I am not subtle with my thoughts of the Godzilla series here, so when I heard that the upcoming 2014 film was going to have a big human focus, I was pissed. Now, however, I've warmed up to it, despite the last attempt being incredibly stupid and forced. To explain why, let me ask a question: did any of the main characters need to be in the middle of Zilla's attack? Not really. For example, in the first engagement with Zilla in the movie, did Nick need to be there? Well how engaging would it be to just watch the battle from that ops room? He was only there to have a reason to have the camera be in the fight. Every reason to have the characters of the '98 film in the same shot as a monster was a contrived excuse to show the creature as no one made any significant contribution to the scenes with the monster. Fast forward to now and the line of thinking to put main characters in the same scene as Godzilla is to make one or more of them people who will be on the front lines anyway. Yes, the confirmed most main character is a US Marine stationed in Japan.
So what concepts did you not like at first but eventually warmed up to?
