Convince me to buy Skyrim instead of something else.

Skyrim is good. Very good. Great, even. But keep in mind that it has a number of problems only overcome by its sheer size and variety. It is a jack of all trades and not really a master of anything. However, this doesn't mean that anything presented is downright bad. I cannot think of many areas where things are bad, except for the animations and scripted sequences. Even the writing and main quest is good this time around.

What would I recommend? Skyrim. It has more bang for your buck and will deliver hundreds of hours of entertainment if it digs its claws into you.
Ya know I hear that alot about Skyrim, and how it has bugs and is slow and broken...Bethesda left some bugs in for people to exploit to have fun, but ive never seen any thing gamebreaking. I bought it at launch and even on my old white 360 it runs smooth as glass. Compare that with Fallout: New Vegas(which Bethesda produced but they left Obsidian to do all the work)which was jarring as hell and would take forever to load before Bethesda made a patch. Is Skyrim perfect no, but as close as one gets :)

OT: If your like me, an open world action/rpg fan that buys only a few of the best games a year and tries to squeeze all of the gameplay out of it, then Skyrim is your answer.

Dragons
Civil War
Ancient Dwarven ruins
hordes of powerful undead warriors and demon sorcerers
The ability to mix and match any race to play almost any class and even mix up the classes.
Did I mention Dragons? :)

I'm afraid I can't do that dave, go look up King of Fighters XIII or Dark Souls...
Do I know you? XD

OT: Dark souls, YES! Not Skyrim, unless you like to explore.

I've noticed that Skyrim has been receiving the "you must buy or die" stamp by all of those who have played it; and while I am heavily considering it, I've been considering other, cheaper games such as Psychonauts or Just Cause 2 instead.

My question is (with only $60), should I spend my rarely acquired money on Skyrim, or should I spend it on something like Psychonauts (which Yahtzee punished me for not buying)?

Psychonauts is a great game, good humor and pacing.

Just Cause 2 will make you go insane trying to get 100% completion yet you cant find that one damn exploding barrel that you need to demo on one random island.

Skyrim though? let me say this:

Current "main" Character has a good 60+ hours since I got it a week after launch.

I have made roughly 40 different characters just to test different play styles, of those I kept about 30 to play with.

I am constantly finding more and more side quests to do, and I havent even got to the main quest yet.

Skyrim is a good game, but if you decide to get it, take care to play it in small amounts, not like:

Aw man, that was funny as hell.

Jesus Christ buy psychonauts. Possibly one of the best games ever made. Leave Skyrim alone its over-rated babby's first rpg nonsense.

Also get Serious Sam 3 aswell. Well worth the money.

You can kill dragons by SHOUTING at them. What more do you need?
Well, you can have it backwards on Dungeon Keeper 1. You can posses a dragon to shout at enemies with the Word of Power and that was a game from 15 years ago

I hate threads that say "convince me to do something"

How about i go play Skyrim and you make up your own damn mind!
Sorry about misquoting you earlier, here's my actual response:

Did you just spend time posting on my thread to tell me how much of a waste of time my thread was?
I'm going to spend the 20 seconds in between my 150th hour of Skyrim and going to eat dinner to tell you that

1. your thread is a waste of time.
2. People who tell you skyrim sucks are trolling.
3. make up your own damned mind.
Or maybe there are people out there who actually dislike Skyrim.

O.T:As much as I disagree with number two of the quoted person's list of things to tell you, I agree with number three. If you want it, get it. If you don't, don't. Pick one.

Here's an idea, spend a couple of dollars at your local video store and hire the games you are thinking about buying. If you like them enough to add them permanently to your collection, then great. Some games may only be worth hiring out because you get all you need from them in the time you've got it.

Personally tho, I enjoy Skyrim a lot. Big fan. And I'm not sure if I'm seeing all these bugs and scripting issues others are talking about. I'm going to get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of it.

If money is the issue then I suggest waiting for Skyrim. Skyrim is a good game and if you are into the genre I do highly suggest getting it however the price will fall in time as with the current trend likely pretty fast. Waiting for a GOTY edition may be the best option for you and give you plenty of time to save up for it.

I also sympathize with your money issue if your still underage I can recall how that feels and if you are a adult for any reason I can relate I have has rough times too. Due to this if you don't mind the PC version of Psychonauts I have a 50% off coupon on Steam that I will give to you. If you want this feel free to tell me.
Yeah, I'm 15, and I don't have that much regular income. As for the generous offer, is that a code? and if so, would I have to redeem as soon as I put it in?

I didn't say that there weren't people out there that don't like Skyrim. I said that objectively Skyrim is a great, if not the best, example of a game of its type. So to say 'it sucks' is just false and is likely posted to elicit a response.

Subjectively, Skyrim is also awesome. Didn't play Psychonauts, but its probably not as good as Skyrim.

If you're considering buying it for PS3, for the love of all that's holy get something else.

Now don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the game. However, it's got a horrible bug on the PS3 that keeps freezing the game up about halfway through the game, simply because it doesn't manage memory properly. So far, the only fix is to start the game again and try to play it less before beating it, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a massive world.

I'd definitely get it for any other system, as the parts I got to play of it were pretty awesome. However, until they fix the issue for the PS3, don't waste your money on that platform.

three things;
1)When people say something sucks, they usually just mean that to them it sucks. Also, when people dislike or like things, they tend to not look at them objectively anyway, so objective quality is a moot point for the sentence "X thing sucks/is good" anyway.

2) See the second bolded set of words. Yeah, that sentence needs them.

3)That last sentence of your's is rather pointless, as it's comparing two things which are completely different, one of which you haven't experienced(Psychonauts), and the other of which you are most likely favourably biased towards(Skyrim).

If you have played Oblivion you have played Skyrim. It is an improvement on Oblivion, if you like Oblivion buy Skyrim, if you have played Oblivion and did not like it don't think Skyrim will change that. If you have never played either game, its worth a shot, its a very good game.

Yes, subjectively would imply that it is awesome 'to me'

You missed my point again. Skyrim is a good game, regardless of if you dislike playing it. You won't find anyone that will argue against the fact that a lot of effort and money went into making a pretty nice looking AAA title. Also, aside from a few troublesome bugs that will no doubt be ironed out in future mods or DLC, the game is pretty technically proficient for one of such scope.

That said, its a very specific type of gameplay and while its definitely not 'niche', it obviously isn't for everyone. If you like the ElderScrolls genre/subtype, however, then you WILL like this game.

Skyrim is meh. Slow, bad UI, samey quests/dungeons/towns/characters. Ive stopped playing after about 16 hours
So basically you say you haven't seen 1/100th part of the game, but still pass judgement about all of it?

How odd...
I can see I don't like a book after a chapter or four, and I can see if I don't like a movie after fifteen or so minutes.

So no, I don't think it's 'odd' to decide I don't like a game if I invest the equivalent of two working days into it and still don't like it.
