.-. You lucky duck, how did that happen?
I went to a comics convention (yes, i am that nerdy, lol) here in Portugal. He was one of the main guests and was available to talk to the fans and draw a few sketches.

I usually go to these conventions to buy cheaper comics, meet some creators and to get my books signed (and sometimes a few sketches). Unfortunately, these conventions are few and far between in my country...
