I'm by no means a computer gamer. I've pretty much been using consoles my whole life, so excuse me if I miss a typically obvious thing.

Recently I downloaded steam to play with some of my IRL friends. I decided to get TF2 because it was one of my favorite games. After downloading it will not let me play. Trying to run it just brings up the little "Microsoft error report" window saying "hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." I've tried submitting something to the steam support page but to no avail. Any help is appreciated in advance.

Edit: I went to a site that checks minimum requirements - it says my video card doesn't cut it (Minimum: DirectX 8 compatible video card (NVIDIA GeForce3+ / ATI Radeon 8500+)
You Have: ATI Radeon Xpress Series (0x5954)) although all three features of it are good enough.

If it does it every single time i guess it didn't install correctly, did you try reinstalling the game ? (not steam, just TF2)

Also, i supposed you checked to see that your computer met the minimum requirements for that game right ?

Yes, I checked the requirements and I'm sure (well, as sure as I can be) that I got them all easily

I'll try re-installing it

Edit: wait... how do you uninstall a steam game? /newbfail

You poor thing...no newbie should experience the horror of Steam so soon =(

If you downloaded it straight from steam (not using a disc to install), sometimes connection can 'hic-up' and cause little errors. Try 'deleting local content' and reinstalling. (if you have paid for it, you can't lose it with steam. It knows these things).

I'm afraid things may get frustrating for a while.

Just do it from the uninstall programs option from the control panel or right click the game in your steam library and click 'delete local content'.

Are all your drivers up to date, did you verify the game cahce, defragment the game files, deleted clientregistry.blob yet and redownloaded the game yet?

I never had issues with steam myself, provided i rechecked the above.

Alright... I've tried everything in here, I've gone around the internet and looked all over the place, and I've gotten help from my somewhat tech-savvy brother... all to no avail. :(
