Oh, that's terrible
The officer shouldn't have shot unless the dog was actually attacking him, not just barking
Then again, he would have expected it to be a dangerous dog, what with assuming this was a criminals house
In any case, a very sad tale, I actually get more upset when I hear a dog has been murdered than a human being. (Why? I don't know, maybe I see them as being more innocent)

I think the officer was out of line to have his weapon drawn when he approached. They come equipped with Non-Lethal Takedown measures. He had mace. And a Taser. Neither of which would have killed the dog. I can't say he's 100% Guilty, but he is by no means innocent. Even watching the video from his dash cam demonstrates that his gun was out before he even approached the mans house.

The only thing you can blame this officer for is entering the wrong house. Otherwise he did what any officer would do in that situation, even if it was the right house. Why can't people accept the fact that even police officers make mistakes?
In a situation like this a police officer is genuinely frightened because, based on the information given and how he's carried it out, he's dealing with what he believes is a dangerous individual, and training kicks in.

That said, the officer should apologize in person to the dog's owner, and ask if there's anything he can do to make amends. It's a hugely emotional and unfair experience for the owner, and I imagine there'd be a lot of anger and frustration... the least they could do is make an effort on an emotional level.
I agree, but I don't understand the posters saying he deserves a fierce penalty. It seems they also forget that the officer may also feel... sickened, by the situation as well.

Oh my god a human being made a mistake, you are kidding me. Yeah I thought the rest of us are perfect. That is the final straw, time to make a "lets kill all cops thread." May your torches burn bright and your pitchforks pointy, it's cop killing time. Everyone on this planet signed a pact to be perfect, I won't stand a glitch in the system. Almost can't type right now because my perfect world is falling apart. Lets put the joking aside and say he made a mistake, will probably feel bad for a long time.
I certainly hope the lower half of your leg didn't go flying across the room due that serious knee-jerk you just had.

OT: Part of me wants to say "Idiot cop" and leave it at that but I suppose he did believe that he was in the correct house. As tragic as it is, it's not like he just randomly shoots dogs. I mean, if it had in fact been the correct house then people wouldn't care so much.

I don't condone what he did but I understand why he did it.

Not even news worthy, it's a very dull story. Guy makes a mistake => shitstorm occurs; who cares? Am I supposed to be judging the entire American police force off 11 isolated incidents in the past year being posted here? No. I'll do that when the police nuke a school to stop a kid with a gun or something appropriately ridiculous.

A mistake is putting salt in something instead of sugar. Heck, even a surgeon removing the wrong leg is a mistake, but that doesn't absolve them of the responsibility.

This was, yet another, psycho with a badge who walked into a (wrong) house ready to shoot something, and he found it.

Talk about it being an "honest human mistake" all you want, but I'd certainly never forgive the police for it.

Also, when I picture this cop, I think of Mr. Bean joining the police force.

Yeah I saw this when it popped up.

Ugh.

Its pretty obvious racism against grayish dogs. I bet if the dog was a french poodle he'd be walkin' today.

Was this just an excuse to post a picture of a cute dog? Because if so....well played

Why is it that I expect these kinds of things to happen in Texas?

Seems to happen a lot among the "To protect and serve" crowd... these "isolated incidents" are beginning to add up. The entire point of being a police office is you are willingly choosing a life of SERVICE to the PUBLIC and accepting more responsibility and to be held at a higher standard and if they kept their end of the bargain they would be freaking respected unanimously, there would be no ifs or buts about it.

Seriously worries me that their trained response to "Dog barking" is "Shoot in face." Also worries me that a barking dog could trigger a fear response in a POLICE OFFICER. How is this guy supposed to handle real crime if something this benign has him scared into being trigger happy?

Honestly ever time I read something about the cops it usually ends with them killing a dog.

The next story is going to be as followed

"Police officer escorts old lady a cross the street, then shoots her dog"

Okay so you sent me a message to just agree with me. Your pissed off that I was being sarcastic. This is confusing to me, what was the point? Mostly the first thing you just typed. Everyone is an asshole in their own way, I knew a cop bashing thread was going to get started. At least a bunch of British kids ripping on America as usual. Lets just say that my leg did go flying across the room because I have the ability to throw my limbs.
Awh dude! You have GOT to Youtube yourself doing that! It'd be fucking awesome to see!
