Oldboy was pretty damn confusing to me. I get that he was locked in the room for 15 years and wanted revenge, but not too much else.

The Tracey Fragments, the whole movie is pretty much centered around just trying to figure out what is going on as it doesn't even try to adhere to the standard layout of a movie. It's all over the place in a jumble of pieces, 'fragments' if you will that finally when put together in the right way, make sense.

It's a wierd movie but it was helped a bit by a strong performance by Ellen Page who has proven that she can do very dark and very gritty serious roles as well as charming comedic roles.

The Room, Im confused as to what the main plot really is, cause there are a bunch of subplots hanging off of it.

Paprika. Good film, but also incredibly confusing. Just watch it, and you'll see what I mean.

WATCHMEN! What the hell?
I saw the movie and though I didn't understand it, it compelled me to by the book. After reading it, I saw the movie again and went, "Oh, okay."

I recently watched the Takeshi Kitano film Takeshi's. I cannot make head nor tail of it.

Basically, the opening has Takeshi Kitano as a wounded Japanese soldier in a bunker being invaded by American troops. This is never mentioned again. The film then cuts to Kitano's life as a director, all the hassle he has to go under and how he reacts to this. It then drops this idea to focus on a blond doppelganger of Kitano who is played by him with dyed hair. He works in a convenience store and auditions for films every once in a while. This is made even more confusing by the fact that pretty much every actor in this film plays 2 roles, making it really hard to keep track of them all.

Basically, said blond doppelganger has a dying Yakuza pop into his store, and fall unconscious in the bathroom with a bag full of guns, a la Falling Down. Blondy sees his chance, and uses the guns to go on a shooting rampage against all the people that have wronged him. The film then goes back and forward so much, visiting old scenes and showing ones that haven't even happened, that it's impossible to understand what's going on. Half of what we're seeing is revealed to be a dream, dead characters come back, only to be killed again, and then return, again.

I doubt I will ever understand that film.
You should try playing his game. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshi_no_Ch%C5%8Dsenj%C5%8D]

I understood Mulholland Drive, but Lost Highway, despite being entertaining, was particularly disjointed. It is the only film where my brain didn't try to make sense of it.

Have seen a couple of confusing movies but the latest confusing movie for me is No Country For Old Men.

Tried analyzing the ending and I think I could understand it a little but still confusing.

Don't read the comic then! The film was a dumbed down and shortened version of the comic. Although I don't agree I found that both the comic and the film where easy to follow.
The only thing dumbed down about the movie was them taking the side stories out. I am getting so sick of people saying this. If you didn't like the movie, then absolutely no other director out there could have done it better. The fact that the movie followed the story so closely was remarkable(besides the ending, which I thought was more appropriate).

OT: Memento. It was hard to follow, but such an original film.
I never mentioned if it was good or bad. It was dumbed down quite abit, However I love the movie quite abit. Although I'll still never get why they decided to switch the ending....

Memento was also a great movie.

Apparently the alternate ending was what the author originally used.

Also, its a much more mature ending and better suited for the tone.

People would have thought that a giant tentacle monster destroying the world would ruin the realistic "what if" aspect

I do agree the original ending would be found to be silly by the general public, but I'd still prefer the original ending

Begotten definitely. Confusing and simply hard to stomach. Although an easy-to-follow allegory to Jesus Christ and the violence of mankind, the confusion mostly stems from the interpretation of that story and how it is presented.

Eraserhead is up there too. I'm not quite sure why people think of it as bullshit- it was quite impressively directed considering the budget and limitations.

The Room is confusing in an absolutely hilarious "wtf, this movie is so awesomely bad" kind of way.

I'm personally intrigued by how much Christopher Nolan's Memento and Inception have been mentioned in these kind of discussions. I love both movies (they easily make my top 50 list) but I'm not sure why they are seen as confusing, personally. I think there is a difference between genuinely confusing and just intricately plotted and layered. Memento's narrative is unusual, certainly, but it's overall plot is easy to follow and after seeing the end it's very easy to understand the character motivations and any other previously confusing aspect. Inception I'm more confused about people's confusion (and I can't express this without sounding like a pompous asshat, but oh well, hooray for first posts establishing pretension).

With Inception (oh, and potential SPOILERS!!!!!!!!) it clearly defines the properties of the dream world when Ariadne (Ellen Page) first enters it. Sure, the plot at the end is quite literally layered but all of it at that point is essentially 3 action sequences stacked on each other. Sure, the deepest layer is somewhat confusing in terms of understanding the mechanics of the ending, but as soon as you realize that at that point the plot relies on understanding of the characters (who are quite well-defined) it isn't that difficult.

2001 is up there for me. Well, just the last 20 or so minutes of it I suppose.

Primer was simply amazing for such a small budget and as a directorial debut. Definitely one of the most genuinely confusing experiences without falling into that "attempting to be confusing out of gratuity" issue that i feel is present in a lot of the movies previously mentioned.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, I suppose.

I was confused as to why Casablanca is loved as dearly as it is. And confused as to why there are so many Saw movies (I understand its for the money, I guess I'm just confused as to why people give it so much money).
