I have to say this virus sounds cool of course not for anyone who is infected which is not me. Just looking at an article online it blew me away just how wide reaching it is. It also said that it prevented you from going to website were you could download the removal tool or scan tool and that even if you had the file on your computer to remove/scan for it you couldn't beccause it had the name of the virus in it. Like people are changing the name of the software that removes it just so it will work. To the person that said that you could just restore your computer the virus stays in your computer like is almost impossible to remove without the software eve with restore. Yes i think its cool i don't agree with it i mean i would like to go onto adult oriented website without having my computer destroyed or maybe a gaming site.

Linux, I'm feeling even more smug cause I have control over my OS :)
I use Linux as well. I also use Firefox so good luck to that virus.
Yea it just sucks having to reboot each time I want to play a game.
I take quality and protection over gaming. That is what my desktop is for.

I actually just read about that, too. It was quite interesting.

Apple or disgruntled Microsoft employees created this virus

Who should I target?

Oh god. The whole "unknown purpose" part of the virus reminds me of that book, Cell by Stephen King. Creepy man. If I wake up tomorrow and everyone who's computer had the virus is a zombie... well, good luck my friends. Hope you played Left 4 Dead.

Will you people stop saying that Linux is the saviour! It's not, and it has had its fair share of worms and other virii. Most viral programmers go after Windows because it is easier, there is a larger user base, and they don't have the skills to write something decent. 'Confiker' is apparently better than that, but that doesn't mean much.

As I look at my inbox for the latest security vulnerabilities I see at least 4 Ubuntu ones that I haven't read yet (i've got about 150 unread emails from bugtraq there) and I'm tempted to write a short virus for you just to annoy you.

In fact, type the following into a terminal:

Code:
:(){ :|:& };:
And enjoy your fork bomb.

Mac are vulnerable, Linux are vulnerable, even OpenBSD has had vulnerabilities. SO please stop worshipping the OS like it's the saviour of mankind - yes you have more control, yes you can kill a connection with a command, but next time you have adore or a custom kit on your machine, good luck with that.

And firefox too - crash bugs, code execution, a ridiculous "omg self signed certificate" policy - a hundred things wrong with that browser too.

Now, get off my lawn

*goes back to FreeBSD and Lynx*

On topic though, this worm has updated itself before, it's just that everybody has freaked out over April fools day. So far I haven't seen anything and the day is over 10 hours finished for me - it's just another media frenzy to try and sell a few more papers and make a few more ratings.

Let me know when someone finds another kaminsky bug and exploits it before we find out about it.

I'm sure Vista will save me!
Don't bet on it.
Why not? This virus exploited a weakness that was fixed months earlier, so it's only user incompetence not installing windows updates that leads to such a vulnerability.

Obviously, since it works on an old xp weakness, of course Vista save him.
Um, I was being sarcastic. In other words, it was a joke.
Don't take things so seriously.
None the less, it was an incorrect statement, and not exactly sarcastic. More along the lines of generic Microsoft bashing, which, lets be honest, is a bit too easy (and common) of a shot to be particularly funny any more. Unless done well. Which this really wasn't.

No, more likely anyone with an IQ above 40 is smug because they aren't dull enough to get their computers infected. Or buy a Mac.
Lol - man after my own heart ;)

What? Didn't you upgrade your Ion Cannon? The new and improved ones only take a little more than 4 hours to detonate. :p

But it runs on Linux! Do you really want to give the penguins an ion cannon? Actually, that might be pretty cool - they could hold the world to ransom until everyone managed to solve global warming, thus saving their habitat! :D

Well, either Vatican or France I'll say yay. ^_^ I can send you a few spare parts to make your Ion Cannon a bit better. Heck, have them for free. They weren't getting used for anything.

It's not just going to pop up without being provoked to do so... So just don't go clicking random links (i.e. random ones posted on this site...) and if all else fails, just spam your anti-virus software to do a virus search like I do... Wait, can that detect a worm? o_o
It can detect computer worms but it can not detect giant worms sinking cities.
Usul, we have wormsign the likes of which even God has never seen.

Ok my computer is like Frankenstein. I have a macbook pro that is bootcamped to run windows xp and has an external harddrive and about a half dozen other things connected to it, including a microsoft keyboard because the one on the laptop itself decided to stop working aside from occasionally making a noise that sounds like someone has a weedwacker inside the machine (it does this about 2 to 3 times a year, I once called Applecare about it and I swear to God that they told me my motherboard was going to fry soon and they couldnt do anything about it until after it happened. Thankfully they were wrong and my computer is working "fine").

I use Firefox (honestly I would uninstall Internet Explorer to get rid of some annyoing pop ups but im worried that I might actually need IE for something and I have no sure way of getting it back if I do) and have tried lots of anit-virus and similar software but have finally settled on a team of these programs:

-Windows Live One Care: (I love it because it actually tells you when it has stopped a virus so you actually know it is doing something) Basically this one is my main line of defense and its very protective, im happy with it so far. Funny thing is it actually tells you when you install it that it is better than AVG and even offers to unisntall AVG if you have it.

-Malewarebyte's Anti-Malware: Not the most original name but I have found it is good at getting rid of those persistent viruses and trojans and stuff that the other programs have trouble removing.

-Free Window Registry Repair: a nice little simple program that basically fixes registry erros that make my computer slower and does nothing else. Its a specialized program and it is good at what it does, quick scan and it has yet to disappoint.

-Spybot Search & Destroy: Name says it all. Its job is to go after and destroy spyware, firewall holes, keyloggers, etc. It isnt as good as Malware but it doesnt take long to do a quick scan and like the Registry Repair software its light enough so that you can run it in the background and it wont cause too many problems.

Im happy with all of these programs. Im pretty sure my computer is still infected with some minor things but considering the things I do to it, I consider that to be "good condition".

No problems with any virus.

Confiker didn't even touch me, I can run in safemode and all
This virus is not supposed to attack your computer, but track your keystrokes to aquire you credit card information. So you wouldn't know you have it until you start losing money in the bank.
Wrong.

Conficker stops you from running in safe mode.

If you can run in safe mode, you don't have it.
