I don't think women sexing up their costume is wrong. To each his own right? If they have a nice looking body and aren't afraid to show it off more power to 'em.
Most of the time, it just looks incredibly tacky and shows that they don't really care about the character at all; they just want attention for the wrong reasons. It's not, "Oh, nice, you've made a really good Captain America costume", it's "Oh, I've never had such a fucking hard-on for Captain America, you've got massive tits!". It just demeans the whole point of cosplaying. It's the same thing when some girls dress up in those crappy and slutty costumes for Halloween.
Cosplay is considered about as nerdy as it gets by a lot of people, and we all know what a lot of people think of anything even vaguely "nerdy." The hot girls get a free pass because the "nerdiness" isn't exactly what viewers tend to focus on in those cases. As Phasmal said, overweight (or even slightly chubby) female cosplayers get masses of scorn too.
Even among nerds or people who don't have some sort of problem with nerds, people like to look at what they find attractive. And most of the vocal nerds on the internet are heterosexual males.
I have to say, I'd personally find a man in a good Ezio costume incredibly attractive.
Basically, some people labour under the impression that no-one finds nerdy hobbies attractive.
In my experience, the further one gets from conventional popular culture, the more open people are about sex, and the more sex is being had.
...after high school, anyway.
I absolutely despise women who do that. I mean those ones who wear pretty much next to nothing and try pass it off as a cosplay. Feminising the character is fine and can look good but if you had any respect for the character, you wouldn't slutty them up. If you have any respect for yourself, you wouldn't leave the house with your gash and tits nearly falling out, cosplay or not.
That's terribly judgemental. Some cultures/people consider a skirt that doesn't reach the ankles to be "slutty". As far as I'm concerned, if someone feels comfortable enough in their own skin to have it showing they should be free to dress how they like. It doesn't help anyone to perpetuate the idea that some women are deserving of scorn because they noticed they get more attention the less clothes they wear.
OT: I must admit, as far as hobbies go I think cosplaying leans toward the sadder end of the scale. Obviously the "protect my virginity" meme is based on the stereotype that girls don't like nerdy things. However, I think cosplaying regardless of gender is in varying degrees narcissistic, weird and obsessive. Now that I've offended half the forum let me say meh, whatever floats your boat.
Of course it tends to be "Girls Yay, Guys Nay." Most gamers are guys and most guys like checking out girls in hot outfits, which most female cosplay out fits are.
I'm what people would describe as a nerd I guess. I do cosplay, some of my friends does cosplay, I love videogames, books, fantasy and guns. My friends like these things too, which is what brought us together most of the time. Funilly enough, it's those of my friends that try their hardest not to look like a nerd that have remained a virgin for the longest (some still are), while those of us that don't give a fuck can enjoy both our hobbies and our sexual life without being worried about stuff like this.
In the end I don't CARE that people think I'm stupid, silly, ugly and nerdy for doing the things I like. There are enough people that enjoy the same things as me that I don't NEED to care about what other people think. I'm not tearing your ass up for your Eminem cosplay, so fuck off and let me enjoy my time as a kick-ass warrior nun X3.

It's a girl. You can tell but the fairly soft facial features and slightly curved hips. Her shoulders are also a give away; men have broader shoulders that tend to slope less than women.
Given, it could just be a very physically effeminate male.
This is one of those situations where being bisexual basically removes any difficulty from treating people equally. You just get to say "Everyone must take their clothes off!" and people are too distracted by how good you are at gender equality to notice you're a total pervert as well.

It's not that smart caring about a random meme image on the internet. Face it, there are at least a hundred of them to insult every single one of your hobbies.

They are normal people and no less engaging that clubgoer 0815 during normal conversation.
Which isn't that much of a compliment, because if you grouped everyone inside a club and measured their IQ the average wouldn't reach three digits because of all the numbskulls dragging the numbers down.

(I'm really not as sexist as this post would suggest)
In my experience, the desireable women for our lot tend to love guys who have an appreciation/skill that's indicates how secure we are in our personalities and sexuality. For example: A few years back, my girlfriend showed me Fruits Basket. I genuinely liked it. She told one of her best friends about it. After she'd convinced her that I'm not gay, she was asked "Can I have him?" Not to mention that if you can sew a damn good costume, your value as a potential husband increases exponentially.
My only gripe about cosplaying is that if I ever go to one of these cons, I have no idea who I'd cosplay as. This is partially due to my playing a lot of WRPGs. But the bigger issue is that I have yet to encounter a character in a video game who makes me think "Holy shit, he looks like me!"
For reference, I'm 5'8" (~1.73 meters), overweight, have wavy/frizzy auburn hair, a large head, a wide jaw, and legs that are much bigger than my arms. In short, I look a lot like Jack Black. I haven't seen a notable video game character who looks like that in any of the games I've played, even if I were to wear a wig. The problem is that notable male characters tend to be tall, as well as
If anyone's got any ideas where I could find a character that might work, I'm all ears and may be willing to try the game if I haven't played it yet.
OP, I have no idea what you're talking about. Nobody gives a shit if a man cosplays. Nobody gives a shit if a woman cosplays. The only scorn one will get is if he/she does a bad job at it.
I only WISH I had the talent to make some of these costumes. Hell, I would sport them all over the place. In all honesty, I think the people in these picks possess ALOT of talent and creativity.
I only wish I could have made an awesome Emperor costume to wear to Celebration III back in Indianapolis.
My captcha was "if it fits"... appropriate, was it not???!!!??

Nope, yeah, looked harder (think what you will of that statement) and yep it's a woman, and an extremely attractive one at that, but I won't let myself get fooled my feminine men again... Not after last time...
But I maintain that cosplayer 2 is way more attractive than cosplayer 1...

But what if time, money, and a lot of energy went into making a sexy version of a costume? I mean yeah I can understand more if it's like, a girl puts on a bikini and a Naruto head band and says "I'm a ninja" (I actually saw this at a con I went to) but if their costume is well made and is sexy do you still feel the same way? You said it demeans the whole point of cosplay, but it's not like there are textbook rules you have to follow. Some people dress up because they really like that character, some people dress up because they like the outfit and may not know anything about the character, some dress up so they can be part of a group cosplay, some do it to show off how well made their costume is, etc. If a girl happens to have a nice figure and wants to wear skin-tight costumes, short shorts, or whatever it may be, why can't they? What if their version of cosplay is "to make an unsexy costume sexy"? A few years ago for Halloween I got a Cthulhu mask and a school girl outfit and went out as "Cute-thulhu".
