They're all the same nowadays. Lowest common denominator and such.

"Up" didn't have a joke tying it together. Unless it was "What if an old man decided to travel to South America by tying a shit-ton of balloons to his house, and accidentally abducted a boy scout, and together they had a crazy adventure with a talking dog?"
Up is in the running for the saddest piece of entertainment I've ever seen. It's pretty much between that and Grave of the Fireflies.

Also, Brave is gonna be awesome.
You want sad? Try Jacob's Ladder or Flowers for Algernon. Beautiful and tragic <3

i have a bit of a sinking feeling in anticipation for brave, i expect it to be good, but currently i cant think of the joke that will be holding the movie together.

what i mean by this is that every pixar movie has had a joke that held everything together, be it toy stories "what if toys were alive?" to cars' "what if the world were nothing but cars?" or even the incredibles "what if super-heroes had to be ordinary?" from each of the questions framing the movies they take the setting and then create the story out of it. in brave i cant think of what it could be, but it may also be that pixar never revealed the jokes before release and i never noticed it since this is the first time i'm anticipating a pixar movie.

the one thing i did contemplate is maybe the joke is simply "what if the main character was a girl?" but that almost seems weak for a setup
there's no way to say this without sounding like an ass...buut

this has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever read, I mean really? thats your concern about this thing? not..say a disappointing trailer or somthing concerning said by the makers?

ok, so maybe its something of a cliche premise...but seriously, this is PIXAR we are talking about...hell even dream works have been stepping up their game in recent years

I'm looking forward to Brave, I don't see why everyone else has misgivings...ok ok I havnt seen any trailers, but still, I trust PIXAR but also accept that you cant put out somthign with a score of 100%...100% of the time, not saying this moviw will be bad but theases people are good filmakers..not filmaking gods

To be honest, I'm less than enthusiastic about Brave, I expect it to be a good quality film, but it almost seems as if it will be more of a Dreamworks calibre production. I've been really concerned about Pixar for a while now. Toy Story 3 was up to par for Pixar's standards, but Cars 2 fell drastically below expectations, I expected them to at least break even on the reviews with that one.

With the announcement for a much heavier focus on sequels, it can't bode very well. Monsters University seems like a terrible idea, I mean, what are we to gain from a prequel?
I think cars 2 was a case of "fuck it, lets just make this thing" and thats not a bad thing, as for the monsters prequel...monsters inc is my favorite PIXAR movie and I agree

The less Disney has to do with it, the better it probably will be. Seeing how it looks like a Disney fairytale, it doesn't look too good.
why is that a bad thing? why do people make assumptions based on entirely subjective things like choice of settings and themes?

Or maybe it's because this is the first Pixar film in which the main character is a female, and all of us are subconsciously misogynistic.
That's probably it.

We suck :(

Brave is probably the first Pixar movie I'm not even remotely interested in, even less so than Cars. I don't what it is about it, it just doesn't look the slightest bit interesting to me.
The others were comedies, this is not.
Comedies? In the Greek play sense, of having a good ending for most protagonists, maybe. Did you not notice the most heart-wrenching eight minutes in cinematic history at the beginning of Up, followed by having to accept the loss of a loved one, and move on for the future, rather than cling to the past, an extremely hard lesson to stomach?

All the abandonment and seemingly-hopeless struggles of the toys in Toy Story, of having to face your own mortality, to discover that you might have a very limited use to only a few specific people, and beyond that, you might as well be worthless, but that as long as you have others you love, and love you, that even death might be bearable?

Sure, the movies were cute, and yes, they had happy endings, but there are some hard lessons in there. Lessons usually not found in a comedy setting, and while there are always jokes here and there, to try and balance, what they show is often far from comedy.

On the topic of Brave, however, I'm excited. A shift from boy's stories to a female protagonist should provide a different tale than most of what we've seen. I await to see how it all plays out.

actually I'd say its because Dreamworks has actually gotten GOOD in the past few years... and in this case the subject matter is slightly more traditional for PIXAR

I like Antz better than a bugs life...

but that was way back when

when I first hear about Kung Fu panda I thought "oh great..jack blacks a panda..fucking hilarious" however when I watched the thing I found that it was an awesome martial arts movie which was obviously well made with effort and some really beautiful moments

how to train your dragon had none of the annoying things associated with Dream works movies like stupid pop culture references, and it was good

Haven't seen mega mind but apparently that's pretty good too

You too, eh?

I love the way Brave looks and what it appears to be thus far. Actually, I wouldn't say I hate all other Pixar movies. Or that this is the first Pixar film I'm interested in. I love Finding Nemo. But this looks like the most promising Pixar film thus far.

As a fan of RPGs and fantasy fiction, Brave is right up my alley. I'm certainly not a violence nut, but it is refreshing to see a "warrior" theme, come out of Pixar. Being films primarily directed at children(much like My Little Pony and animation in general, sadly), you cannot expect much violence out of them. And luckily, you also can't expect much pointless violence for the sake of violence exploitation flick crud either, luckily. It's a good tradeoff. Then there is, of course, a strong, female protagonist like I've been dying for more of film forever. Oh, and I love Celtic culture, too.

I think they're going to handle this really intelligently. And for the first time ever, I'm super hyped up for a Pixar film. It might actually drag me out to the theater.

To be quite honest, when I first saw the trailer I thought it was a Dreamworks film. I was quite shocked to find out that it was actually a Pixar film. That's not to say it looked bad, though; just that it lacked that iconic Pixar style.

Just not my thing, it seems. I'm more into movies like Antichrist, Jacob's Ladder, Resovoir Dogs, Martyrs--more sort of serious films that involve a lot of thinking. I guess I'm too uptight to enjoy a bit of a fun, kiddy flick :p

wait...what?

why are you bringing oranges into a conversation about apples?

and "kiddy flick" <- imply s lack of quality or emotion...I believe you are quite wrong there, but if animated films aren't your thing then...I don't know what to say

I'm not really comparing them, just saying the latter are more up my tree--like someone would say they prefer country music to rock.

By kiddy I just mean, made primarily for children. It doesn't say anything of the quality.

I can't say, but if they maintain Pixar quality, then they can only go uphill from Cars 2.

The setting, the look, the source material for the story all seem good so for, it's the main protagonist that bugs me independent women in a mans world just seems like a tired story I'm hoping that whole fight for her hand crap ends in the first act and most the movie is her traveling fantasy forests with her horse and bear.

That animation style really bugs me and it's quite popular. I can't explain why, but it's just so... old story book like, you know?

I'm actually looking forward to this one, even if it doesn't wind up being a masterpiece it'll be nice for young girls to have a strong female protagonist to look up to, instead of the regular princesses and damsels and such.
