Yeah, I read the thread where everyone mentioned what was overdone. I didn't post in it, but it got me thinking; what did I want to see in games again?

For starters, I'd like to see more speed platforming. Yes I do mean like the Modern levels in Sonic Generations and Daytime levels in Sonic Unleashed.

(I may have also read that thread by that guy who thought it was a great idea to flood the Gaming forum with Sonic polls.)

Why? Some of you would complain that the levels were fairly trial and error. True, but isn't Dark Souls trial and error as well? The difference here is that DS had you learn the enemy tells through trial and error, while Generations and Unleashed had you learn the levels themselves.

Well, why the speed platforming? I thought it was something that just isn't explored as much. I only remember Sega doing this. I can easily think of several ideas that could be pitched around a speed platforming game.

So, what other concepts would you guys like to see revisited?

Happiness. Games with a unique non-brooding protagonist character design instead of a grizzled white man. Also some colorful background and settings, enough with the grey-brown realism. I play games to escape from the real world so I like mine to be fantastical. I saw this in another thread and I can't think of any modern games that attempts something similar.

A few crazy FPS game would be rather nice now and then, yes we got Serious Sam 3 recently but that was actually a mix of MMS and copy pasted old content, come on people push the boat forward not back.

And I concur on happiness, we need to mix things up a little with some happy go lucky adventures.

Homeworld.

Or more specifically, the idea of a "great pilgrimage". There's a lot of stories of the lone hero and his/her 3 friends, but there aren't a lot of games where you are a part of a whole race of people on the move.

An old-school FPS that isn't boring. I like the idea of old-school FPSs, but I've never seen one that actually amounted to more than circle strafing and spamming.

A first-person platformer. So basically Mirror's Edge 2 with better level design and less attempts to crowbar in combat.

Some horror games that don't let me kill everything in my way. Developers don't seem to realise that scariness disappears the second they hand me a weapon. Things you have killed are not frightening.

I 'unno, I don't reckon that ruined Penumbra:Overture.

Having to beat a zombie-dog into submission with a hammer is pretty horrifying, but then again you don't actually *have* to do it.

That sequence in Black Plague in which you're trapped in a room with one of the Tuurngait and have to drop a box on it's head, that's a lot less effective.

Rayman Origins' levels are designed in such a way you can make seamless progression between moving platforms etc if you do everything in fluid motion. There's also a little speedrun award if you choose to play it that way instead of looking for secrets.
So maybe that's a speedrun platformer you want to look into.

Personally I'd like to see something Thief like again. Not cover-based stealth (DXHR; Dishonored) or "social stealth" (AC), but stuff based on shadows and light sources. Tho I guess Mark of the Ninja isn't very far from that formula; too bad playing it lethal is more fun in that one.
Somehow devs always code themselves in a corner with these nonlethal playing methods by putting choking and instant-sleep darts in the very beginning of the game and then not even putting on it a limit like in Thief's harder difficulties.

I wouldn't say it "ruined" Penumbra, but it did make it way less scary.

Once I got a weapon I went from running and hiding from the dogs to actively hunting them down. Just throw a barrel (or similar sized object) at them to knock them over then hammer/pickaxe them every time they try to get up.

I want my fixed health in shooters back.

It's becoming my bane in BF3 to have a tank (a fricking TANK!) drive round the corner all but destroyed, only to pop up again twenty seconds later in rude health. What ever happened to wearing your opponent down?

Add to that complexity, what's up with streamlining everything these days? I want options!

Non-combat based survival horror. Psychological survival horror.

Rhythm games that aren't based on peripherals/being in a band.

A Magic: The Gathering RPG.

Anything Earthbound.

Mass Effect 2 dialogue dynamics in a game that doesn't involve space armies/battle grunts. (I love the games. Just dislike that Shep is a meathead, even though he is MY meathead.)

Pretty indie games that actually go somewhere. (The Path, I'm looking at you.)

Moar mystery games! I feel like mystery games are inherently more awesome than stuff like mystery books or films. Simply because you are (in good ones anyway) actively playing through and uncovering the truth yourself rather than waiting to hit page 129 where it is revealed that the butler did it.

Of course good, well written mystery books are gonna be better than half arsed, badly written wannabe mystery games, that should go without saying but hey this is The Internet so assuming people can read between the lines does go wrong more often than you think :/

Say you have the very best mystery book ever made compared to the best ever mystery game ever made, the game automatically wins because you yourself made the deductions and all that.

[sub]Basically this is all a subtle "Persona 4 is awesome" post if you didn't guess[/sub]

More third person shooters would be nice, I really liked the Dead Space. The steampunk crossed with cyberpunk aesthetic has got to be up there in terms of quality. Hydrolic doors and holographic interfaces and displays for example. Really well designed. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say that the only reason I replay DS2 so much is the quality of the aesthetic.

Oh have you tried MotN with the outfit where you get two distraction items and zero running sound but you lose your sword? It's so awesome! How a ninja isn't trained to be able to kill an unaware enemy from behind with his bare hands is beyond me but whatever.

Smoke bombs are just super useful in that situation. They were my favourite thing anyway but taking them for that outfit brings it up to a whole new level of badassery.

Platforming.
I would love a return to the SNES era of 2D Platformers, or the N64 era of 3D platformers.
I'm sick of shooters dominating the market. I like shooters, but enough is enough.
The answer is simple, I must go back in time, and prevent Doom from ever being made. Then the market would be ruled by Platformers forever!

This.So much this.Modern gaming machines are capable of rendering so many colours and yet games seem to be becoming more and more muted and realistic.I would love to see more games like Trine 2 which is one of the best looking games I've seen this gen

I was wondering why I got quoted in a thread that I hadn't posted in yet. :D

More varied and fantastic settings certainly wouldn't go amiss, it's one of the reasons that I like World of Warcraft so much.

Also agreed with the OP on Sonic-style platformers. I love the sense of speed that Generations gives, and really, it's nowhere near as much trial-and-error as Unleashed was because the level design has been vastly improved.

As for one of my own... JRPGs with physical, tangible World Maps. (Disclaimer: I really haven't played a lot of JRPGs this console generation, mostly just ones that actually made big names for themselves what with being in the Middle of Nowhere, USA.) Sure, Resonance of Fate sort of has a half-World Map thing, but I mean an actual Final Fantasy-style World Map, with tons of secrets that are hidden everywhere and towns that aren't relevant to the plot at all and your little character trucking along like some big, important adventurer.

And not so much "again" as "for once", an open-world RPG set in the Lord of the Rings universe that incorporates all (or most) of Middle-Earth and isn't solely focused on the Fellowship of the Ring (and isn't an MMO). It annoys me that WB shut down that Skyrim total conversion mod.

OH MY GOSH.

Homeworld. That was the first truly mature game with a grown up mature story that I ever experienced, and I was young when it happened.

The feels... the feels at Kharak...the bridge of sighs... the kadeshi...

Man, I'm happy other people on here have experienced it. It seems so niche that many people haven't experienced it. Its true, the great pilgrimage is very moving especially when it was told in a way like it was in Homeworld.

To be honest, I want more space simulations, but with perhaps a bit less foucus on fighting and more about actually managing a ship with a crew fighting against the perils of space travel. Like FTL except a bit more fleshed out and with a bit more emphasis on exploration.

I'd like more games with time travel - either plot or player driven, I think that if it's done well it could lead to some really great stories.
There's one game series in particular that I really loved for the time travel aspect.
