TF2, now you can buy your way to success and get bitched at during trading sessions because your novelty hats don't live up to someones high standards. Actually, I never really liked TF2 to begin with but I would still play it from time to time, now its a pain in the ass.

Halo & Modern Warfare, equal amounts.

Sony fanboys ruined a fucking game system, I loved the PS2 and looked forward to the PS3 but the PS3 started out priced for the fanatics and by the time the price came down to a semi-reasonable level it was occupied by idiots frothing at the mouth.

World of Warcraft, another great game occupied by ass-clowns and about 20 people that weren't complete ass-clowns.
---
For the positive though, Minecraft has a great community that comes up with awesome ideas to make the game better.

Some people say WoW, but really atleast in my experience about 80-90% of the people are alright. 5% are other realm gerks or idiots in your dungeons or BG's. 5% are your own realm of the same and trade chat trolls so fun to make fun of. Or to egg them on when 2 trolls battle it out.
And 10% are just noobs.
You always get people who just hate you and you hate them. I have many a enemies in WoW before I went horde than back to my old ally server. Most of my old enemies, I don't know what became of them nor care. I'm in a guild with good friends and enjoying raiding, and gankin horde.

Ruined community is CoD, just because of the 12 yr olds and trolls. Funny thing is I want to renew my live and play Black ops since I got it for Christmas. I'm sure it won't be to bad one I get the hang of it again. MWF2 was mostly fine if u turned your mic off..... which I need a new one since I broke mine and its a pain to mute everyone when you can constantly having people leave and join. But I ramble.

I think Minecraft has a pretty solid community. For the most part great maps and mods come out that add a lot to the game. (there are most defenatly idiots, but not as much as some other games)

Starcraft 2, I liked the original Starcraft and I got into the beta, then I realized that everybody who plays starcraft multiplayer is a douchebag with no grasp on the concept of good sportmanship, then I stopped playing. I never bought the game, thanks for saving me 60 euro, Blizz!

And now we wait for the flames to roll in.
I don't play games online, but from what I can tell just from visiting the Escapist here and hearing people whine, I think the same could be said about EVERY FUCKING GAME THAT HAS ONLINE MULTIPLAYER.
...Hence why I don't play games online. Also that's hardly Blizzards fault.
WOW 12 MINUTES! A NEW PERSONAL BEST :D

You have a point, but in my opinion none is worse than the starcraft 2 multiplayer. Look at CoD, You have fratdicks and angry thirteen year olds playing along with nerds and such. Annoying, but tolerable, while starcraft 2's multiplayer base is made up entirely of nerds being dickheads.
One time during the beta, I had an opponent leave the game because I couldn't tell him how many "operations per second" I could do, It was my second game.

And that's my beef with online strategy games, it's not long before the "strategy" part of the game goes out of the window and into the ground, instead you have 'how fast you can execute the first order operative' matches.

Oh, and I wasn't blaming Blizzard, I was thanking them for giving me the insight not to buy a game for nerds with self-diagnosed "mental issues".
o_O "Operations per second?" "first order operative?" What? o_O

In any case I'll have to take your word for it as I haven't played a game online since Dark Forces II YEARS ago.
Also may I draw your attention to the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. [http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/3/19/]
and that is EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

"Operations Per Second" haven't heard this of this one either, I'm assuming it is how fast you can do shit in starcraft.

"First order Operative" My bad, I used the wrong term, it's late. I've fixed my original post with the right term and an edit explaining it. :)
Oh "first order optimal strategy" that makes sense. In other words, who can Zerg Rush who the fastest. Gotchta. ¬_¬

As for "Operations Per Second", yeah kinda what I figured it meant too, but wasn't sure. I can't imagine how that'd be determined though. And unless you're an android or fucking Superman, I can't imagine your "Operations per Second" would be very high; and even then, if I recall my time playing Starcraft, you spent a lot of time waiting on stuff. "We require more minerals" "We require more Vespine Gas" Construct additional Cylons... er I mean Pylons. :Þ

Also your explanation regarding nerds was unnecessary, I got what you meant.
Starcraft 2 isn't a strategy game for everyone. It's less like, say, Advanced Wars, Civilization, or Company of Heroes where you have to think tactically and macro tends to play a bigger role than micro. It's more like Blitzkrieg Chess where you need to be able to react quickly, build and execute strategies on the fly and ultimately play a game where even your queen needs to look out for those pesky pawns.

