Controller Set Ups

Right, after being called "weird" by almost every single one of my mates in every single multiplayer session we have, I thought I'd see if anyone else uses this controller set up :

Left stick : move forward/back + turn left/right
Right stick : look up/down + strafe left/right

The reason I use this control style goes all the way back to Goldeneye, the first ever FPS that I really got into (before that it was all Mario Kart). There was a controller set up on it called "Kissy" (I think) which used the right shoulder button to bring up the crosshairs, and the A button to fire. For some reason I found this preferable to using the z-trigger under the control to fire, and so learnt to play using this stick layout.

So I wanted to know, does anyone else use this?

And also, a final question, why do all games manufacturers not build into every game the option of having different control layouts (or even completely customising your controls)? I have actually NOT bought (or NOT played once bought) very good games because they stuck with a traditional controller layout and therefore I would blunder around the levels unable to aim accurately.

I don't know how hard it is to build in this kind of feature to every game (and its mainly FPS games that require it, as there has never been much past variation in control styles for, say, football games) but even if it was tricky, I am sure each games company has at some point put multiple control styles into a game from each generation, so surely all the main backwork for developing it is done and all they need to do is modify it to work with each game?

In Halo, I believe it's called 'Legacy', or something like that. Its an old controller set-up, which I believe was created around the time of GoldenEye (not sure). Anyway, it's in some games, and no, I don't use that set-up; I use default, with an inverted y-axis.

To answer your last question, I'm pretty sure that in The Orange Box, there is an option to completely map out your button layout. Though, this may just be something Valve left in, after porting the PC version onto consoles. I haven't encountered any other console FPS game which allows complete button mapping.

I actually don't think console FPSs need complete button mapping, as most of them use the same layout in the first place. 'Spose it's a matter of preference, really.

Hope this helped.

I've heard of your layout and it weirds the hell out of me whenever I try it. The only special layout I can lay claim to is Boxer in Halo. I just feel that fast melees are more useful than fast grenades so I sacrifice a small bit of accuracy on my grenade chucks for better beatdowns and reaction times.

I know about the Legacy control set up on Halo (as its pretty much the first thing I check on every FPS that I play, is if I can change the control style).

On Goldeneye, the joystick was used for moving forward/backward, and turning. Then the C-buttons were used for looking up/down and strafing. Its this layout that has (for me) translated across to modern controllers (with the right joystick replacing the c-buttons in my mind).

It is a weird set up, and when you think about it in terms of PC gaming because on a PC I am perfectly happy using WASD for my movement and the mouse for looking about. I don't know, I blame Nintendo and Goldeneye for it, but it has meant that I seem to be quite a lot quicker and more accurate with the sniper rifle on Halo than most of mates (although that could just be them being rubbish ha ha).

uhhh? Goldeneye had that?
Left hand: Turns (left and right), moves forward and back
Right had strafes.

Thats the same as he described.

However the only way to properly control and FPS is with a mouse. ;) I physically CANNOT play console FPS games as i can't get the controls right. Don't even get me STARTED on inverted controls!

I use the default "Halo" set up, but I use a few tweaks that seriously piss off my friends when they grab my controller. I use inverted Y-axis (probably due to the Hoth level in Shadows of the Empire way back when) and super high stick sensitivity (partly to avoid Resident Evil slow turn around speed, but mostly so I don't have to move my thumbs that much). It's not that different from a normal setup, but my friends refuse to use my setup at all.

I feel your pain I use southpaw myself and usually run into the problem of having important buttons mapped to the right side of the controller making it very difficult if not out right impossible to perform certain actions while moving with the right stick. The Orange Box as far as I know only supports southpaw as an alternate stick layout, the button mapping on the console works but do NOT EVER attempt to map anything to the dpad on the 360 version you will break your ability to switch weapons. I really hope they patched that because I almost smashed the game disc when I figured that out, if it had not been a rental I may have found a hammer and just smashed the game disc I was that furious. I promptly went out and bought the PC version.

I think it's just laziness on the part of the teams making these games and lack of respect for players as human beings. I don't think I have ever encountered a PC game that hasn't allowed me to change the key mapping to just about anything I feel like. I bought a programmable controller for ps2/ps3 its called a 3 in 1 run N' drive by thrustmaster its not perfect but it might help you for some games.
