having not played the game yet myself I'm limited to what i can say but I do know that I myself personally haven't been this excited for a pokemon game since gold/silver and i can't really put my finger on why. I've been excited since i saw the first trailer for this game when I practically skipped the last generation. it just felt for me that the step from gen 1 to 2 is when they have the biggest innovations of the series with the two new types, night and day and the connection back to the first gen not to mention the addition of it being in color. There were also a number of small game-play elements that were made much better in gen 2. does anyone else remember what a pain your item bag was in gen 1. hard to sort, all one compartment and no way to put something on the select key.
each Gen after that has had minor innovations mostly linked to the math of how the battles work and taking advantage of new hardware like wireless trading and the second screen and of course new pokemon to collect. for me though this didn't change how the game felt as you played it.
i could be far from the mark but I have a gut feeling that x and y are going to have a similar level of innovation as the hardware has finally gotten to the point that they can do things they have been unable to do in the past.
to answer the op question though if you can get the game free with a 3ds go for it. there are a lot of good games out for the system. I bought mine when I found out that the professor layton games and the sequel to 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors would be on them. that and there is a sequel to link to the past coming out in a few months so it's well worth the price.
