So, I'm playing through Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on my computer, previously I had only played the Xbox version. I get past Taris and get to Dantooine, the game starts lagging like crazy. I look up the problem, I need to add this line of code to the ini file "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1", now I've done this type of procedure before for Fallout 3 (Although I still couldn't get the game itself to work). But, I can't change the ini file, it won't let me.

For whatever reason, I can not change the KotOR file from read-only. My account is an administrator account and it just won't let me change it. I even tried to grant all users "Full Control" to the file, all I got was "Access Denied". I have a serious headache now, thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Some files are locked not by not having rights, but by the owners of the media. Try this:

Start button > All Programs > Accessories > Right-click on Command Prompt > Select Run as administrator > Click Continue.
At the command prompt, input takeown /f filepath
Now input icacls filepath /grant yourusername:f

the file path of course will be the file you are choosing to gain access to.

There are programs out there that make this a lot easier also. I did have one in the past, but can't remember the name to it. All you had to do is right click a file or folder and select take ownership.

Because I suck, I wasn't able to do that with Command Prompt, so I found a program that would let me take ownership. I was able to get ownership of the file, but I still can't unset Read-Only. I'm never going to fix this game...

Bump and another question, anybody know any good PC Support forums I could check out for a quick response? I tried some other gaming forums that I had accounts for, and I got nothing.

I think I had this problem before with the same game, have you tried copying the file to your my documents (or alternatively saving as new), editing the copied file in your documents and then replacing the old file with the new one from your documents. I think it is a problem with the file location.

Well, I did that, and I was able to change the file, but it didn't seem to really fix the problem. I'm going to see if there is a bugfix mod out there or something, if that doesn't work, I'll just play through Dantooine in its crippled state. Thanks for the help, I think I had to move the file around when I messed with Fallout 3 as well, I'll remember that step if I ever encounter as similar problem.

Ok, hope you get it fixed.

Have you turned grass off, I definitely remember having this problem while playing through Kotor again on my laptop. Sorry I cant remember how I fixed it.

I didn't try turning off the grass, but Dantooine mostly works now. Mostly, I'm almost finished with it anyway.

Turned off the grass, fixed everything, too bad I only had about 30 minutes worth of stuff to do on Dantooine left at that point. Thanks!

Great! I think that grass problem happens on Manann too, so you may want to turn it off again once you get there. Glad to have helped and have fun :D
