How would you feel if Obsidian were to use the chance to make an Alpha Protocol sequel? I remember reading that while Sega wasn't too interested in a sequel, Obsidian had the rights. That could mean that in the future, they may be able to make a sequel to it. And considering that Alpha Protocol got me into Obsidian and is still one of my favorite games from the last decade, I'd love to see it. Thoughts?

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Obsidian pitched the game to Nintendo and the Big N says yes? Alpha Protocol 1 & 2 on the Wii U! I'd probably be suffocating from laughter.

Well, they did find Bayonetta 2... as long as Nintendo let them patch up AP1 and gave them a fair amount of time, I'd get a WiiU for that game, no problem.

Well, Sega it's the one with the rights to Alpha Protocol, so I don't think it will happen anytime soon or at all.
But I would love a spiritual successor to it, "Omega Directive" maybe?

I really think the whole spy themed rpg is a great theme and deserve to be expanded upon....

people like spy-shit and most games that tackle that scenario turn it into a straight up shooter. and AP had the best dialogue system in a game ever.

Well the first problem would be that Sega holds the IP hostage, the other much much bigger one is this IP has a cult following and people would actually demand the horrid design is kept intact... so this is probably the worst sequel idea of all time.

If they intend to do a new better version go with a new name, they can still do the exact same idea but neither Sega or the fanboys can piss in their pot.

Personally I would love to see a new alpha protocol. Spy games (and I mean real spy games) are just so few and far between. Im not sure how they would do it though with so many different ending relationships you could have from the previous game. Not only was Mike basicly a traitor by the end of the game the person he escaped with could have been 1 of 5 or 6 people. Especially since you could have completely abandoned Mina. Although it would be fun to have Steven heck as your "support companion" in a future game.

What might work better this time around is having Mike start his own Alpha protocol. Obsidian could have their story but I would like to see them release modding tools to allow the playerbase to design their own missions, safe houses, etc, etc. It'll give the game a lot more replayability

I'm afraid Sega have the rights. In fact apparently an Alpha Protocol sequel is the thing fans request them for the most (including when they were fishing for kickstarter ideas the first time) but it's completely off the table thanks to Sega.

I absolutely adore Alpha Protocol and I'd love a sequel. Other people would say things like 'in a sequel they'd have the chance to make it right' or 'at least it wouldn't be so buggy', but it's missing the point that Alpha Protocol is already one of the best games ever made. Sure it would be nice if it were less buggy or had more balanced combat, but what it offers in terms of story and depth and flexibility is still incredible enough. I've played through the game many times, but when I was watching a LP I was still seeing things I had no idea that you could do. The conversation you have with the man you meet up with in the cafe is still one of my favourite conversations in all of gaming.

Depending what you do in the game, by the end only 5 of the 28 named NPCs may be dead, or 22 out of the 28 named NPCs might be dead :p I think it would be impossible for them to even try to take player choice into account. Either they need to break off the story in a way where past continuity doesn't matter (like Thorton 10 years later just after a tragic event destroyed everything that he might have had in his life, or a new character altogether) or they just need to choose a canon and run with that.

Modding support would be the one thing I'd love to see them do in a sequel. It doesn't even have to be as fancy as tools to build your own stuff, just give a people a way to do it if they're dedicated enough.

Really? Man, that sucks. I imagine it'd cost too much to buy the rights back for it to be possible for a kickstarter.

Yeah it sucks. This is what Obsidian had to say about it:
?I?ve tried to let people know that Kickstarter isn?t the place for funding someone else?s franchise,? Avellone said, ?Sega owns Alpha Protocol, for example, Dungeons and Dragons is Hasbro. That?s a different kettle of fish.?

?We?d love to do sequels to these games that we?ve worked on, but that?s often not up to us, and it?s not something we could do through Kickstarter, really, or I couldn?t see how they might be done.?
http://www.vg247.com/2012/09/21/alpha_protocol_2_obsidian_kickstarter_not_up_to_us/

Avellone: [laughs] Sounds good. We have a lot of ideas for a second one, but again, Sega just wasn?t down with it. Oh, well. We?ll move on to other projects and have fun.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/04/04/obsidians-avellone-on-torment-kotor-2-alpha-protocol/#more-148240

It seems silly, because surely the IP isn't worth anything to Sega now and it's only going to be worth less as time goes on. I can't see anyone making AP2 outside of kickstarter so it's not like it's worth anything to them.

The money might be an issue even if they had the IP though. 3D with real combat is so much harder than 2D isometric with RPG combat. I imagine even if they could get the IP they'd probably need to change a lot of things to make it work. In that Rock Paper Shotgun interview, Chris Avellone was talking about wondering if the game could've worked as an almost entirely dialogue focused thing ala The Walking Dead.

I guess Dreamfall Chronicles is 3D and using kickstarter money so it might not be impossible.

I'd be very interested in playing Alpha Protocol 2.

I actually enjoyed the first game even with it's short comings when it came to bugs.

I have a question for you guys, maybe you can help me.
Why the hell was this game included in xbox gold game deals when I can't even buy the freaking game in the live marketplace? I want to play it again dammit.

ps. i would fully support another Alpha Protocol.

Nah nah nah, that's not going to happen. Sega said no to that since they wouldn't get the money they want from it.
But I hear there could be a Spy RPG made by Obsidian called Beta Prerogative where you play as international spy Mikhail Thornton.
That would be cool.

It would help out more than being on the Xbox One. Ba-zinga!

OT: I would support them making a new spy themed RPG completely seperate from AP but with a whole new cast, story, and more importantly title. The idea of a spiritual successor could actually end up better than the first since things are easier the second time around. Obsidian would hold the rights to the new IP and being supported by fans would give them more time to develop. Plus, Sega might realize that AP didn't sell well because it wasn't polished not because "people aren't interested in spy RPGs".

I have quite a few favorite parts, but I think my favorite part is:

Dear Steven, please shut the fuck up.

A spiritual successor would give them more freedom to shake things up and change them around if it's needed too.

I agree and like the idea you mentioned earlier about it being mostly dialogue focused. Even the walking dead has a type of combat suited enough for a spy RPG. I would prefer the successor actually have less combat and more dialogue. I would prefer it be stealth based like the original Splinter Cell games if they were to include missions. If they felt the need to implement a leveling system I think focusing on things like persuasion (lying), hacking, charm (flattery), intimidation, etc. If combat is to be included I would like to see all guns just encompassed by a marksman skill and melee (knives, martial arts) be a single skill as well instead of Assault Rifle, pistol, shotgun, martial arts, etc. all as separate skills as that just seems like filler skills. I would like them to focus on the dialogue system that they did so well and tell a good story and not worry about having your guy be rambo the spy, but a spy instead. The boss fights were a problem anyway. I think it would be better to lean more on stealth and dialogue.
