Convince me to buy Skyrim instead of something else.

Even if you'll finally buy it or not, I would just say that it's a game worth trying. Try it at a friend's house if you want, because it has the potential to make you fall in love with it and become a fanboy like most of the people posting here. If not, get just get something else.

Just for consideration, if you buy skyrim your money will be going to fund other projects of Bethesda. Such as Suing Notch more to delay his game, and since they recently finished tearing the Fallout IP from the hands of those that sold them the rights for the games but not the mmo, you can be sure they are looking for another franchise to steal from someone!

:D put those gaming dollars to good use!

Please, please get Dark Souls instead. It's totally unique and so satisfying when you succeed. Please don't get Skyrim because of the bandwagon.

I've noticed that Skyrim has been receiving the "you must buy or die" stamp by all of those who have played it; and while I am heavily considering it, I've been considering other, cheaper games such as Psychonauts or Just Cause 2 instead.

My question is (with only $60), should I spend my rarely acquired money on Skyrim, or should I spend it on something like Psychonauts (which Yahtzee punished me for not buying)?
If you're considering buying it for PS3, for the love of all that's holy get something else.

Now don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the game. However, it's got a horrible bug on the PS3 that keeps freezing the game up about halfway through the game, simply because it doesn't manage memory properly. So far, the only fix is to start the game again and try to play it less before beating it, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a massive world.

I'd definitely get it for any other system, as the parts I got to play of it were pretty awesome. However, until they fix the issue for the PS3, don't waste your money on that platform.
Oh, dude, if I had a PS3 I wouldn't even consider buying this until they got their shit together with the bug issues. Gamesradar put it best when they gave Skyrim the "WE ARE NOT YOUR BETA TESTERS" award. I have a 360, which yes, I know it has bugs, but not the extreme game-ending ones.

Don't buy Skyrim. Buy a good game instead.
Seconded.

The PC version has horrible controls, the Console version devours memory and both have a horribly confusing interface system. Wait until Bethesda patches the stupid thing a few times (which they WON'T do until they decided to release a Game of Year Edition), then buy it.

Skyrim is meh. Slow, bad UI, samey quests/dungeons/towns/characters. Ive stopped playing after about 16 hours
So basically you say you haven't seen 1/100th part of the game, but still pass judgement about all of it?

How odd...
I can see I don't like a book after a chapter or four, and I can see if I don't like a movie after fifteen or so minutes.

So no, I don't think it's 'odd' to decide I don't like a game if I invest the equivalent of two working days into it and still don't like it.
At least the game let you get that far. I can't get passed the first ten minutes (You know, the tutorial / set-up section of the game) because of the controller / interface problems I am having.

I didn't say that there weren't people out there that don't like Skyrim. I said that objectively Skyrim is a great, if not the best, example of a game of its type. So to say 'it sucks' is just false and is likely posted to elicit a response.

Subjectively, Skyrim is awesome to me. Didn't play Psychonauts, but its probably not as good as Skyrim.

Yes, subjectively would imply that it is awesome 'to me'

You missed my point again. Skyrim is a good game, regardless of if you dislike playing it. You won't find anyone that will argue against the fact that a lot of effort and money went into making a pretty nice looking AAA title. Also, aside from a few troublesome bugs that will no doubt be ironed out in future mods or DLC, the game is pretty technically proficient for one of such scope.

That said, its a very specific type of gameplay and while its definitely not 'niche', it obviously isn't for everyone. If you like the ElderScrolls genre/subtype, however, then you WILL like this game.
1. Skyrim is above average, but not great. Its most redeeming feature is that it has an open world, but there are many, many problems with that world, not even including the numerous quest and occasionally game breaking bug.
2. Morrowind was a better game of this style. Skyrim is not the best game of its style.
3. Yes, a lot of effort and money went into making it - and it even has fewer bugs than most Bethesda titles - but define nice looking, and define 'few'.

A list of bugs I have encountered:
-Dragons not interacting with world at all, and you can not fast travel as they are nearby
-Charging up a shout, only to have it constantly repeat the breath in for the first word rather than actually shouting
-Dragon turning into a skeleton dragon mid flight
-Esbern going through his first talk to the player in 0.5 seconds and not opening the door
-Being unable to become Thane of Riften as I visited my house before talking to the Jarl
-Being unable to turn in a book from a fetch quest due to having acquired it before getting the quest
-Being unable to complete an objective for a 'go here and kill stuff' quest as I had finished that dungeon before receiving the quest
-Having the camera and player stuck at the enchanting/alchemy table after enchanting a weapon/creating a potion
-Quest items that should have disappeared remained permanently, bogging down my inventory
-Shops remaining locked all day because I stood near their door around opening time
-Flying a horse over a mountain than having it fall and die.

And there are many more bugs that others experience. Things like the Thane of Riften are unfixable by console command or mod, and that really sucks. For a game which should have no right order to do things in - there is a right and wrong order to do things in.
The reason I believe Skyrim gets so much praise is that it is a breath of fresh air from the games coming out these days, and that the large open world is something we haven't seen since Oblivion.

Now, don't get me wrong, if you enjoy spamming one button to kill enemies, exploring very similar dungeons, and doing short questlines that are somewhat interesting whilst being bothered by half the damn NPCs with a samey fetch quest that will likely glitch - Skyrim is awesome. If you like hiking and exploring, you could definitely do worse. If you're looking for something different and fun in a over the top way, play something else like Psychonaughts or Morrowind.

Just my personal experience:

I bought Skyrim instead of something else. I really, really wish I hadn't, because while Skyrim kept me occupied for many hours, I could have instead been having lots of fun, even if it might not have lasted as long.

At some point I realized I had a copy of Saint's Row 2 that I hadn't played. I stopped playing Skyrim right in the middle of the main story, right in the middle of one big quest or another, and started playing that instead. At no point did I even consider going back to Skyrim until I'd played Saint's Row 2 for about 55 hours (55 very entertaining hours), after which I got bored with SR2 and eventually got bored enough that I managed to talk myself into playing Skyrim some more in the hopes that it would get better at some point.

It didn't. All it did is want me to play Morrowind. You want to get the most gameplay for your money? How about instead of buying Skyrim, you buy that, and Oblivion, and Fallout 3, because each of those games has at least as many hours of gameplay to offer as Skyrim, and they're probably better hours, too.

Yeah, I heard it's fine on the Xbox (if a reset fixes a bug, I don't consider it to be a big deal). Was just making sure you're aware, because getting 20 hours in and then being forced to wait for the fix that might never come REALLY sucks.

If money is the issue then I suggest waiting for Skyrim. Skyrim is a good game and if you are into the genre I do highly suggest getting it however the price will fall in time as with the current trend likely pretty fast. Waiting for a GOTY edition may be the best option for you and give you plenty of time to save up for it.

I also sympathize with your money issue if your still underage I can recall how that feels and if you are a adult for any reason I can relate I have has rough times too. Due to this if you don't mind the PC version of Psychonauts I have a 50% off coupon on Steam that I will give to you. If you want this feel free to tell me.
Aw man, thanks a lot, I can't say that enough. If you just sent it in a personal message, that would be awesome. Seriously, thanks.
Yeah, I'm 15, and I don't have that much regular income. As for the generous offer, is that a code? and if so, would I have to redeem as soon as I put it in?
I am sure the vast majority of us here have been through exactly what you have been. Video games aren't a cheap hobby and without a normal income it is tough to afford. I do like however you are putting in thought on how to spend it.

The coupon is good until March 1st, basically it will be auto applied whenever you buy the game. This will bring the price down to $5. You are capable of holding the coupon in your steam inventory until you are ready to make the purchase.
