Surfing, music, videos, email, Facebook, here ;) The main thing is that it would be portable and could do all of the above equally well.
Hold on now..it can't do all the fancy internet stuff on the go unless you have a plan with ATT..don't forget that..it is important.

Depends on what you would use it for, could you elaborate?
Honestly, it would pretty much just be for everyday usage. I.e. Surfing, music, videos, email, Facebook, here ;) The main thing is that it would be portable and could do all of the above equally well.
Alright, can't really give any good advice, since I don't own one myself. But speaking as a bit of an Apple-fanboy, I will say it looks very smexy.

I'm in the UK and have steady access to Wi-fi networks so that's not too much of a problem, failing that there is always 3g.

Apparently the iPad has a huge security flaw [http://gawker.com/5559346/apples-worst-security-breach-114000-ipad-owners-exposed]. Read the section "Breach Details: Who did it, and how". For $500 just to get the thing and $25 a month to use it, that's a lot of money for a lot of risk.

According to the article, that was more at fault with AT&T than apple.

Oh, I see you are in Britain. I guess that doesn't really apply to you then. Hopefully your networks are more secure over there.

Given that, for the price of an ipad, you can find a 13" netbook running windows, I'd say don't bother. All it really is is an underpowered, overprice touch netbook with a crappy OS, no keyboard and an (optional) 3g modem.

I had the money for one but instead bought a mid range gaming laptop for the same price it does everything an i pad does and during a boring class i can play half life 2 that is why i dont understand the logic of wanting one for function i know there sexy but jesus your getting ripped off the Ipod touch is nice though and it fits in your pocket

Has anyone seen someone wear the ipad around their neck? What does that say about the people who are attracted to it?

I already have a PC almost purely for gaming purposes anyway, it's what I mainly use my PC for at the minute, the ipad is more for portability and speed. I'll probably get some form of courier type bag for transporting the thing around, so the whole wearing it around your neck thing (hadn't heard of that before but it sounds...odd) will not be a problem.

Christ that's an expensive present.

Personally, I'd probably grab a netbook before an iPad, but that's just because I like a tactile keyboard. Why not go to an electronics store and check the demo unit to see if you like it?

Get the iPad, it's awesome. Writing from one right now actually :p
Really? I would think the keyboard would be horrible, it's pretty bad on the iTouch.
Nah, it's okay. I did my entire exam on my iPad, no problems ;p
