Convince me to love Team Fortress 2 if you'd be so kind.

Yesterday I bought and played Team Fortress 2 for the first time, so far it's kinda meh and not nearly as addicting or fun people have made it out to be.

However the only thing missing is the fun, I've got a friend who regularly plays it, you guys and a good connection+average skill.

Now I ask this because I paid money for it!!! because I'd love it if this game could consume my time on the PC. I've been longing to play a good PC game (Starcraft 2 was too competitive for my tastes >.>) and I hope I don't get failed upon again.

Now I know a good part of this site loves the game so please convince me!

Update:I think I should mindlessly give more hours to it, playing as the Engineer can be satisfying but so far I've seen so many easy Pyro-Kills. And by seen, I was the victim!

I'm still not familiar with the weapon/crafting/hat thing yet.

Go on an all talk server so you can talk with other players, ignore the hat craze unless your into that kinda stuff and try out all the classes, get to know their strengths, weaknesses and overall mechanics, after you've done this you should have a perfered style of play and a favorite class that matches that playstyle.

Find a class that's right for you. I personally enjoy running around with a medicine gun (Medic). There's a variety of classes, from that laid back Aussie (Sniper) to the American-Stereotypical Baseball fanatic (Scout), to the Fat Russian Guy w/ a Minigun (Heavy)! WHAT MORE CAN A HUMAN DESIRE!!?!?

I don't think anybody can really convince you to love it. You'll either like it or you won't. That being said, if anywhere can convince you to love it, Esapist will.

I found it to be very mediocre, but my advice is to find a class that suits your play-style and learn it.

Play as the Sniper, unlock the Jarate weapon, start throwing bottles of piss at your enemies... there is no better feeling than that :D

Hate to say it, OP, but some people never enjoy it.

I bought it and Portal some time back. Loved portal. TF2 was a resounding "meh", much as you felt. I'm not generally a bit fan of FPS, but everyone I knew claimed it was the best thing since sliced bread. I played it... didn't care for it. I mean, it was moderately amusing, but I didn't have the skill level of other players (I'm not very good at FPS) so I pretty much spent most of the game dying no matter what class I played.

Engineer was the only class I could survive at for any length of time, which I did by hiding in a corner behind a turret I built. Not exactly engaging fun.

So, if you just find yourself not having fun, well, you aren't the only one.

I'll be honest, with all the new rather bullshitty updates, I won't do much to defend TF2 as the amazingly refined game it was gearing up to be. But I shall mercilessly defend alltalk servers. Find a good one and it might be the best experience of your life.

If you're in North America and they haven't disappeared, I'd suggest looking for a Slaughterhouse server. Great, great fun.

Find a decent server. The Escapist one is quite good actually, especially when the regulars are on, and it's a lot easier not to get stomped there than the other good ones like Hampshire Heavies.

For a beginning class, try Medic or Engie for a distinctly different FPS experience that's easy to get to grips with. Spy is also a lot of fun, but takes some work, and some map layout knowledge.

The best thing to do though, is pick a class which suits your mood. Spy is usually the one I take if I'm not feelin' it like usual, since the playstyle is completely unique.

Also, I've put well over a thousand hours into it, so I'd say there's some lasting appeal. :D

Think of a good class that works out for you in other FPSs.

Now find the TF2 variant.

Using the weapons, mix them up until you find a combination right for you.

And I found playing on an instant respawn server was a lot more fun.

A lot of the fun for me is to customize the way the game looks, and the fact the game has nine unique classes to play which always makes the game fun.

Would you kindly like TF2?

I'd say that if you really want it to click stick with it and try some diverse game types, sift through different servers and play a game or two to see how each one is set up and try to find something that speaks to you. You might just not like the game, but if you want to make your money count you mind as well stick with it and see the full gambit before making your decision.

Everyone's pretty much saying the right stuff. I, personally, love the game and have blown over 200 hours on it. The prospect of the different weapons for every class got me hooked. By changing a class' weapon set, you can effectively change the way the class plays. Because of this, you can go from Nine classes to Eighteen. I'm always trying new stuff on each class, getting better at every one all the time.

Custom content is another big boost. Being able to play on community made maps and gametypes ensures that the game never gets old. There's always something new to try, like Dodgeball, or Prop Hunt. There's just so much to do you can always find something you like.

tl;dr: Weapon customization and user created content makes for lots of fun content to explore.

I found that I didn't enjoy the game anywhere near as much for the first ten hours or so, but once you get to know the maps and classes better and stop wandering around aimlessly it gets significantly more fun.
