How much do contact lenses affect it? The optician told me today that I have dry eye and should cut down on their use, but I hadn't actually noticed: I'm suffering from few symptoms of it.

EDIT: Would chlorine from swimming pool water have any effect?

If you don't have a problem with it, then you should do as you feel like. I didn't manage to use contacts for more than a month before my eyes itched and got bloodshot, and some nasty headaches to top it off with. I'd say that you should use them as much as you want, as long as it feels ok.

Dry eye basically means you don't produce enough tears, so theoretically you shouldn't be able to go a full day comfortably with them in. Chlorine in a swimming pool messes with it, so I wear goggles when I swim (makes you look kinda dumb, but hey, people soon shut up when you ask them if they have the courage to poke themselves in the eyes each day)

I rarely wear them for a full day. Do you mean chlorine causes dry eyes? I have some goggles, but they aren't very comfortable, so I could wear them.

You should be fine if you're not wearing them for a full day I'd have thought, but I'm no optician!
Well chlorine makes your contact lenses feel all dried out, and often they fall out! Also it stings like a ***** bee...
Worth investing in goggles if you plan on swimming much, or have to (damn you schools, damn you)...

I used to wear contacts every day and all day, and eventually I started getting irritated eyes. If you have an old pair of glasses, wear them on weekends or days when you aren't doing anything. It helped me a lot.
Chlorine may not necessarily dry your eyes, but it will certainly add to irritation, goggles may be a good plan if you swim frequently.
