Recently comics have been sparking my interests so I decided to give them a try. I'm making this topic because I'm asking for comic book suggestions the escapist would suggest for a first time reader.

I've already gotten three that I believe were the best choices for me. The first one I got was Watchmen. That was the first on my list since it is said to be one of if not the best graphic novel of all time. The second is the first volume of The Sandman. I chose that one because I knew it was a critically acclaimed series and also because I have a interest in dark surreal artwork so I thought it would be a good fit for me. And finally the last one I got was The Dark Knight Returns because I know that like Watchmen it was the game changer of the comic book industry.

Well that's what I got and I would like to hear your suggestions for a first time reader like myself. (P.S. I kinda want to stick with D.C. right now, just cause I got all my book suggestions from this site http://www.dccomics.com/sites/watchmen/?action=after_watchmen and they all seem to involve subjects that really gets my interests)

well it depends on if you are going to buy comics online or go to a local shop.
Both options are fine online gives you a huge selection to choose from. while local shop you can talk to people and get suggestions on comics.

Myself I went with the local shop option, the guy that owns it is really knowledgeable on the various comics. and can easily suggest things that I might like to read.

If you can find a copy of "The Establishment" read through that.

also recently read " The end league" both of those are slightly twisted but I thought that they where very well done short comics series.

Transmetropolitan. I can't recommend this series enough. I know a few comic shops that will sell it to you and offer a full refund if you don't like it, because no one has ever come back and said it was bad.

Finish Sandman, it gets better. The first volume is the weakest of the series and it's still pretty terrific. Fables in Exile is pretty good up through volume 10.

Identity Crisis is a pretty good one book story with all the Justice League characters.

Joker: The Man Who Laughs, Killing Joke and Joker: Devil's Advocate are all great Joker stories.

The Boys is pretty good, particularly if you think main stream hero books are a bit out there.

Y the Last man is pretty good.

Preacher is another classic series you might like.

The Walking Dead is really good, DMZ. Criminal is top notch too. Ex Machina is interesting.

Yeah, I had my eye on Transmetropolitan. Kind of a Gonzo style comic in the same vein as Hunter S. Thompson. I'll defiantly checking that out.

Also I heard that there's a spin off comic involving Death from The Sandman. Is that any good?

There are two in fact. Death the High Cost of Living and Death: The Time of Your Life. Both of 'em are pretty good, though high cost of living is the better of the two.

I advise finding authors you like, they're often consistent in quality.

I'd recommend Warren Ellis (Next Wave: Agents of Hate, The Authority, Transmetropolitian, Ultimates Galatus Trilogy), Garth Ennis (The Boys, Preacher), Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and Mark Millar (Kickass, Wanted, Ultimates 1 and 2, The Authority). Also would recommend authors such as Neil Gaimon, Grant Morrison and Brian K. Vaughn.

Also even though you're more DC focused at the moment, I'd recommend Ultimates vol 1 and 2, along with the Galactus trilogy. It's a more simplified and very enjoyable look at the marvel universe.

Besides the already mentioned stuff, I'd recommend Kingdom Come.

This gent makes a good call on Authority and Next Wave. League of Extraordinary Gentleman is far better than the film would lead you to believe. That said, I actually enjoyed the film of V more than the book (which was still good).

-The Goon
-The Walking Dead
-Deadpool of course
-Bone is more kid friendly but good none the less.
-The works of Doug TenNapel (Creator of Earthworm Jim) who did Creature Tech, Gear, and Black Cherry. They have a bit of christian undertones but it's not preachy.
-Hellboy

Anything you can get your hands on really. There's not just one genre of comics. Get anything you can find a learn what you like and don't like.

Check out V for Vendetta, written by Alan Moore, the dude behind Watchmen. Batman: Year One is really good as well, although it's a tad short.

Watchmen is good first choice, same with Sandman. Although the first volume of Sandman is, as previously mentioned pretty weak compared to the rest.

Other nice places to start are Bone, From Hell, League of Extraordinairy Gentlemen, Preacher and Lucifer (Sandman spinoff, you really should get to at least volume 4 of Sandman before starting this).

Then again, there are plenty of good ones, so take your time and look at different ones. Find the ones you like. =)

Sticking to DC is a good plan, you may want to go and look at some Vertigo comics, though. Technically part of DC- has some of the best comics I have ever read!

Its a bit of a departure from the other comics you've got, but I highly recommend Fables. The premise may be sound a bit off putting (Fairy Tale characters are driven from their homes and are now living in New York) but both the characters and the stories are consistently well done and very entertaining.
