So as we've all already heard over the past few weeks, the NSA spies on American citizens, keeps tabs on them, and tracks various things we do, in real life and over the internet. Some people have been for this practice, others against it, and some just don't care.
One of the things that I've said about such spying, is that a lot of things that people do, completely innocent things, can look incredibly shady and even sinister when looked at without proper context. This idea has made me examine a lot of the things that I do, or have done, in my daily life and realized that from an uninformed outside perspective more than a few of my actions make me look like a serial killer.
Here's some of the stuff that makes me seem like a serial killer:
For one, my internet browsing history is pretty messed up. There's a lot of searches about murder, child murder, child abuse, serial killers, serial killer victims, methods to dispose of bodies, different acids, rates of decomposition of corpses in different climates, etc. Sounds like someone planing something doesn't it?
Another thing is that if you look in my car you'll find multiple knives, duct tape, rope, lighter fluid, and garbage bags. Plenty of tools to kidnap someone, tie them up, kill them, and then dispose of their body.
Here's the thing though, all of this has a very simple and innocent explanation:
My web searches are creepy as hell because I majored in criminal justice in college, and minored in forensics. All of these searches are research for various papers in classes like victimology, forensic psychology, and criminalistics.
As far as the stuff in my car goes, I go hiking a lot, and I like to be prepared for a lot of different scenarios. One of the knives in my car is there in case I get into a car accident, so that I can use that knife to break a window and cut my seat belt to get out. The another knife I have in there is a survival knife, which along with the lighter fluid is used for starting camp fires. The rope and duct tape are there because I have a big car and help my friends move, and because duct tape is just generally useful for a lot of things.
So here's my question to you escapists:
Is there anything that you do in your daily life that could make you look like a potential criminal if your actions were taken out of context? Would any of your innocent actions seem sinister from an outside perspective?
