Considering Buying a PS3 Instead of a Next-Gen

I am a Microsoft gamer at heart. I have a substantial gaming PC and an Xbox 360 and I'm content with my library of 200+ games combining the two.

I'm now looking to get a new console, freshen things up a bit, and currently have a preorder on a next-gen at my local retailer. I'm now very much considering simply using that to part-pay for a PS3. Thinking about it, I'll have access to a whole library of new games, a new community to explore, some new exclusives to try, plus I already have the library in the shop waiting for me.

Has anyone else done this, and has it been successful? Also, besides the obvious Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, am I missing out on any great games by not owning a PS3?

I think you may be over-estimating the number of new games you'll have access to.
Yes, the ones you've mentioned are great, and there are others such as Journey, but given the amount of exclusives overall is quite low, I'd personally consider it not worth the price of the whole console.
Sony have mentioned they plan on adding PS3 games as digital downloads on the PS4, so you may be better off buying that instead, provided that you can afford it, and have faith in something unconfirmed even by them.

Well, besides the titles listed, there's also Katamari Forever, LittleBig Planet, and Heavy Rain.

I'll be honest, at this point in the game, buying a PS3 when you've already got an Xbox 360 probably isn't the best use of your cash. If you could find one under $100, then MAYBE, but there aren't really enough exclusive games on either side of the console war to justify purchasing both, in my opinion.

Just wait until next-gen, then go from there.

It were not an organization like Sony and all the garbage they have been guilty of this generation, I would actually say go ahead and do it. As others have mentioned the consoles are pretty cheap and even more so if you buy them used. (and if you do buy a PS3 Please by all means DO buy it used)

It will take the new generation at least a full year after release before you start seeing truly anything worthy of garnering attention and in that time there should be at least one price break on the console price.

Just off the top of my head God of War, Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, Uncharted, Last of Us, Infamous, Perhaps Killzone/Resistance if you are big into shooters and more out of exclusives.. But I think it would take most gamers quite a while to actually work through all that content. (unless you dont have school/job or other obligations and have nothing but time to play) I doubt most gamers would be able to get through all of that in a year whilst still managing new incoming releases as well.

But... It is still Sony and while MS took the "quality" approach towards screwing the industry and spitting in the face of its customers, Sony this past generation is still leaps and bounds ahead of microsoft due to sheer quantity of raining down sphincterocity. So Id say save the money

Personally I have done exactly what you are thinking of, such as sold my xbox and bought a PS3 and honestly there isn't alot of difference. The online is the same, As much as you hear differently it actually is I lag about the same and lose connection to about the same. Also there is the same amount of kids playing it with mics so you really won't notice a change.

The games outside the exclusives play exactly the same but you have the benefit of having blu ray disks so that means you don't have to switch disk in those long ass games looking at you LA noire.

if i was you try get a swap on craiglist or something because gamestop will shaft you on trade in prices and Id say its worth it but its pretty much the same gaming console but with a few different but awesome games.

Some other games to add into that would be the Ratchet and Clank games as they are excellent, the Sly Cooper games along with Sly 4, and some HD collections. Some of the best HD collections are the Ratchet and Clank one, the Jak and Daxter one, the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus one, oh and if you like Kingdom Hearts then the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix is coming out to the US on September 10th, and they'll be releasing the FF X and X-2 HD collection soon. You can also import games as the PS3 is not region coded, and Sony has added many PS2 and PS1 classic titles to the PSN store.
Unfortunately the PS3 isn't as great as the PS2 was, but it's still a good console to have and I enjoy mine greatly. Also, depending on which model you get you could get backwards compatibility with the PS2. The old 60 GB and 20 GB launch PS3s had backwards compatibility with PS2, but those ones are generally more expensive when purchasing.

I suggest buying one used though, and if you are worried about space issues you actually can upgrade your HDD to any size you want because the PS3 uses a Sata II 2.5" HDD as it's storage device, you just have to format it for the PS3 sorta like how you have to format an SD card to be used on the 3DS.

I myself have an old 80 GB PS3 and have been enjoying it immensely over the last couple of years.

If you already have a 360 and that many games there isn't much point. There are only like 200 ps3 exclusives, and I figure you'll like maybe 20 at best. While 20 games is probably worth a system in ordinary circumstances when you have a library of 200+ you're probably better off just getting a next gen system. Especially with the potential for re-releases and cloud gaming for BC.

Do get a ps3 just for The Last of Us alone it is worth it. There are enough exclusives now to keep you using it for a good while, a year at least.

Beyond Two Souls is out this year and Resistance 1, 2 & 3 are good shooters. If you liked DMC (and you should) Heavenly Sword is great and made by the same dev team.

there aren't really enough exclusive games on either side of the console war to justify purchasing both, in my opinion.

If anyone has the cash to spare its worth it this late in the gen, you can scoop up a console cheap and all the big exclusives are really cheap.

You also get a BD player and media extender/streaming box to stick somewhere in house when your done with the games too so you get value for years to come, if you want to use the 360 like that you cannot play BDs and you need to maintain the XBL Gold sub to access streaming services. The PS3 will be a media device with no extra costs until it dies.

I wouldn't do it really, there are a lot of great PS3 games (add Journey, inFamous 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker (if you're a fan of the franchise) and Valkyria Chronicles to your list) but I don't think either console has enough exclusives to be worth buying for those alone.



