I've been following it since it was announced. Until the last few weeks, it has looked like a complete and utter regression in pretty much every facet. Then it started to redeem itself, and then the final round of previews cast yet more doubt, and someone who I find is usually pretty spot-on with this sort of thing says it's almost a complete regression as well.
Would you care to say who? I preordered the game because I've been eager to play the hitman series since Blood Money (my PC at the time wouldn't run it) and since it was only about $40 where I live, I thought it might be a good deal to get the whole series for that price. I'm a little bit worried about the previews, though.
As in, personal doubt. Previews tend to be positive or, at the very worst, neutral if something's pretty shit.

I love Conan O'Brien and I love his Clueless Gamer videos. I was not disappointed with this particular one.

Minecraft was still the best episode, though.

That was quite funny.

I have never watched much of Conan's stuff, but I think I might have to track down the rest of his video gaming stuff.

Only [s/]cunts[/s] people like us would look at this video and whine about misogyny.

I don't recall seeing him have this much fun in past "Clueless gamer" segments. The lack of excessively confusing mechanics and cutscenes to get in the way of shooting people has paid off.

P.S. Thanks

Been looking forward to this game for a while and Conan was pretty damn funny in this one. I think I will also enjoy killing nuns.

There is this really cool thing you can do if you don't like the videos. Don't watch them. I know, I know, but what would you have to complain about? Well don't worry, I am sure you will find something.

Why so much hate for this guy, did he offend anyone?
I found him funny, I laughed along whenever he pointed out how silly the AI was and his reactions were great ^_^

I guess my sense of humor is pretty at the ground-floor :(

I don't think you'll be disappointed. There are playthroughs up online right now that show off the game. Without going into spoilers (but I'll tag it anyway):

- The game has 20 chapters, with most levels having 2 or 3 segments within. Three of those chapters are little more than "playable cutscenes", while others have huge environments to play in (the "Attack of the Saints" mission being a prime example).

- There are lots of callbacks to the installments.

- Bateman doesn't disappoint. His reading of the mission description in "A Personal Contract" is nothing short of goosebump-inducing. The voice work is generally stellar. The only thing I have a problem with is that far too often, people repeat the same lines when they notice you ("Don't I know that guy from somewhere?", "He looks awfully familiar", etc.)

- The final two missions are very difficult, even on Normal.

- There's one fight that is comprised of quicktime events (and it's for a reason).

- Disguises seem to be tweaked - it's not a cakewalk to just get a disguise and walk into a building. Someone's still going to notice you. Instinct seems to be a godsend in the last four missions, and there's one stage where (shy of knocking out everyone) you pretty much need it to stealth past a large group of enemies.

- There are cameos from both Kane and Lynch of the eponymous franchise. Lynch's in particular is hilarious. "Fucking gnome fucker!"

- With the exception of the tutorial mission, most of the levels seem to have multiple ways of completing objectives.

- There's lots of replayability. Aside from Contracts mode, you can replay levels to unlock new disguises, weapons and skills.

- The main storyline is definitively resolved at the end of the game, but there's a setup for either a DLC or a sequel.

Honestly, I think it's going to be regarded as good as Blood Money, if not better. Some of the level setpieces are incredible (especially "Attack of the Saints" - the level design in that one is amazing).

That was so funny it was offensive lol I had never heard of this show, and I must say that, at least this time it was VERY fun. Conan was simply amazing, he played it honestly, like most people who never played games before (or even simply never played a stealth game before), his first instinct was to kill the enemy and shout "WOW! COOL!!!", and that's how beginners react. He failed at pointing anything relevant for the game, such as the stealth assassinations, but I don't care, it's not like his show is a serious review, it's more like advertising-fun lol

Editing: he's totally right about the bar code, I think any Hitman fan has though about that... I mean, if it was really necessary to tattoo a bar code, than do it somewhere else lol

Blood Money was at its best when it wasn't about set-pieces: which it very rarely had anyway. So that's hardly a positive. And levels are now seemingly segregated affairs that you clear and can't return to, not areas that you have to deal with for an entire mission.

True, but they run the entire spectrum. Absolution has sections that are very evocative of BM. For instance, in "Attack of the Saints":

The mission starts with 47 (in a Hawaiian robe just after getting out of the shower) having to make his way through a corridor of debris, before the level opens up into the two-storey main hotel and parking lot. After killing two of the Saints, you head through a door and into the next section (the front lobby, the road and the cornfield), which is twice the size of the previous section and has all manner of places to hide in. Kind of reminds me of BM's "Requiem".

Insofar as their linearity/openness, I like the fact that you don't always have to backtrack through the same level to the same exit (which often eats up time) - you go in, do your mission and get out as quickly as possible.

Like I said, it seems this is way bigger than BM, and it has just as much replayability. The kills are awesome too. You can:

- impale someone through the head with a sword while in full samurai regalia, or pose as a statue
- drop a scaffolding on an assistant in the final mission
- electrocute one of the Saints in a guard shack
- blow up multiple vehicles/people with improvised explosives (especially on Streets of Hope)
- throw a guy out a window down onto the rocky beach below at Diana's safehouse (after he's just got off the phone after learning he doesn't have prostate cancer)
- poison or put sleeping pills in food
- make the "King of Chinatown" OD on tainted product

The negatives I see (and I'm sure some people will be incensed by them) are:

- There's a cutscene boss fight midway through the game using quicktime events. It makes sense in context (47's fighting a guy twice as big as he is), but it looks ridiculous, and it has 47 busting out MMA moves.
- If you're not big on teenagers in video games, Victoria's not going to convince you otherwise. She's an Agency experiment who seems to have the same skills as 47 - she takes out an entire squad of soldiers by herself just before the penultimate mission.
- There seem to be oddities with the way suits show up in cutscenes. Some missions have a transition to a cutscene that have you in a different suit than the one you were last wearing.
- The game will kick your ass on Purist mode. Instinct seems to be a near-requirement for later missions, unless you're willing to spend time drawing people off or subduing people.
- The revelation in the final mission (that the Agency is digging up Diana's coffin because they don't believe she's dead) comes out of left field, and the cutscene with Victoria that ends the game makes little sense. I'm assuming this will be answered further down the road, because I don't get how Diana is suddenly alive after 47 shot her, unless she got to a hospital in time.

Any interest or hope I had for this has dissipated after hearing about PCG's rather damning review - written by Tom Francis no less, a huge Blood Money fan.

What a shame.
Too bad most people who've played the game and read the review have called out the review for either blatantly trolling or straight-up lying. Having seen parts of the game already (walkthroughs have started leaking online), the fans definitely have a point.

For one thing, assassinations are not done in cutscenes - there are specific circumstances that can lead to the victim being kidnapped, but it's very easy to lure someone out and kill them on the spot.

Checkpoints are only on Easy or Normal difficulty. The game apparently kicks your ass on Expert/Purist mode - enemies are greatly buffed up, no Instinct, no checkpoints.

There are something like 40-50 levels total in the game - some missions are extremely short, while others are incredibly expansive.

The game does not encourage you to kill people - the tutorial mission ("A Personal Contract") even stresses that how you proceed through the game is up to you, and you lose points for needlessly killing.

I could go on, but the point is that the only people I've seen (so far) trashing the game are hardcore fanboys still hurt that they changed up the formula slightly. Don't take one man's word for it - you can see the footage online for yourself. It's really, really good.
You really like throwing the word "Fanboy" around a lot, don't you?
