"Too old"?

I'm 32. Married. I'm a father. I work as a media analyst and therefore must stay up every day until stupid-o'clock.

Being "old" isn't the problem.

PC's cost wayyyy more that I care for, and instead of firmware update and junk data, I get viruses and esoteric system requirments.

Although, maybe I just have leftover burned feelings after constantly having to pass over games because my computer was short a hundred dollar upgrade.

I was being facetious. It's my fault for not putting it in italics or something.

But hey, at least it's made some people laugh (I think).

Ah, I see. My mistake.

Still, it wouldn't be the first time in these forums that someone about your age says he may be getting "too old for gaming". Hence why I believed it.

Maybe part of my problem is that I kind went through in ten years what old school people did in twenty-five; I was born in the middle of the 16-bit era, saw the jump to 3D, the introduction of analog sticks, the unveiling of the PS2 and gradual evolution (or devolution to some) of the game market as we see it today.

To me, retro is Ape Escape or Spyro. Nostalgic is Bruce Campbell as a space pilot and playing flight sims someone my age had no business playing. Back then was my golden age, even the FPS's, especially the gritty serious ones, had this sense of charm to them that I just don't get anymore.

Maybe a hiatus is in order after all.

To be honest, system requirements aren't necessarily the be-all and end-all. Depends on the kind of games you want to play I suppose, there's plenty of great stuff that can run on a wide range of systems very well (though I'll admit my old Intel Pentium 4 PC couldn't run The Binding of Isaac at the proper speed...).

Plus, the advantage of PC is that you can plunder the last 20 years of gaming for stuff you may have missed. Stuff that's proven to be in working order and often is surprisingly well-supported by communities.

GOG.com, basically.

Maybe your problem is you care too much about reviews and what other folks think? Half the things you're tired of don't even affect me because I don't frequent forums or developer diaries or buy pre-orders. Maybe you should just take a step back from being part of the so called "gaming community" and just play a title every now and again if it looks interesting.

You know something I noticed in your post, you didn't actually mention being bored of games. I reckon you still have a genuine love and affection for gaming and it's power to make you laugh/cry/rage/love/delight/scare and any other emotion you can feel what it sounds like you're angry at is the baggage.

Perhaps not the baggage, but the greater gaming community which seems all too often to *****,moan.whine and do the wrong things because that what people like talking about. It's the same as watching the news too much and starting to think the world will end.

I suggest you take a break from that side of gaming, don't click the links that lead to shitty inflamatory articles designed to make your blood boil. Instead just choose a lovely little game and if you liked it make a thread about it on here :)

At least, thats what I did about a year ago when I got sick of gaming for a while. Realised it wasn't 'gaming' but this extended baggage so I took a break (this website included) for a while and just played the games that looked fun-not reading up about every little feature that might have been, is out on the other console etc.

I'm back here now, but I tend to stir clear of the more moany sounding threads.

Erm, hope that helps?

I have fond memories of playing Tachyon when I was eight

My quest is at an end. Long have I traversed the twisted worlds of both internet and Real Life, as I had yet to find another. Another that has seen what I had seen, played what I had played, and indeed, shouted 'What the hell, Hajod?!' as I have shouted.
You are the only person, online or IRL that I have met that has played Tachyon: The Fringe before. For this, I have a boon to ask of you: Please stay gaming. There are so few Tachyon gamers left now, we need everyone we can find.

Now, I must say goodbye, for this quest may have ended, but my cause carries onwards.

How 'no'. If having fun playing video games despite its flaws isn't enough for you then don't stay. There is absolutely nothing else I can tell you

I was in a similar situation, where I just didn't find gaming fun at all. It was brought on by buying half a dozen triple A games and all of them being extremely safe, unoriginal and merely cashing in by adding an unnecessary sequel. I was tired of spending my money on games that were basically something I had played before with a slightly different coating.

I am currently much happier with gaming right now though, I bought Valkyria Chronicles a couple of weeks ago and am steadily going through that. I am slowly getting through Lone Survivor, but due to it being a bit frustrating I am doing it in sort bursts. I am recently bought Fire Emblem Awakening and struggling to put it down. As well as playing Left 4 Dead 2 when I don't feel like doing much else.

I think you just need to find something new to play, rather than sticking with what you know. I have never really played games such as Valkyria Chronicles or Fire Emblem before, so they are a pleasant break from my normal choices.

As for the whole "Pseudo-intellectual" and "Everything is sexist" brigades, I wouldn't say they are worth dropping gaming for, just perhaps staying away from the discussions where such people are likely to reside, if it is getting too much. It's not worth giving up something you like due to a handful of morons with persecution complexes and chips on their shoulders.

At first I thought it will be a tread about you having no time playing videogames, because of work and some other reasons [sadly, I am THIS kind of person].

Well, a suggestion I have for you is to search for "Secret Gems" that many don't know.
You can look for examples in a list I create in the site "Listal":

http://www.listal.com/list/awesome-unknown-videogames-you-must

What I am saying is if you search a lot, you can find some very good games to play.

Another game that you can play is "Papers Please". Great game in my opinion.

Cheers!!!

My suggestion would be stop gaming for a 1-2 years
And then give it another try
After all you can't eat lasagna every day, no matter how delicious it is ;)

Why should anyone convince you of enjoying a waste of time you do not enjoy?
Do something productive instead. Everyone wins.

Fucking Steam Sales. Justifiably a reason to live, not just to game. You'll find so many games you haven't played and all of them will amuse you for at least an hour but cost you about £2. Some will consume your life and the price will be the same.

You sound like you're getting far too into the whole "gaming scene" side of things.

Maybe avoid sites like this one for a while. It may also help if you stop defining yourself as a "gamer" and go back to just being a normal consumer. If you see a game that you want to play and you're happy with the price, then buy it and play it. If you don't see anything you like, then do something else with your time. Take up cross-stitch or something.

Playing video games is a hobby like any other. You can do it as much or as little as you like.

much as I don't like the "PC master race" thing you have a point

I made the decision to switch to PC at the earliest opportunity last week, haven't had an opportunity to get a good PC yet, money and such, but that wasn't an easy decision for me, I've been on consoles since 4, and I also considered just quitting altogether first, but then I went back and played Final Fantasy IX, and questioned how the hell I could even think of quitting, still switching to PC, when I can it seems the logical thing to do with the state of the market right now and no backwards compatibility (a problem PCs don't seem to have)

OT: you can't quit, it's not possible, because gaming is not an occupation, it's a hobby, a method of relaxation, if someone said they were going to quit watching movies how would that sound? actually quitting would be a bigger commitment than not quitting it's not worth the effort

also, since people are comparing age I'm 22

I think you're just lacking that one game that gets you really excited. Don't worry it will come. As for the community. Yes its a community full of whiny entitled (even people complaining about "entitled" people annoys me, meaning I annoy myself)man children, who act as if tiny gaming issues are mega-tsunamis heading towards the beloved family cat Mr Whiskers, and the only thing they can do to stop it is make fifty threads about it and discuss the oncoming disaster to the point of oblivion, BUT theres some pretty decent peeps. As you may have seen from that rant, I well and truly feel ya bro.
