Yes they can die, they usually dont though because they drop all agro as soon as they're at about 5% health. If you've lost your follower though, and by lost i mean misplaced, after a couple of days in game time a message will appear saying your follower got bored and went home.

So far though the only follower thats died on me though is the war dog Vigilance, he died as he lived, by jumping infront of my arrows.

he was just trying to help you not loose arrows, though...those things are expensive...

Once they get heavily damaged, the will fall to the ground, and all the attention will be focused on you, but lets say if you run away, while your companion is being eaten by a dragon (R.I.P Lydia, it was an Ancient Dragon...) they will die.

* I apolagise for any spoilers, I will try and minimise these here*

Hi Guys,

once again, I have a question about Skyrim, I just looked at the post on "R.I.P Companions"
On The first Companions quest, where you have to kill a wizard (no names mentioned) I had Lydia with me, we battled our way through the dungeon, and came to the boss, Lydia immediately ran up, ate several Lightning bolts and a small dagger, and fell to her knees, after i had buried my sword in his stomach, she got up, like nothing had happened. people are saying companions can die...can they???

UPDATE...i'm not sure were ive left her (hopefully somewhere were she can get a drink...
When your companion takes a knee it means they can be killed if hit further. But when they go down enemies have a lot less aggro on them, so unless their in a swarm or you run away or an AOE hits them, they tend not to die.

Silly question, but I'm afraid to try it out.

When you command a follower, or in my case, Lydia, to "It's time for us to part ways."
Will she return to my home, or will I lose her forever?

i noticed that, but in oblivion, you could ask the annoying fan..uh, yer, him, to leave you, and he would show up again when you finished your next match, so i'm guessing the same thing happens here...
