A 2ds is going to be a great jumping in point for me until holidays roll around and I can try for a 3dsXL. Sounds silly, I sure, but the only reason I want a 3DSXL is the screen size.
Yes, I think the XL is worth the extra $70, for the huge screens, and the 3D effect the 2DS lacks. I personally enjoy the 3D effect, and I find it increases immersion tremendously in games that utilize it correctly. But it seems most people don't care for it, so to each their own.

All the good games have been coming out only for it for the past few years.
If you enjoy good videogames, get one.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars was made by Julian Gollop and is only available on 3DS. I can think of no better reason to buy the device than that.

Yeah, bigger is better as far as I go, but impatience is getting the better of me, plus my S.O. will have pokemon X tomorrow. 'm getting Y. Squee!
I can't comment on the 3d. I haven't tried it at all, though I prolly could in gamestop, or something. 3d or not, though, I will get a 3dsxl when I can adfford it. there's way too many games that I think are worth getting to put off a nintendo handheld anymore.

I think we can just say "Fire Emblem Awakening" and leave it at that, but there are a lot of really good games for it, plus the 2DS which is a hell of a lot cheaper and doesn't have the 3D gimmick. Really, the only thing I can think to complain about is that Super Metroid isn't on the e-store for it.

Not a silly reason at all; the reason I invested in one is because the DSLite screen size started contributing to my migraines: the 3DS XL was both a good upgrade for existing DS games, and makes playing Pokemon X/Y a delight. And if you buy both versions, your 2DS is now a convenient and inexpensive trade slave.

On a slightly different note: can you play 3DS titles (and I am particularly thinking of Pokemon X and Y) on 2DS handhelds? I am lusting after Pokemon, but I also need to be convinced whether its worth buying a whole new handheld, seeiong as I only got my DS a year ago and have relatively few titles for it.

If anyone knows the answer, I'd be most grateful.

Yes. the 2DS is just a cost-cutting redesign. No features that use 3D are usable though.

After playing the Vita, the 3DS feels like a tiny laptop made for a child. That being said, if there are enough games you are interested in then you should buy it. Make sure to include 999 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors on that list. It's the prequel to VLR and is infinitely better.

Yeah, okay I'll just tell you what to do. Oh wait, no, that's your decision. Here I'll make it easier.

1. Do you have A 3DS? Yes/no.
2. Do you have disposable income? Yes/no.
3. Do you like the 3DS and the games you see for it? Yes/no.

If your answers are no, yes, yes, then ding ding ding! Go buy a 3ds.

The original 3DS sure, but there's nothing tiny about the 3DS XL. The Vita's screen is 5", the 3DS XL's top screen is 4.88", pretty close. I will admit the 3DS XL's screens can't match the pixel density and vibrancy of the Vita's OLED one. Then again the OLED can't display stereoscopic 3D.

Yes. The 2DS is a 3DS, except it can't display stereoscopic 3D.

Personally I think Nintendo naming the new variant model "2DS" was not a good idea. It leads to consumer confusion as evidenced by your question. Naming it "3DS Flat" or some such would have been better.

Keeping in mind that I own a Vita that I never play because I'm not really a mobile gamer type and also it's kinda bulky and can't be carried in my pockets.

The 3DS is on sale and the price is reasonable.
Sorry, I know this doesn't contribute to the conversation but where is it on sale? I've been strongly considering getting 3DS recently but would very much like to spend as little money as possible, considering I'm unemployed at the moment
Unless the price cut counts as a sale, there isn't any.

The only cheaper 3DS device I can think of is the 2DS which comes at the price of $130.00

To be fair, I didn't say any members of the 3DS family were tiny. I said the 3DS (I should have said 3DS XL since that's what I own) feels like a tiny laptop.

Sell me on the games. The N64 remakes do appeal and I haven't played a Pokemon game since Fire Red.

I already have Virtue's Last Reward on the Vita.

The problem with the N64 remakes is the price never drops.

Does the 3DS have slots for GBA or GBC games?

Is DOA Dimensions worth money?
Do you have a DS? Because adding to all these good 3DS-games people have mentioned you get the excellent library of DS you can play on the 3DS.

Fire Emblem. Pokemon. Done.

I might have actually left it at that if I thought I could get away with it without the mods getting mad at me, but really those are the only two reasons you need. Fire Emblem Awakening is one of my favorite games ever of all time and Pokemon gen 6 is now my favorite gen even though all my nostalgia is screaming at me because it wants to say 3. I just love everything they have done in gen 6, it is really great. Those games have given my hours upon hours of entertainment and are so worth the consoles cost.

The 3ds has a lot going for it right now.

If you love JRPG games it is pure joy. It has a better JRPG catalog than the PS3 or 360.

If you don't like JRPG games, there is still mario 3d world, New super mario bros 2, Ocarina of time 3d, Link between worlds and Mario Kart.

If super smash bros is anything as good as the previous ones it is worth it alone.

Pokemon X and Y are great.

Cave story 3d is also pretty neat. The new Phoenix Wright game looks promising.

Monster hunter is pretty cool and 4 is going to be coming out for it.

I've heard Professor Layton is good.

Not only that, but you have the entire DS catalog. The DS had some really great games and being able to play them is a really great bonus. Thanks to backwards compatibility, there are tons and tons of games for it. There is a little something for everyone in the catalog and so when it comes to games you won't be disappointed.

I've been happy with mine so far and I think it is a really good choice for a handheld. The XL has a nice battery life as well as the 2ds.
