Greetings, people of the Escapist!

For a university project I'm working with a company that makes kitchen appliances to design an interface that controls and gives feedback on the state of your kitchen appliances. A sort of kitchen organizer and remote, if you will. For it to fit with the user's needs, I'd like some information about people's cooking habits and experience with kitchen technology.

So, if you happen to do some cooking, I'd like it very much if you would answer the following questions:

1. Age:

2. Gender:

3. Do you like cooking? Why (not)?

4. You prefer to cook:
a. quick meals
b. experimental cooking
c. working from recipes
d. other

5. What other activities do you engage in while cooking?
(like reading, watching TV, checking the Escapist)

6. Do you feel the need to often monitor your food while you're cooking?

7. Describe in short (no more than 5 sentences) the steps you take when preparing a meal.

8. Are you fluent in the use of touch-screens?

9. Do you own a smart-phone/tablet PC?

10. If so, do you use it while cooking?
(e.g. as a timer or for recipes)

11. Do you have an oven, microwave or other kitchen appliance with multiple programmed functions?

12. Do you know exactly what all the functions on your kitchen appliances do, even the ones you might not use?

13. Which functions do you use regularly?

14. What problems do you have keeping the interface (buttons, knobs, screens) of your appliance clean?
Many thanks in advance!

(Also, yay, my very first topic!)

Quick Points: Age should be a category, not a straight question. You might offend a lot of people that way.

Anyway.

1:Age: Middle
2:Gender: Male
3: Cooking: Yes. Because eating comes after.
4: e (all of the above)
5: None. Otherwise it tends to burn. I do have the radio/mp3 player on though.
6: Yes - through past bad experiences, and bills for lost pans.
7: Judge requirements: Buy ingredients: Cook: Serve: Get someone else to wash up.
8: Yes, but I loathe them (Not just because of the hundreds of germs, but that's a close one)
9: Yep
10: Nope, for reasons in 8
11: Yep
12: I've got things in the kitchen that Rocket Scientists don't know what they're used for. Mother's legacy.
13: Chaos Defrost: Convection: Microwave for a minute. (this is a very odd question)
14: You can't clean them. You can only wipe the muck around. Knobs/Switches ftw.

It took you 3414 posts to create your first own topic? Well, it looks like you waited for something interesting, so I'll gladly help you out.

1. Age:
24

2. Gender:
M

3. Do you like cooking? Why (not)?
Oh yes, I blame my asian roots for this :)

4. You prefer to cook:
b. experimental cooking
c. working from recipes
(I like deviating from recipes)

5. What other activities do you engage in while cooking?
(like reading, watching TV, checking the Escapist)
I usually have tv in the background, or I'm talking to whoever happens to be near. I usually talk about food when cooking.

6. Do you feel the need to often monitor your food while you're cooking?
Depends on the food, and on how familiar I am with the recipe.

7. Describe in short (no more than 5 sentences) the steps you take when preparing a meal.
Whatever is required to make it taste good ;)

8. Are you fluent in the use of touch-screens?
As fluent as one can be.

9. Do you own a smart-phone/tablet PC?
Not anymore...

10. If so, do you use it while cooking?
(e.g. as a timer or for recipes)
No, I never really did, other than for background music.

11. Do you have an oven, microwave or other kitchen appliance with multiple programmed functions?
Nope, stone-age cooking equipment for me.

12. Do you know exactly what all the functions on your kitchen appliances do, even the ones you might not use?
Even the functions the manufacturers didn't anticipate ;)

13. Which functions do you use regularly?
The gas stove.

14. What problems do you have keeping the interface (buttons, knobs, screens) of your appliance clean?
I tend to make a mess of things, so I guess I am the biggest problem in keeping it clean.

You know, I'd love to have a kitchen with a layout that I'd be able to customize on the fly, depending on what I'd need for a particular dish. Organizing things can be a pain in the bottom when cooking complicated or big meals.

Yeah, I know. I get thread ideas all the times, but forget about them seconds later.

A friend of mine is working on that. He's making insanely elaborate models. Good fun!

Thanks for the reply!

You too. *doffs hat*

Mid-twenties...

2. Gender:
Male...

3. Do you like cooking? Why (not)?
Yes, I do... because it's cathartic, I have a sense of accomplishment afterwards and it's good too see other people enjoy the result of my labour...

4. You prefer to cook:
a. quick meals
b. experimental cooking
c. working from recipes
d. other
Depends, so I'll go with all of them. When given all the time in the world, I'll take a recipe, see what I can do to change it, and give it a shot...

5. What other activities do you engage in while cooking?
(like reading, watching TV, checking the Escapist)
Usually listening to the radio and coming on here...

