Comics have always interested me, but I didn't grow up near anywhere that sold them, so could never get into them. Now that I am an adult, with a internet connection, I can get any comic I want. However, I am a sucker for continuity and knowing the hole story, and with comics its often difficult to know were exactly to start, were new stories start and end etc... so I am looking for suggestions of comics to read and were to start with some specific comics

I like the darkness, captain america, wonder woman, the hulk, batman, and any other you can suggest

Batman: Year One

Superman: Birthright

Justice League: Year One

Green Arrow: Year One

Ultimate Spider-Man Vol.1

Thats all I've got for now, but if I think of anything else I'll be sure to post again. (Also, sorry for the obvious DC bias, when it comes to Marvel if its not Spider-Man I don't really care.)

If you don't dive too deep into Marvel/DC stuff, you won't run into many continuity problems.

My continuity free suggestions:

Runaways
Fables
Y: The Last Man
Transmetropolitan

If you really want to mess with continuity things, then...um, for Marvel, I guess read New Avengers (the one that started around 2005) and the big events (Civil War, Secret Invasion, etc). I'm not well versed in DC. Otherwise, find a character you like, start reading, and if you run into continuity questions, use Wikipedia. Aside from the X-men (whose backstories are an absolute mess), most stories don't ask for too much continuity awareness on your part.

Fables.
You can get the deluxe edition, which combines 10 issues per book and some extra goodies. It's a good way to get into the series.

Also Sandman.

My experience with comics has been that the best thing to do really is to just jump into whatever you want to read. I started out with Hell Boy because I was afraid of dealing with continuity. But I've become an avid DC reader, and while I can't talk about Marvel, I can tell you that it's pretty hard to go wrong with DC stuff.

If you really enjoy the continuity stuff, you might actually find Flashpoint (which has now been collected in trade) to be a really good jumping on point. You won't need any real knowledge of what happened before to understand what's going on, it's a really awesome read, and it'll finish by dropping you right into the New 52 universe.

After that, all of the New 52 series have one worth of trades, so you could pick a hero you're interested in, and grab the first trade, then catch up on the remaining issues.

Wonder Woman (who you mentioned liking) isn't bad at all, and there are some really good Batman series (there are now, I believe, five Batman titles running right now [and that's not even counting other members of the "bat family"]) Plain old vanilla Batman is really good, the Court of Owls storyline it's been working through is really really good, and even contained one of the best issues of any comic I've ever read. I'm not going to give it away, but I will say that by the time you're done spinning the comic in every direction imaginable your mind will be as blown as it possibly can be. Batman: The Dark Knight and Batman and Robin are also quite good. Batman and Robin in particular is quite interesting just because Damian makes for a really interesting Robin. I would avoid Batman: Detective Comics though, which hasn't been quite as good, and while I like Batman Incorporated, if you do decide to read it you should keep in mind that even if you have read all of the parts that came before it's still nonsensical.

The other Bat family title that's really really good is Batgirl. Trust me on this one, it's a choice that would be impossible to regret.

I would also suggest Red Lanterns, which has been awesome, Green Lantern (written by Geoff Johns), or Green Lantern: New Guardians (which incorporates members from every color of Lantern corps). Aquaman (again written by Johns) is also awesome. And if you've got a taste for the metaphysical, Captain Atom is really good.

Of course there are a ton of other good series as well. I don't read them all, but I read way more than I ought to, so if you've got a question about a particular series, ask away, I read about half of them, so there's a 50-50 shot I can give you an answer.

batman hush will get you hooked forever and heart of hush was a great follow up. also read the killing joke first since that gets mentioned a lot in batman comics. other than that batman death and the maidens, batman and son, and the Resurrection of ras al guel were amazing.

What about deadpool? If you include deadpool you are the perfect specimen of a human being.

Batman: Year One is the beginning of the Dark Knight's tale, and generally the first place to go when reading Batman comics. Saying that, Dark Knight Returns is also a great read, though this is generally considered to be set towards the end of Batman's time. Nevertheless, reading the latter won't screw up anything in terms of who characters are and what's gone on - as long as you know some DC lore (who Green Arrow is, Batman's enemies, and some info about the Robins). Also, after you've read Year One, make sure you read the Long Halloween. It's great, and is also set near the beginning of Batman's time under the cowl.
Also, Knightfall is brilliant, though I personally thought part one and two were better than the third, they are all worth reading.

In terms of Marvel, I recommend big events, stuff like Avengers Disassembled, House of M, Civil War, Secret Invasion, Siege, Fear Itself etc (in that order). The Cable and Deadpool series is good too if you're a fan, and it runs parallel with the other main stories.

But if you stories with a smaller cast, then grab a super-hero and start with volume one.

I've been known to dabble in the Deadpool books. Cable and Deadpool was great, And I still find myself throwing an issue of Deadpool Team-up in with my pile of Superman books.

If you're into Aliens, try Labyrinth but be warned, it's pretty fucked up. Even for Aliens standards.

As much as I love superhero comics, all that continuity nonsense bugs the crap out of me, so I tend to stick with self-contained series and mini-series. Some excellent stuff to be read there!

Batman: Hush
Batman: The Killing Joke
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth

Watchmen
Sandman
Transmetropolitan (my personal favourite of all time)
100 Bullets

If you want to read Captain America you have to read Brubakers run, he's been writing Cap since 2004 and it's really easy to follow if you'r new.
The numbering goes as followed: (vol. 5) #1-50, (vol. 1) #600-619, (vol. 6) #1-current.
Another great read is Wolverine: Old Man Logan it's set in the future so you wont have any continuity problems.

And if you want to start reading Hulk I'd suggest starting at Planet Hulk (and maybe it's follow-up World War Hulk, but it's nowhere near as good as Planet Hulk).

I think I'll hijack a bit of this threat and ask the following question.

Seeing as hardcopies are pretty hard to come by where I live, is there a site that offers digital copies for sale?

kind of like a comic-steam?
If you catch my drift.
