Since Chrome isn't here yet I'll start off:
Abandoning hardcore gaming? Since when were companies hardcore or not? Gamers need to learn to stop using media buzzwords, they will be the downfall of our favorite past time by dividing our camp into two separate groups. Hell I remember when hardcore actually meant something. Now anyone who plays Halo, Gears, Killzone, Farcry, etc thinks that they are "hardcore" gamers. Anyone can be a hardcore gamer, but it won't be from playing a specific game. It will come when you fully devote yourself 100% to this glorious form of entertainment.

This. The label war is becoming increasingly retarded, lets stop feeding into it please.
I still haven't had anyone give me a straight answer as to what a "hardcore gamer" is exactly.

I hate both of those words by the way, "hardcore" and "gamer", so even if I do find out exactly what the definition is do not count on me using it.
Ok, the term "hardcore gamer" usually on forums and use of the word, means someone who is good/can play effectively challenging games...beating a game within a week, pwning in online, beating hard difficulties/getting achievements, or play for an excessive amount of time....or there is the second version of the word "hardcore gamer" which is use by the people who think they are the hardest of the hardcore...and that is basically that they are a gamer who plays an excessive amount of shooters or games with grey and brown as it's main colours...

A casual gamer is basically someone who doesn't have that much time to game, or is newer, or just wants to play a nice little easy fun game...a good example of a casual game to me, are the Lego games (Batman, Indiana Jones, and 2/3 Star Wars ones)..they are easy to get into, you can play it in short bursts, and they are fun and accessible to almost everyone...and again, the second version of casual gamer which is used again by those hardest of the hardcore people, is basically defined as anyone who owns a Wii, or plays a game that tries something new/has colour...

Agreed. I was about to concur with the OP (something along the lines of "will it make any difference?"), but the inferred statement that "hardcore gamers" have "no life" was tremendously stupid.
Indeed.

And I'm a few beats away from proclaiming Hardcore gaming is dead, all that remains is Elitism.

Hardcore gaming brought to you by the number 2
For an example, my house-mate's girlfriend likes and plays Call of Duty around 30 mins every few days. You could even say she plays them casually. Is she hardcore or casual? If the game she's playing is hardcore, she's a hardcore gamer right?

I'd say a hardcore gamer is someone who is good enough to make money doing it. A hardcore game is something with a big competitive basis.

I've always defined casual as people who think using a left and right thumbstick, 4 triggers (the other 2 are R/L 1) and 4 whole buttons is hard to learn. And the hardcore gamers are the ones who are avid gamers who go out of their way to complete games or compete with the people who are best at them. Reguardless of if it consumes their life or not, hardcore gamers are the ones that want bigger challenges and cooler looking stuff. While casual gamers don't try to stay ahead of the curve, they also don't play games that suck you in and make you wonder what happens next... and eventually something along the lines of well that ending fucking sucked. Lets face it theres not any good endings in newer games, but the gameplay makes up for stupid/lazy ideas that happen to come out right before the end of a game. Fable 2 has the perfect example of this, decent gameplay and the most retarded final boss ever.

There is the problem of the definition of 'hardcore' gamer.
For myself and many others it means a gamer that does competitions.
Some others define it as someone that spends a large number of hours a week playing games.

I disagree with saying that the second group are hardcore gamers because they aren't necessarily playing multiplayer/competetive games, or the same games, and they may in fact be playing what you'd call casual games.

The fact that the OP almost outright stated that hardcore gamers can't be a sucess in life while they continue to be gamers is insulting. Many hardcore gamers work in the industry and have made a lot of money doing what they love. Hows that for sucessful?

Yeah, because GH3 it's totally not an "hardcore" game; I've seen a lot of casual gamers playing it on expert.

Those are professional gamers, meaning that it's their job (or one of their jobs).

Yes, me and a mate spent 8 hours yesterday casually completing every song in Guitar Hero : Legends of Rock on Hard Co-op. We casually worked out a system of taking it in turns to watch the crowd meter in case we hit the Red to use Star Power, and I very, very casually woke up to the glorious feeling of having pulled a muscle in my left arm.

I then proceeded to go home and casually play Urban Rivals until 3 in the morning and finished off with a casual bout of [Prototype] to unwind before I went to bed.

I enjoy being a casual gamer...

The people who say that they're "hardcore" remind me of the kids in the playground that said "ha I'm better than you" because they had more pokémon cards than you. They seem more immature than the "casual" gamers who just enjoy whatever game they're playing.

How is saying "I'm a hardcore gamer" immature? It means that a person acknowledges the fact that they spend a lot of time, perhaps too much, in front of they television or computer screen, playing video games.

Just like you're a "Hardcore Pokémon-card collector" if you have 4 of each card, and the star-cards for all pokémon. Obviously you care more for it, and is more devoted to your collection, than Timmy that just has 5 cards in total.

You have fun, Timmy has fun, but you just care more.
This is true. There's nothing wrong with people that call themselves hardcore gamers. It's the ones that think hardcore gaming is "better" than casual gaming that are like the pokemon kids.

I don't believe there is a such thing as a hardcore game, the person who plays it makes it hardcore. A good game is just one where you need to practice hours and hours like harcore gamers to be good at it.
I'm inclined to agree with Glefistus on this one. Every game can be played casually, enjoying the experience every now and again, or can be spent in one solid run through, celebrating every victory consequitively. It might take time to get good at, but it doesn't have to be someting that makes you hardcore. Maybe you spend too much time with Rubik's World and Boom Blox, and have completed their challenges. Doesn't make you hardcore, doesn't make you casual.

But, the true hardcore guys? I'd say those are the few that are out there that can do with ease what most of us whish we could do. They lead fun, exciting lives, are loved by many, but in their spare time can beast 100% completion on Insane-Batshit-Fuck-Your-Thumbs Mode without dying in a matter of, depending on the game, anywhere from under an hour to about 6 hours. And these people do it effortlessly, and often in their spare time, when they're off work. They are, in essence, casual gamers.

And these are the people who are deemed hardcore.

So no, companies are not abandoning the hardcore gamer.

Wait, what?

None of those games are "hardcore".

That aside, even if you consider a game "hardcore", it's still up to the gamer. If a person plays a game CASUALLY, then that person is not a HARDCORE gamer.

If you devote yourself to mastering a game, mastering the online-mode, and become very good because you decide to spend a lot of time with the game, then you're a HARDCORE gamer.

If you play games to unwind and have some quick fun, with your sitting usually being between 30 minutes and maybe 2 hours, then you're a CASUAL gamer.

As my preliminary statement, none of those games are "hardcore". How old are you? You have no idea what the OP is talking about, since all of those games are pretty much "victims" of what the OP managed to get across in his one-sentence post.
