At least according to my dad. I thought he was just one of those people that thought "cartoons are for children" and that anime/animation couldn't possibly be mature and should only be aimed at children. When I asked him why he didn't like anime, he gave a bunch of nonsensical reasons (it's not realistic, it's "lame", the characters make weird faces etc. I'm sure you've heard these all before), then he said that people dress up as the characters and have sex with old men for money. Seriously, what the fuck? I tried explaining it to him, and he refused to listen, and he was being completely serious. How am I supposed to talk to someone like that? I've liked anime pretty much all my life, and his utter rejection of it has always been infinitely frustrating, but I had no idea he thought like this.
I would recommend just not talking to him about it. Give him nothing to hate about it and he may change his mind, but that's unlikely.

Unless he has you under house arrest or something, there shouldn't be anything that will stop you from enjoying it right now. You'll move out eventually, so there's that to look forward to, as well. Don't worry about his opinion.

To his defense, most anime that are popular in the west aren't the height of cultural development. As I have grown older, I have also grown less interested in Anime and Manga.

That said there is a lot of mature anime and manga out there, but due to how they are drawn they are often misunderstood.
And to call cosplayers whores is probably taking it a little bit to far.

I was half expecting to see Jack Thompson to be mentioned here...

In all seriousness, the older generations will always hate what we do to some degree. Let them complain about stuff while we enjoy ourselves. If your dad doesn't like anime and cosplays, fine, but the reasoning is just nonsensical.

If you wanna get back at him, show him this thread.