SC2 accelerates things a bit, but it still sticks to that basic game play from SC1.

Ultimately though it does just come back to whether or not you're having fun. If someone else waving their dick in the air ruins it you may need to question why you're even playing online. You just need a thick skin to play online because ultimately you're going to deal with antisocial 13 year olds who need that social bubble the internet creates to shelter them from the terrors of real world interaction. And FOOS (Cheese strategies) are usually un-done by basic level scouting. You'll never get 6 pooled if you spot that spawning pool mid-construction.

And your APM is fairly irrelevant. Beyond a sheer minimum to demonstrate you can play SC2 (or have a pulse for that matter) it does just eventually hit a brick wall where more APM means nothing. The gaming community actually has more respect for a player that can do more with lower APM than the guy who cheeses out his APM doing basically nothing.

As for games ruined by their community? Often times its just not the case. I'd love to say that COD: MW2 got killed by it's community but in all reality there really wasn't anything new in the game. Noob tubes, call in's, w/e. The biggest issue was that the removal of dedicated servers both made it impossible to clear out the scrub sorting weapons and attachments, and also removed the idea that you were beholden to someone other than yourself. You had manners on a COD: MW server because you'd just get banned if you waved your dick around enough.

WoW comes to mind too, but it's Blizzard's fault more than anything else. When you do basically everything with people off-server other than raid it kills the quality of play on both ends, both cross server and within. Ultimately when you can just server transfer away you don't care so much about the plight of your own server, and when you're paired with people you'll never see again ninja'ing that piece of gear seems less significant a decision, and actually doing a quality job matters less. I had more than one asshole DPS ninja a tanking item because I called them out on literally AFK + following through the whole instance. Not that it wasn't going to be replaced in 3 levels anyways but sheesh.

If you want to see what happens to a strategy game where outstanding balance issues don't get resolved for months just look at company of heroes. Broken strategies like pioneer spam (IE: Broken in the sense that when done decently you can't beat it) and kangaroo carrier spam have been in the game for ages and it's killing the community.

Borderlands

I joined the forums pre-release to discuss the game. The sheer amount of stupidity and trolling was on 4chan level. Even the one moderator I encountered was a troll.

I figured if THOSE were the people I'd be playing with, HELL NO. Never bought the game. Don't regret it.

Left 4 Dead. It started out good but right after L4D2 came out everything went seriously downhill. The community lost all skill and everyone started acting like assholes.

All I have to say is "barren's chat," and for anyone that's played WoW, they know exactly what I'm talking about.

Never has there been a chat room purposely made for trolling like this one. The amount of trolling that goes on there are legendary.
Did someone say Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker?!

Also, any PC game I play, ever.

Perhaps its just because I'm the anti-thesis of everything the PC gaming community is, but I'm pretty sure I've earned more vote kicks, bans, bad feedback and hate spam than most online.

And its not because I'm a dick either; I get it because I'm too good (or too bad, depending on the game), and I don't bend for any server or clan BS.
I am sorry but I believe I overheard somebody talking about [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]? If I heard correctly I believe that is a hunter weapon.

Sorry I couldn't resist, I still got some WoW left in me :p

OT: The WoW community can be really wonderful if you find the right realm and guild though.
I hear they have some Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker over in Goldshire.

well this is the main reason I became a computer gamer. Games like Day of Defeat and team fortress 2 usually have good communities. Yes, there will be trolls, but you can leave the server if it gets too much or get an admin to kick them. Hell, become an admin. Then of course you can join clans or communities and diverse your library of multiplayer games. Things like ventrillo and team speak help as well.

thats my 2 cents anyway.

TF2, easily. Everyone else has already said why, so I'll go on to another game I jsut started playing that may already be up there.

Global Agenda. Why? high-level characters camping in the noob areas building rocket turrets and taking the kills they need to complete missions. Seriously, it took me nearly 4 hours to complete a mission where I had to kill just one stinking type of enemy, but that area was so over camped (and this was after I left and rejoined the area multiple times, hoping to get into a a better instance) and every single one had turret campers. Shame too, otherwise a pretty fun game, atleast when played with friends. Couldn't imagine playing it solo....good god, the grinding...

