Complaining on the Interwebs

Now, I'm about to sound like a real internet newbie here, but what's the deal with people complaining about things that they have to go out of their way in order to have things to complain about. Confused?

Here's a good example: I visit thatguywiththeglasses.com a lot, and one of the series I occasionally watch is the GameHeroes' "Adults Only". I'll admit, it's not the greatest series, but sometimes the games are bad enough to make me watch all the way through. What I can't understand is the people who watch it all the way through (sometimes 10+ minutes) in order to pick apart the video and yell about it in the comments.

Same thing goes for presenters here on the Escapist (particularly Jim Sterling and Yahtzee Croshaw). There are people who watch their videos just so they can yell and scream about how bad the video was. I usually post the same thing to each of their comments: "Why did you watch it if you don't like it?". I have yet to hear a good response to this question (the best being "Because someone has to tell them they suck" and that's saying a fair bit right there).

So, I ask you all: can someone explain to me this? Why are there people with such tiny lives that they have to wade through things they know they don't like in order to affirm their hatred? If you are one of these people, would you mind explaining why you do what you do? Maybe I don't understand "kids today", but back in my day (early 90s) if we didn't like something, we just ignored it (see: hippies and religious nuts). Maybe that's because my generation didn't feel as entitled as the current generation...

Hippies in the early 90s? You sure?

There's nothing wrong with having a good complain. You just complained on the internet about complaing on the internet. I know fucking mind blowing.

If I complain that this thread is meta-complaining, then does that mean I'm meta-meta-complaining?

There will always be entitled people on the internet. Sometimes that's deserved, but the majority of the time it isn't.

It's a way to vent and it's fun. If your ever angry then you want to be able to tell people how bad or terrible something is, it happens all the time even in real life. It's just even easier to do on the internet.

Hell your doing it now. Complaining about people complaining? Yep that sounds like complaining on the interwebs to me.

If you want to complain about something you actually have to now about it to have any legitimate arguments, I actually find it a good thing that people watched the whole thing video before whining about it cause it means they actually dislike it for a good reason. Unlike some who just go "omg lame it suxors" without any reasoning behind it.

So basically either they complain for a good reason or complain for no reason at all, make your choice OP

I read your whole post just so I could say it didn't really make a lot of sense.
People will watch a whole video just to check it didn't get better.
It's called forming a full opinion on a subject, and is why I take my time to listen to music made by bands I've previously detested - one day they might do something good, and me criticising all their work would thus be unfair.

People will complain on the internet because they hope that people will jump on and agree with them. Rarely happens. At best the thread will die fast after the intial burst of responses, quickly getting buried by new arrivals. At worst it becomes a hotly debated and controversial pile of bile that results in both mod action and community frustration.

People like to complain aloud here because they can. It would be nicer to see threads other than those complaining about content or complaining about complainers.

[sub][sub]And now to complain about the amount of "What kind of thread do you hate most" threads popping up within the last several weeks.[/sub][/sub]

You went out of your way to read all those comments and then made a thread to complain about it... well now that just seems silly to me.
It's almost as if complaining is something people like to do.

I had actually written something substantial.
Then I realised how dumb this whole thing was.
That's the story of half of my comments, which end up never being posted.

Redlin sums it up well.

And after all; all many people love to complain. It's a way of venting, and also gives the ever-so-desired feel of community. Whether it's about a gaming feature, new restricting law, bad referee decisions after a match, bad endings... You don't like about something and what's better than sharing that dislike with others. Add Internet, with the anonymity and other basic features, into the mix and the effect multiplies.

edit: 4000th post. Whee.

Stop being so meta. Wait.... by complaining about you being meta about meta-complaining, have I become a meta-meta-meta-complainer? NOOOOO!

Trolling is one thing...
But yeah I also go with the "don't like it = iqnore"
I don't listen to music I like (or comment about it on youtube videos) and I don't watch or go on Manchester Uniteds games or videos.
It's quite easy actually.
