I love Empowered, Girl Genius and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Empowered is good because it's such a laugh and Emp is rather loveable in a pathetic way

I'm loving the Ultimate Marvel imprint at the minute, got some good arcs going on
DC's Green Lantern/Blackest Night looks set to be worth a read

If it's not web comics *hisses under his breath at the very word* then check out Johnny The Homocidal Maniac... it's possibly the best comic ever written in my eyes.
Don't get the individual issues, of which there are only 7, get the compendium that has all of them and a good few extras too... I have both I love it so much.
Hopefully it's up your street, if not and you want something more serious, sin city or 300 graphic novals by Frank Miller, the watchmen graphic noval by Alan Moore, the preacher graphic novals by Garth Ennis, or the sandman graphic novals by Neil Gaiman.
Yeah i goot JTHM i also got squee did he write any other comics

Depends on what you've already read. I would advise Watchmen or The Sandman series but the problem is that they're very popular and most comic fans have probably already read them.

Other than those, I can advise Maus (But that's the same with the two above), there's some graphic novel about immigration which is very good, but I can't remember its name right now (I'll see if I can remember later), The Umbrella Acadamy and any Alan Moor books I'd advise (From Hell, Watchmen etc.)

EDIT: The Arrival was the title of that comic.

My experience with comics extends to a few graphic novels, and some Collectors Editions from Marvel, but that's because I'm a sucker for a good story.
So despite the occasional oddity in my favourite Super Heroes lives the story always keeps me hooked.

My list (rather long, I have lots of spare time)and no links, google them yourself, you're a big boy/girl, no need to hold your hand.

*Ahem* Penny arcade, CAD-Comic, VGCats, Missmab, twokinds, all of the snafu-comics, digital unrest, dueling analogs, least I could do, LFG Comic, Sabrina Online (it's not what you think....srsly), the slackerz, nerf now, gg guys, gamebrit, geist panik, teh gladiators (yes, it's teh not the), house pets comic, femgasm (suggest only if your mind can conceive to wierd and stupid humor), head trip, egscomics and um... uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, there's one more I forget its name (all of this from memory, bookmarks are the devil!).... oh and three panel soul, i "think" seven skulls (also chipmunk bay) might be coming back, along with omega blue, yosh! is alright i guess, fanboys-online and finally (I swear, last one)...I seriously forget the name, its a comic based on real people playing a virtual game (like matrix style, but rpg) fantasy something or whatnot. I think it's linked from drow tales (which has some links and a good comic there too).