Any FPS... they play everything just to increase their K/D. They dont understand what TEAM means (although this is a problem with a lot of MMOs too, simply being near other people doesnt mean you are a team-player. It means you are standing near other players in your team, not the same thing.) and just do absolutely anything to win. Basically they are pathetic, but if you tell them that they all start being douchebags and yell racist, sexist and/or homophobic slurs around as if that doesnt prove your point.

EDIT: Oh and just further proof that the people on FPS' are idiots: I was playing on MW2 about a year ago and some 12 year olds were on, they started yelling at me and said something along the lines of "Stop playing kids games and get a job.". Now, I will explain why that was stupid ranging from most obvious to least obvious.

1)It has an age rating of 18, that game is for people of my age.
2)It was around 7PM, so their assumption that I was playing games instead of working was unfounded.
3)It was a Sunday.

EDIT2: Lets be honest, its this stupid belief that "trolling" is a real thing that is leading to every community of every game being infected and slowly dying. "Trolling" is just an excuse for being an asshole. Its not a personality defect... you are doing it on purpose, right? So you are cool. Yeah, sure(!)

I am supposed to feel bad because YOURE an asshole? Explain that to me? How is the joke on me, when its these people that are being dickheads? I dont understand it, you say "Haha, jokes on you. I was trolling." and I hear "Haha! I am pretending to be an asshole to hide that I am a much bigger asshole.".

(This is just the general you and not anyone in particular... although if you claim to be a "Troll" then obviously you fall into the aforementioned categorie.)

Team Fortress 2, something about the community is off putting, maybe it's the *extreme* love for the game as in they have hours in the 2000's and up played, or maybe the fact that they buy other games JUST to get hats.

Half-Life 2. Oddly, the honorable mention goes to another Valve game:
Left 4 Dead. (I can still play versus but Co-Op with randoms is to be avoided like the plague.)
How does Half Life 2 qualify if it's only a single player game? Are you talking about the Church of Freeman effect? I'll admit, I love HL2. I do think it's one of the top 5 games of the 2000s. I'm very much anticipating Episode 3. And I think just it's plain fun. But you know what? There are plenty of other games I'm anticipating, there are many other franchises I love just as much or better (BioShock comes to mind). So I feel ya on the extreme fanboy-ism of that game. Also I've never tried Left 4 Dead co-op, so thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to give a go a my friends house before I buy the game.
I'm going to have to agree with that. HL2 was amazing when it came out, even after it was delayed. I still enjoy playing it from time to time because the narrative is great. I can also recognize major design flaws and point to things that should've been cut from the final game, but I don't really see a point to criticize. Sure, if one is 14 and shallow or simple enough to put the highest priority on graphics, I guess I can see why one would come down harsh on the engine in 2011.

But I don't really see the stark fanboyism with Valve or Half-Life that I do with Halo, GTAIV, CoD and others mentioned in this thread. Valve has certainly earned the ire of many "old-school" gamers in their development cycle and priorities (where the hell is Episode 3?) and the fact that their games were really hit-or-miss for a while. It's also obvious why they have the respect of so many in the community. I don't see the blind fanboyism rumored to have spread throughout the world. I just see them as a game developer.

I haven't played L4D or L4D2 in about a year - is it really that bad now? I used to play Co-op exclusively because they actually did it right, but I'd always play with at least three other friends over Skype or Vent. Random Co-op games seem like they would be incredibly disorganized and not a lot of fun, especially if no one else cares. Versus was sweet when I tried it. A friend of mine were the only ones who liked that mode for a while, then we got others sucked into it, but I remember it being just as challenging (if not more so) than Co-op. Planning strategies as zombies. Fun shit.

I'd also like to nominate many of the hardcore Valve fanboys.
If you're talking about the ones on this site, then hell yes. I want Portal. I want L4D. I honestly couldn't give a shit about Half Life or, to a lesser extent TF2.

But the fanboys who rave about how HL is like the best shooter and everything? They discourage me from the game, honestly.

Although I have noticed a decline in said ranting/raving recently. So that's good, I guess.

Call Of Duty's community is the worst, Halo's comes in a late second.
I blame XBox Live. The community's of both of them have flooded out of the game and into my school, it's so fucking annoying.

Runescape.

Bad communities is why I usually stay away from all MMO's and, if I do play them, tend to be a lone wolf.

Every single race just has people trying to kill each other to try and get ahead. It's always car damage off and everyone goes mental. This game is a racing simulator, not demolition derby
