The only difference I can see is that consoles are just plug and play.

PC's are made to be an information hub for everything you do +gaming.
This also keeps gamers on the same technological level, and it means you can focus on skill instead of "I'm losing because my computer doesn't have dual 8800 GT's, and I only get 30 fps"

I use consoles because I can't afford a gaming PC. Well, console. I only have a 360 (it doesn't actually belong to me to be honest, I'm just the only one that plays it). If I could afford a PC that could play games more advance than Pong, I would get it in a heartbeat. But even if I could I'd still play console games.

My ultimate response against consoles is backwards compatability.

So you can play your Xbox games on your 360? Well, I can play a game from 1993, and even before that, on my computer. Some may reply, "Virtual Console!" I don't have to pay for the game again to use it on my new computer. Once you get a PC, you get the most extensive gaming library in the WORLD opened to you. It's had the longest run as a console.

30 FPS is more than playable, and it's the same as consoles get. Also, if you're that interested in FPS, turn the graphics settings down.

I don't think you can really compare cost of hardware of a PC to a console. With a console you can ONLY play games, or watch a movie nowadays, or maybe surf the web a bit (I don't know). This costs you about 200-500 Euro here. If you buy a PC which can handle the same games at the same quality settings you'd have to pay much more, well above thre to four times the console price. But with that you get a device which allows you to surf the web, play games, write letters, do calculations, compose music, write code, ...

My point is that a console is merely a toy (not pejorative), while a PC is a universal tool AND a toy. So I think a PC is actually much cheaper in relation to possible applications if you don't use it to only play games.
This is a good point but I still think it's wrong. Yes a PC is a universal tool and a toy and consoles are only toys. But if PCs are universal tools (which they are) then why should they need upgrading every couple of years? Unless something has broken they still have the same functions. Word still works, photoshop's ticking along. People who are "mainstream" PC users understand this and won't buy a new PC for half a decade or more. If you are upgrading more than this you're either a tech type who likes nice things or a gamer who wants to run the latest stuff or both.
So your argument doesn't work from a gaming perspective. PC gamers still have to upgrade if what they really truly value is GAMING on their PC.
Summation because this was very roundabout: PCs stay universal tools for a long time. If you're upgrading faster than consoles upgrade the chances are you don't just want it as a universal tool.

That's easy!

When I'm alone and just wanna relax, browse the web while listening to music and maybe play a game or two, that's my computers domain!

When friends come over, I break out the Wii for some pointless easy fun!

There's probably more to it than that but it's the way I see it. My computer is definently the dominant gaming system here, but with friends or even when I'm just too damn lazy or tired to boot up a computer, the Wii works great. I don't own any other consoles, unless my old Sega Genesis still counts!

Interesting discussion you have going on here, normaly people start flame wars because of this type of thread, but i'm glad that this site isn't full of idiots who have no idea what their talking about. Anyway, I started playing games on the NES, because I never had a PC until I was about ten years old and ever since I got one i've always prefered gaming on it. I find that fps's are much better on pc as the mouse is alot more precise than an analogue stick, don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that I don't enjoy playing games on a console, on the contrary, I love the Wii, it's great for a night in with some friends and a beer or ten but I can't help but think that pc's are the way forward. Kohlrab has good point in that pc's are a universal tool, to be honest, alot of my life revolves around my pc as I use it to listen to music, watch movies, do college assignments, etc...