6. Do you feel the need to often monitor your food while you're cooking?
No, not really. I don't generally time anything. I just prod with a fork or look at it... or something...

7. Describe in short (no more than 5 sentences) the steps you take when preparing a meal.
Really depends on what I'm cooking, but I take out all necessary ingredients and seasoning and generally through it all into a wok...

8. Are you fluent in the use of touch-screens?
Yes... (*wonders at relevance*)

9. Do you own a smart-phone/tablet PC?
Yes...

10. If so, do you use it while cooking?
(e.g. as a timer or for recipes)
No... no real need, I have a memory (re: latter, see above for former)...

11. Do you have an oven, microwave or other kitchen appliance with multiple programmed functions?
*tries to remember the last time I used a microwave*

...

*fails*

I could probably cook over a campfire without batting an eye...

12. Do you know exactly what all the functions on your kitchen appliances do, even the ones you might not use?
Yeah, pretty much... I might blow something up once, but never a second time...

13. Which functions do you use regularly?
Hob... that's it...

14. What problems do you have keeping the interface (buttons, knobs, screens) of your appliance clean?
None whatsoever... because I'm a bit of a clean freak...

Many thanks in advance!

(Also, yay, my very first topic!)
You're welcome... and just a thought, but ideally, I'd like a kitchen that was fully enclosed so that I don't have to run around from the cooker to the fridge, just merely turn around. (To be fair, my kitchen is poorly laid out, so never mind).

Yes

4. You prefer to cook:
b. experimental cooking

5. What other activities do you engage in while cooking?
Listening to Music.

6. Do you feel the need to often monitor your food while you're cooking?
Yes.

7. Describe in short (no more than 5 sentences) the steps you take when preparing a meal.
Decide how hungry I am. Check what ingredients I have to work with, cut up food/prepare food prior to cooking, then cook it.

8. Are you fluent in the use of touch-screens?
Fluent.

9. Do you own a smart-phone/tablet PC?
Yes, but it's not a touch screen. Even if it was; I'm cooking. my hands would be covered in raw meat/sauce/powder, etc.

10. If so, do you use it while cooking?
(e.g. as a timer or for recipes)
No.

11. Do you have an oven, microwave or other kitchen appliance with multiple programmed functions?
Yes.

12. Do you know exactly what all the functions on your kitchen appliances do, even the ones you might not use?
Yes.

13. Which functions do you use regularly?
Timer.

14. What problems do you have keeping the interface (buttons, knobs, screens) of your appliance clean?
The biggest problem is grease splatter from fatty meats, like bacon. It gets everywhere and puts a fine coat of grease over a wide radius.

1. Male

2. 24

3. I LUUUUURRRVVV cooking. In this world there are three things I love: Music, computers and cooking. Before the Army I was a chef and studying at a technical college to become a better chef.

4. E - All of the above. I'll make a good sammich, I'll take a few ingredients and see what I can make of them, I'll work from recipes for baked goods, or use templates for certain dishes, and generally faff about in the kitchen when I'm in a mood.

5. I enjoy Escapist, memebase, webcomics and PC gaming.

6. If I'm making something experimental I'll be somewhat reserved with spices until I think I've found a good balance. If I'm making something I've made a dozen times before I have no problem turning down the heat to check something on my computer in the other room. Then there are dishes like beef stroganoff and Swiss steak, which require they be left alone to cook for hours at a time.

7. Step 1: Guesstimate what I want to make, what I need to make it, and gather ingredients. Step 2: Prepare ingredients for use (dice onions, heat skillet with oil and so on). Step 3: Begin cooking. Step 4: Combine stuff and add spices and seasonings as my tongue sees fit. Step 5: Consume and revel in my culinary ingenuity.

8. I confess it's been a VERY long time since I used an all touchscreen interface, unless you count my DS. Still, I have an affinity for all computer tech, and hardware, including touchscreens, is my specialty.

9. No and no. I don't have any uses for a tablet, and when I get a smartphone, it'll be the kind with an actual keyboard.

10. N/A, though I can immediately see the usefulness of reading recipes off a tablet screen as opposed to, say, having to take up a lot more space for a laptop/recipe book.

11. My oven has a convection feature, but I haven't had much reason to use it yet.

12. Yes, largely through trial and error.

13. Oven's broiler and timer.

14. No huge problems really. The humble paper towel does a mighty fine job on all problems, and the rest just need a green scrubby pad.

1. Age:
16.

2. Gender:
Male.

3. Do you like cooking? Why (not)?
Yes. I can't say why; probably because I like to eat, and I prefer to earn what I have. Cooking allows me to directly earn what I eat. Also, it gives me total control over what I'm eating. If someone else is cooking, they might put, for example, pepper into the dish, and I hate pepper.

