Completing a game, never having used the weapon you saved 'until you needed it'

Now, i don't know about you, but i'm a big fan of melee because in games, as in life, i worry about supplies. However many ammo boxes drop, i'm never confident that they'll keep dropping. Fists, however, stick around however hard i throw them.

My case in point: Mass effect 2's special weapons. I knew ammo would drop. I knew they were there to be used. I never used them, because i always assumed there'd be a more pressing need later, and until then, biotics would do.

Are you a hoarder like the Mule?

Resident Evil 4... I used the Handgun 90% of the time (Shoot in the head, Kick, Knife to death) untill I realised that even Magnum and Mine Thrower ammo (pretty rare) were taking up a lot of my inventory space.

I ... uploaded an entire game of Mass Effect 2 (Insanity mode of course) to youtube ... without using heavy weapons or medigel.

I'd forgotten all about medigel! I never use that either, no matter how much i have. I suppose i'm equipping myself for an apocalypse after the credits have finished.

The only game I didn't have this problem with was Alan Wake. Mostly because it was so much fun to shoot them not!zombies with the different weapons. Never ever used them batteries though...

Mass Effect 2 was horrible about this. I always felt like I needed to hoard it and until my second play through I never knew when I would need the Cain and was always afraid that something scarier would be around the next corner.

I dont tend to do this. MOslty becuse the one time I did, I found ammo for said weapon right before the end boss's lair, plus at various imes throughout the game.

It's not just that, though.
If you have maximum heavy weapon ammo or medigel, picking up more gives you money instead.

Granted it's not much, but rewarding players at all for not using game mechanics .. is not the best idea.

All the fallout games I hoarded stimpacks like a kleptomaniac, and in the baldurs gate series I horded pretty much all potions. Though to be fair both of those series justify hoarding those things to some degree: most of the time you don't need then but there is always the odd hard fight where you burn through supplies like a madman.

I do this alot. But sometimes it leads to situations like this.

" Alright I've died 5 times on this section..." Pulls out Rocket Launcher " I'LL KILL YOU SONS OF BITCHES!"

I rarely to never use the Magnum in most Resident Evil games. Early on, when it is actually useful, its overkill. Later in the game, you are so well armed that its easy to just say "I bet I can beat this guy with my shotgun...or grenades...I mean, I have ammo for them, and magnum is just so rare..." So you end the game running low on "common" ammo, having pumped it into the bullet sponge enemies while having 24 magnum shots. At least you can blow them into whatever final boss there is, but they usually only die for some specific weapon anyway so its a Pyrrhic victory at best.

A lot of FPS games that let you carry your entire inventory end up like this for me. I typically find one or two weapons that serve in nearly every situation, and the "better" weapons end up collecting dust. Turok 2 is probably the worst offender I can think of, you get so many damn weapons that you'll probably only end up using half of them. Stuff like the nuke: never at all.

I never used the Cain in ME2 until I hit the last boss... even then, I shot it early and didn't end the fight all that quick. That said, I was a sniper. Three shots. Battle over.

I swapped to the Arc Projector. I at least USE that. Pretty sure my sniper rifle hits harder, though...

I agree, I wouldn't use heavy weapons in Mass Effect 2 until i was pretty certain I was fighting the boss of the mission. I also, like other people in the thread, will not use medigel for anything, I'm afraid if I use it I won't have it when I really need it.

Oh also what the hell is with the Cain never starting a mission fully charged? Why would Shepard leave the Normandy with a weapon that didn't have any ammo? I fucking hate that, the Cain is badass. Actually the Cain is one weapon that I will use any time I can just because it is so damn cool. Hell I'll use it on a husk if I just happened to get it fully charged and it's the first enemy I see. Love that gun!
