So I still can't run Malwarebytes and i've got the laptop in safe mode scanning for viruses with McAfee.

Something else happened (I think I caused this), but I can't connect to the internet on the laptop now (it's on a wireless network). The laptop can connect to the network and everything but it can't get on the internet. I think I blocked access to something I didn't realize I was blocking...

Does anyone know why my laptop is running 80 processes at start up? I have no clue. My desktop doesn't run 80 processes at start up and it's had its fair share of viruses.
Just start shutting down SVChost's.
It won't break your computer. If you can't do that, do a system restore. If that won't work re-install your OS after backing up some crucial files. NOTE Do NOT BACKUP ANY EXE's FROM WINDOWS FILES. DO NOT BACK UP ANYTHING IN LOCAL SETTINGS OR TEMP OR WINDOWS.
Have you tried URL's rather than search engines?
I've tried shutting down the SVCHOST processes (atleast the ones I think are the bad ones) and I always end up turning the wrong ones off...which makes my computer shut down (because something crucial was turned off). Frankly, I don't know which ones actually are the bad ones. Apparently, from what i've learned from the the processes library, there is a problem with the dllhost.exe

I really don't want to reinstall anything or do a total reboot. Is there ANY other way I can fix this without doing those two things?

Why is this even happening to my laptop? I don't download or install anything I don't think is safe for the system (things from sites I know are not infested). If anything, the laptop should be clean...it's not even a year old yet (the one we had before this one got it's motherboard fried by a bad AC Adapter). My desktop is a festering pile of viruses and has been for what seems like forever and yet I don't have any problems with it (not at the moment atleast). I don't understand this at all. How did these things get on my laptop in the first place?

I'm having a computer crisis at the moment and I am in need of a lot of help...

So I turned on my laptop today and the first thing I saw when I logged in was that I had a BUFFER OVERFLOW. I had no idea what that was so I ignored it. After that, I checked my task manager and to my surprise...there were over 80 processes running, most of which I have never seen before. svchost.exe is the process that is running over 10 times...and I know that can be very bad because they can be virus processes sometimes.

At that point, I got worried.

So I went into both my virus scanners, McAfee and Malwarebytes, only to find that I apparently can't scan for anything. McAfee will open up, but nothing will appear in the window and I can't click on anything in the menu. Malwarebytes won't even load up either.

Now i'm REALLY worried. I went onto Google to look up a Processes Library, but everytime I search for something and click on the site I wanna go to, it takes me to some weird site called .com, which i'm assuming is a virus site.

I've gotten to the point where I am basically out of options. I can't search for an answer on the internet because I get sent to the virus site, I can't scan for viruses because I can't get into my Virus scanners AND I don't know which processes to stop because I can't get into the Process Library...

PLEASE HELP ME! I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M SUPPOSED TO DO!
Ah looks like you are all virused up. Sounds like you have a few trojans and maybe some spyware. McAfee is terrible do not bother with it at all. Also, why do you have 2 virus scanners going at once? That will kill your machine. The rerouting from google search is a DNS rerouter, you'll have to manually copy and paste urls. I had all the same problems, try getting Avast! and doing a boot scan. Anytime any infected file comes up, just move it to the virus chest so you can remove them safely without destroying your system files. Hope that helps some... oh and by the way the boot scan will take some time depending on how big your hard drive is

Sometimes sites with flash embedded download some vicious stuff. You may have a virus which will go around downloading more of them

Avast was one of the trojans that got quarantined...

...and I don't have two virus scanners running at the same time. The good one (Malwarebytes) won't load at all. I was only scanning with McAfee...

The URL stuff doesn't matter now because I can't get on the internet from my laptop now (not sure how that happened either!)

I would suggest reformatting and a reinstall of the OS. Toss all vital info on a flash drive and scan it before you reload it.

There is a virus disguising itself as Avast. http://www.avast.com/ You want to download that sucker and disable the other two. The wifi might be disabled due to safe mode, but not too sure about that. Download that on the computer you're on now and get it on your laptop somehow. But you're going to have to hard wire it to the internet (ie use an ethernet cable). Don't start killing any processes just yet or you may damage something. If you do need to kill a process make sure you check it 100% before doing anything. Whatever you do, do NOT DO NOT kill the lsass process, it will just screw you over later on.

The internet doesn't work in safe mode or regular mode (I was scanning in safe mode)

Not even plugged it? That is odd... hmm, well my friend I have one last suggestion for you before I recommend wiping it out and starting fresh. Do you have an external enclosure? Find one, get your hard drive out of the laptop and put it in there. Get a different computer, have a good virus scanner ready, and plug that baby into that. Do a complete scan of the drive (try not to delete anything if you can), then eject and plug it back into your laptop. It's just crazy enough to work (note when I do this, I tend to use a Mac to scan for viruses. I would suggest the same, but I think you should be able to do this with Windows too).

I wouldn't worry to much about all the svc hosts you've got running. I've got about 13 on the go atm, and i'm near certain i've had about that since i first turned this thing on 2 years back.

also i have no rundll32 running in my processes. I'm sure that if you have that actually running its a trojan, but don't take my word for it. I remember a while back noticing i had something called rundlll32 and that was a virus, and it was harsh to.

The last thing i always do before i give up the ghost, although its been years since i've had to do this so my memories a bit shakey. Google each individual task, or just one of them, with the exe as well and its should give you a site which has all the info on said process. If its safe keep it, if not you need to kill it. Firstly in safe mode end the process, then run msconfig and look in the startup tab. If its in there untick it. the repeat this for every process you have.

If you have a fake svchost then i'm stumped, they are usually hard core viruses. Also Mcafee will do nothing good for you. Kill it with fire!

Currently have 15 svchosts running, and it's all to do with what I have open, 3 are network, a couple are to do with my browsers and yeah. Generally, it's just system processes.

Virus's can be hidden in the cookies of a website. You don't have to accept to download them. Do you pirate games, I would suggest you choose carefully. There are ways, you want to start deleting hidden files non-crucial, and get some proper anti-virus stuff on your computer fresh. If your lucky that might work. Go to your desktop and download AVG, AVAST and maybe panda trial. Put those on and run them. Have you tried URL's?.
I don't pirate games, but i've downloaded some free games like free mmos (DAMN YOU MAPLE STORY!). I haven't downloaded any to the laptop with the problem though...

Like I said, I can't try URLS because my network connection to my laptop isn't finding my network...

check whatever what you last installed and tell us what it is. THAT WOULD HELP.
You've given us no idea of what caused it.
If anything, it's probably spyware.
The problem would go away if you enter your social security number in the little box that just popped up.
(just kidding if you're getting paranoid)

One, I find it ironic that the guy got banned and ultimately his advice was the most useful and the one you used. That makes me a bit angry.

Two, I don't know how much it cost you, but I know Best Buy is extremely expensive when doing stuff like this. I remember reading their prices while trying to get a new iPod and installing software from a CD (you bring in the CD and your computer) costs $20.

Three, you should've just reinstalled XP. Simple process and you wouldn'tve had to deal with so much hassle.

One, I didn't ban him for his post...be mad at the people who reported him (which I was not one of...I found it shocking that he got banned for that actually...it was weird)

Two, it's a better solution than trying to dive into the Windows folder myself. I'd end up making things worse.

Three, I don't have any way to reinstall XP and, once again, i'm not technically knowledgeable enough to even try to figure these things out. I'm not a computer wizz.

Four, from what I was told, these were pretty nasty bugs and I really was out of options...