And it would only be a very short term investment, whereas a next-gen console opens you up to all the best versions of all the future-games for the next 5ish years.

How? If he buys the backwards compatible version he'll have access to 19 years of games. But yes, if he buys the non-backwards version, he'll be stuck with only PS3 games and exclusives.

I'd save the cash. Don't get a PS3, since between your 360 and your PC, you won't really be getting all that much for your money, but don't bother getting a next gen console yet either. Wait a year or two for the libraries to fill out and for the consoles' prices to go down, then buy. Use that cash to get some indie titles and some whiskey or ice cream or whatever.

I just did this very thing, and I am very happy about it. With a new PS3 to play with alongside my 360, I won't need to worry about next gen for quite a while. So I recommend it, yes.

Gamestop isn't that bad, I just got a new PS3 for $36 after trade-ins. Mind you Nintendo first party games tend to keep a lot of their value, so I had that going for me. You just gotta know what to trade in and keep the condition well.

Honestly? If you're not crazy about playing at least 3-4+ of those Sony exclusives, I'd save the money for the PS4. And I'd get the PS4 over XB1 (regardless of my personal bias against MS for their atrocious attitude) because you already have a good gaming PC. Most of the Xbox exclusives eventually make their way to PC (including Titanfall) while Sony's first party stuff tends to stay put. PC + Playstation seems the best combo for accessing the most good games. I know that's what happened for me this gen; the Xbox ended up at a friend's house indefinitely because I can play nearly all of those games on my PC, but the PS3 stayed plugged in for the half dozen or so quality exclusives I couldn't get anywhere else.

It's a strange situation, because right now is the best value you get out of it but since you probably played all cross platform titles you are left with exclusives and not much else.

Then again that is still 200+ games meanwhile the new consoles comparatively will cost absurd amounts, be bugged out their ass and the small selection of new games will mostly be shite followed by a long drought.

The exclusives were pretty good overall, and with the exception of Okami I am really glad I got to play them, but to be honest I only think it was worth it because I sold on all of my Xbox games so it didn't cost me much for the console. If I'd still used my Xbox then I'd only have around half a dozen titles for an entire console and I can't say it'd have been a good investment.

It's mainly used as a blu-ray player at the moment.

I may sell mine on soon, seeing as there aren't really any more games for it that I want. Speaking of which you live in the UK, so if you do plan on buying one and I do stick mine on Ebay, PM me and I will link you to it if you consider getting one second hand.

Although to be honest unless there are some exclusives that you really want, then this late in the cycle it's probably not worth it. It also won't sell for much once the PS4 is out, because the price will drop significantly. GAME have already knocked around £30 off of the trade-in prices since the PS4 was announced.

And no do not go to Gamestop as they will always have the worst deal, not to mention who ever gave them the old console/games got peanuts for them.

We do not have Gamestop in the UK, we have GAME. Although they are somewhat similar with trade-in deals. On their website you can see how much they will give you for them though, which saves a wasted journey.

You are missing out on a lot of great games by not having a PS3.

So the question is: Is getting a PS3 worth it?
Answer: Yes. Most of the more worthwhile exclusives are going for cheap now, or are bundled into Collections which are a bargain in and of themselves. The PSN has a wealth of titles just waiting for you, and if it strikes your fancy, PS+ is a pretty solid deal too.

Question: Is a PS3 worth it when one already owns a 360, and is interested in next-gen?
Answer: Well, maybe. The swathe of exclusives sure is nice, and the aforementioned lowered prices due to age are never a bad thing.

We aren't sure how exactly the PS4 will be doing BC, or how much of the library it will cover. If the next-gen is tickling your fancy enough already, I'd say go with that.

If you think you can deal with not getting into the next-gen until later, then yeah, go get that PS3.

I left the XBOX community around the time of the great RROD purge.

And... yeah, I've never looked back. Well, occasionally, but that was quite rare.

I never got to like the layout of the MS/Xbox controllers. It was always all upside down and wrong to me.

With the PS3, I enjoyed six years until my first generation PS3 croaked due to overheating (will try and re-animate it, though)... and the newer (not newest) generation of the Slim PS3 seems to have fixed plenty of the quirks on the hardware side. Do NOT get a SUPER SLIM, if you can help it at all. There are just tiny little things that will only end up messing up your experience. The Slim feels like something B&O would sell you for 3 grand. The Super Slim looks and feels like some Chinese knock-off. Just too plasticky for dear old me.

Get a Slim one. Put a 500GB or bigger 7200rpm hard drive in it. Open an account, get the PSN classics like Flower and the new nu-classix like Journey. Do get The Last of Us, yes.

The 360 had some minor extra visual fidelity, better bloom, better grass, better overall visual fx than the PS3. But the PS3 games all pretty much came on a single BD-ROM instead of multiple DVDs and, overall, I just preferred the handling, the overall design and the consistency of it all. Oh, and the online multiplayer was also free. Not sure how that will be handled from here, well, the end of this year on out, but, yeah, the PS3 made me a happy gamer. I still play games on PC and wouldn't want to miss that, but for popping in a disc or downloading a game and just picking up the controller to enjoy myself alone or with game-playing company, the PS3 was my number one.
