People say gg as a courtesy(?) sometimes, though I only use it when I've had a very close match and I've either won or lost, like...if we were fighting each other none stop and at the end there was 1 kill difference, that is when I would say gg.

Good Game isn't so much an implication at how well or how poorly you played, and more a show of good sportsmanship. It's like bowing to your opponent before and after a spar, or tapping swords before a duel. Pretty much any competition you can think of has its show of sportsmanship, and for gaming that's saying "gg" at the end of a match.

My argument is that all common courtesies have hidden meanings. That's why some women like guys to open doors for them and some do not. You could argue it's common courtesy, or you could argue that it's insulting because it implies women are unable to open their own doors.

this might just sound a little crazy, but it might not be a "good game, you suck, but good try" it might a a "good attempt" or "you might not have won, but you didn't disconnect so its good"

not every dude wants to rub it in your face

And if you're really reading that deep into one text biased message over a video game you have your own hidden meaning in feeling that compared to them you are completely inadequate at what you were trying to do.

Sure some people are pricks but when someone is saying it honestly, because they had fun or appreciate the opponent at least not just leaving, and someone who reads too deep in it then replies in a prickish manner then all the one who reads too deep does is aid in creating another douchebag on the internet who will just use it in a prickish manner or say worse.

Saying 'gg' is just like saying 'good' when someone asks how you are. It's a reflex action, rather one that is fully thought out and meant.

I don't really see it as a problem... though those bastards that spam the GG command in CS deserve a violent death.

It is polite to acknowledge your opponent at the end of a game, whether it was a walk over or not. But you shouldn't always say 'gg'. If you thrash your opponent, you should be saying "Thanks for the game."

Im on the fence for this. I know whenever I play CS:S I end up getting more mad about seeing a "gg" misused than when I play Cod4. In CS:S, you'll end up playing a map thats hevily in the other teams favor (assult as an example). So almost any and all attacks are usless. And by the time the map ends, I've been killed by the same camping awper about 10 times. Now, when he says "gg" I get mad. He was sitting doing nothing for entire map. I had to act like 007 and try to figure out a new way into that building without being seen, only to be shot. The fact that he thinks sitting in one place and killing me before I have my head in the room is a good game. It's not, it's a bad game. If he were to move and come outside and we had some close gun fights, I would've thought it was a good game. Now when I play CoD4, I never run into this problem. It might be that I've always played on a server that the teams are dead even. You never run into the problem that someone is just sitting somewhere. So by the time the map ends people have had close calls, good saves, and great kills. So to wrap up, in situations a "gg" in not acceptable. When it feels like you're shooting fish in a barrel, do not say "gg". But when the game has been close and you're running to get somewhere to help a member of your team, then please say "gg".
