Anyone with even a small amount of computer knowledge knows what a virus is, and how deadly they can be to your system and personal files/info.

So, does anybody have any stories to share about their experiences with getting a virus, what happened?
And what are your thoughts on viruses and the people that make and deploy them?

I don't know if I've had a virus before, but I had quite a frightening run-in with one once.

I was surfing on some interwaves, and suddenly, a window popped up, with one of those download-bars or something. Then another window popped up that said "if you want your computer to stay safe, don't close this window". I panicked, and turned off the computer, and plugged it out. When I turned it back on, I didn't seem to have any problems.

Edit: It would be helpful if anyone here knows what kind of virus that was, so maybe I'll be able to figure out if I caught it.

I had a mostly okay virus sometime ago. The first hint I had of it was an AVG virus alert popping up saying my computer was infected. However, I use avast! anti-virus, not AVG, which I had recently uninstalled and purged. The virus kept creating these false virus alert popups and wouldn't let me close them down, and wouldn't let me run my own anti-virus.
Luckily by the this point I had switched the wireless internet off, because it them began opening up Internet Explorer, a browser I never use, and trying to connect me to porn.com. Eventually I managed to purge the virus by running in safe mode, installed Malwarebytes and running a full system scan.
There was a few residual problems though, such as being unable to connect to the internet with Chrome or Steam until I had reset the port, but on the whole there was no lasting damage.

I had a virus that completely cut off access to all parts of my computer unless I bought the ironically named "AntiSpyware Soft"(hint: remove the anti). It cut off my web access, wouldn't let me use the task manager(which is how I beat it once),and had the nerve to try and make me PAY for having my computer hacked. It wouldn't even let me access Microsoft Word!

But, on a slightly silly note, it did disguise itself as an adult site and tried to get me to click on it. I'm not sure what that says about the creator of this piece of malware...

I had this very entertaining time where my friend got a virus on my desktop. It was so much fuckin' fun! -/sarcasm-

My friend was downloading something. Most likely music or something and ended up getting a virus on the computer when he ran it. Suddenly the wallpaper changed to something you can draw out of MS Paint and it said "Haha, you're fucked now." Or something like that. I ended up just overwriting the OS because it wouldn't let me do much else. This was on Windows XP ages ago.

I was just off dealing with a trojan that my laptop just got infected with, it's clear now and it was captured and quarentined as soon as it hit my computer, I'm just a little shaken up by the whole thing, it's a brand new laptop and I'd hate for anything bad to happen to it.

Partly why I made the thread, I wanted to hear some similar stories.

My dad has brought one of them tiny, chi-huahua computers with him from work that we borrow. It one day suddenly went bogus and is still stuffed with viruses, my dad hasn't bothered to solve it yet. You can barely log in before you're flooded with virus-warnings and stuff. It's pretty creepy.

Once used Bullguard anti virus, which started deleting my Windows DLL files (the files windows uses to run)

actual viruses have never really bothered me.

I had a nasty one a few months ago. Somebody tried to get my inactive wow account. They must have had some kind of keyloger as I was cut off from my Hotmail and mesenger, google and yahoo email accounts which I need for work. (all have difernt passwords) as well. All the secret answers and passwords changed. After getting my wow account back rather than a fresh install of windows I decided to follow some advice about cleaning my computer. I spent some money on decent anti-virus and got some recomended spyware and malware removers. I eventualy found the virus and exploit kit in my java directory. After removing the virus I rebooted my computer only to find it wasn't working. Couldn't get ino safe mode or boot menu. Something was up with the bios. I don't know what did it, if it was something left by the virus that only hapened when I found and removed it or something I had done though I did not remove any files from windows. Also later I found that the graphics card was burnt out. Ended up having to buy a new computer with money I did not have as I am self employed and need a computer to work. I still can't get a lot of my email's back and still feel pissed off about it. Odviously I am not savy enough to find thoes responsible for the original virus and I could have protected myself better than just using free AVG, but if I ever here anybody in my general area bosting about making virus's or hacking game accounts I will pull there entrails out through there face and staple them to the wall by there eyelids. Thats a fact.

I actually got that exact same virus, and so did my dad. All I did was restart my computer and I haven't seen anything from it for a year.