4. You prefer to cook:
a. quick meals

5. What other activities do you engage in while cooking?
While I'm waiting for an over to preheat/ the timer to run, I usually read.

6. Do you feel the need to often monitor your food while you're cooking?
Of course, otherwise it could burn, and all my effort goes to waste.

7. Describe in short (no more than 5 sentences) the steps you take when preparing a meal.
I: Decide what I want to make, and find a recipe if necessary.
II: Prepare ingredients/ cooking tools.
III: Cook food and accentuate where necessary; this could mean either adding things to what is already cooking or starting from step I to make something else that would go nicely with what I'm making.
IV: Clean up.
V: Enjoy!

8. Are you fluent in the use of touch-screens?
Yes. Unless the touch screen is inaccurate, I can manuever one with relative ease.

9. Do you own a smart-phone/tablet PC?
No.

10. If so, do you use it while cooking?
N/A

11. Do you have an oven, microwave or other kitchen appliance with multiple programmed functions?
Yes.

12. Do you know exactly what all the functions on your kitchen appliances do, even the ones you might not use?
I can't say that I do.

13. Which functions do you use regularly?
Out of the ordinary, I mostly use the timer.

14. What problems do you have keeping the interface (buttons, knobs, screens) of your appliance clean?
Nope.

1. Age: 30

2. Gender: Male

3. Do you like cooking? Why (not)? Yes. It's relaxing. I find it fun to put small tweaks on various meals I'm comfortable cooking to see if I can make something taste just a little bit better than before.

4. You prefer to cook: c. working from recipes

5. What other activities do you engage in while cooking? Most commonly I listen to music and sing while cooking. Sometimes I'll watch tv and other times I'll just cook.

6. Do you feel the need to often monitor your food while you're cooking? Only the first couple times I try a new meal. Most of them time no.

7. Describe in short (no more than 5 sentences) the steps you take when preparing a meal.
Check that I have all the ingredients I need for the recipe. Cook as much of the meal simultaneously as possible so that it is all ready at the same time. I don't like having to reheat a part of a meal because it got cool waiting for other parts.

8. Are you fluent in the use of touch-screens? No

9. Do you own a smart-phone/tablet PC? No

10. If so, do you use it while cooking? n/a. If I had one I wouldn't.

11. Do you have an oven, microwave or other kitchen appliance with multiple programmed functions? No

12. Do you know exactly what all the functions on your kitchen appliances do, even the ones you might not use? No. I'd know about 80% if their functions.

13. Which functions do you use regularly? Standard heater, oven, broil function. Occasional Microwave.

14. What problems do you have keeping the interface (buttons, knobs, screens) of your appliance clean? None, they are easy to clean.

1. Age: - 23

2. Gender: - Male

3. Do you like cooking? Why (not)? - Yes, I do.

4. You prefer to cook:

- c. working from recipes, though they tend to be my own recipes... classics given a vegetarian twist, or ned ingredients in old mixes. I'll experiment occasionally though, to add something new to my repertoire, and I can, and do, often knock up a quick meal.

5. What other activities do you engage in while cooking? - I tend to listen to music, BBC Radio 4, or watch DVDs on the television in the kitchen. Not so much on the TV if I'm cooking for company, though.

6. Do you feel the need to often monitor your food while you're cooking? - I tend to stir very often, after a few ruined pans at the start of my cooking career, I'm just about weaning myself off it now, after rediscovering the joys of owning pans which have lids.

7. Describe in short (no more than 5 sentences) the steps you take when preparing a meal. - I lay out and prepare (slice, dice, mix the spices, whatever) the ingredients, heat the oil or water in the pan, add the ingredients in whatever order, and simmer... I suppose. Sometimes I'll make another pan of mashed potatoes, rice, pasta, whatever, and occasionally it'll all get mixed together and put under a layer of cheese.

8. Are you fluent in the use of touch-screens? - I can press visualisations of buttons on screens, yes...

9. Do you own a smart-phone/tablet PC? - No, I just have a standard mobile phone.

10. If so, do you use it while cooking? - N/A.

11. Do you have an oven, microwave or other kitchen appliance with multiple programmed functions? - They tend just to have a timer and the ability to heat things to various temperatures, to be honest.

12. Do you know exactly what all the functions on your kitchen appliances do, even the ones you might not use? - Given the limited number of options, I'd say so.

13. Which functions do you use regularly? - The timer. Also the heat.

14. What problems do you have keeping the interface (buttons, knobs, screens) of your appliance clean? - Well, there's the issue with hot oil/rice/beetroot/bits of brocolli getting under the buttons, which is annoying, but i tend to spray cillit bang all over the surface and then use a pipe cleaner to clean under the knobs without removing them.
