Actually I'm not sure that this could be considered a victory in any real sense, despite being an amusing stunt.

Understand that Westboro is out to garner attention, and they did that. While it wasn't violent they provoked a reaction. Also looking at the way the protest went down, I think a lot of ammo was actually provided for them to continue this.

I think it's a situation where the nerd community more "broke even" than won anything really.

Somehow I really doubt it. Considering this church is made up of only one family and EVERY other church thinks they're lunatics, I highly doubt it'll catch on over here =p

Not to mention the whole "counter-protest" thing happens everywhere the WBC goes. While I expected there would be one, occasionally people will do something a bit more ballsy and creative [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7iXbWsO4ik], which is why I'm actually a bit disappointed. If there's anything the people at Comic-Con have, it's creativity. For example, Mega 64 is attending, right? Their entire internet career revolves around being assholes to total strangers, so imagine if they had done a sketch where they dress up and bug the WBC. Or someone dressed as Batman gets up close to one of them and screams "SWEAR TO ME!" (Due to the whole "idol worshiping" thing) Of course, this is all assuming the WBC's police escort don't mind someone getting at least somewhat close to them <_<

At least there were some funny signs. ("God hates Jedi!" "Support fiction, read the Bible!")

Sorry if I don't feel the same sense of "victory" the rest of you guys feel, but I must say I am deeply disappointed with what the comic-con attendants did. I know they did it for "good intentions" but sadly, it doesn't work like they think it does. Counter protesting the WBC is not a good idea, as it just gives them more publicity. If it gives them publicity, they win, no matter the outcome.

I thought we nerds knew better than this? The only way to kill a troll is to ignore it. But I must admit, some of those signs were pretty funny.
