It means different things to different people. Personally I see it as a chance to look silly and have a laugh. Kinda like Halloween, which is rather convenient, as the convention I attend falls on or around the same day.

I would post again, but I'm now just too lazy to keep posting up my photos, so I'll just post my Cosplay gallery page instead and you can look if you're interested. Here you go:

I've been to a couple of Expos, and I think there's one one Leeds I'll be going to because I can't really afford to go anywhere else.
Last one, I cosplayed as Freya from Chobits.
I wanted to use that outfit again, but it has a huge knot in it that I can't get out ;-; I was thinking of cutting it and styling it into another one and buying another blonde wig, maybe.
There's a few I want to do, some I'm a bit hesitant with (the price mainly, struggling with money at the minute) and it depends on if I can get to any more cons or expos.

I don't cosplay because for one there really isn't anyone that I would like to cosplay and two because there really isn't anyone I'd look good cosplaying as :/

I am thinking of making the uniform of the soldiers in this book I'm writing but I lack the skill to attempt such a feat :/

I haven't cosplay yet but I intend to for the next MCM Expo. It was from that Expo (I went there a few months ago) that had finally inspire me to make a attempt at cosplay.

Anyway I was orignally going to cosplay Zoro from One Piece but it's more of a problem (how to dye my black hair into green and getting hold of three fake katana's) so I change my cosplay idead to Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes.

He's alot easier to cosplay since I am able to get all the nessacary stuff to cosplay him (I know where to get it). However the only problems at the moment it trying to find a maroon jacket (I bought a red one so that my default jacket at the moment), geling my hair to be exactly like his (I refuse to buy a wig) and I still need to have a word with my uncle if he is able to make wooden prop version of his trademark weapon the beam katana (and also trying to explain to my parent about it who are not exactly up to date with the modern world).

I am constantly amazed by what the good Cosplayers can do, like that girl who was featured here as the character from Bioshock Infinite. My wife is a bit of a seamstress and wants to get into it, but it is terribly intimidating.

That said, I don't have the figure to carry off about any character. I really dislike seeing people trying to cosplay characters that just don't suit them, it generally just looks daft.

I don't do Japanese anime, but sure. This year's Armageddon I'm going as a Black raider from New Vegas, with a bandanna, a long black trenchcoat, and a nerf rifle that's been turned into a 6 foot long sniper rifle nerf, sort of like a Barrett. But then I'm an actor, so I'm always big on the ideas for going as stuff.

Once, as something that most otaku wouldn't recognise (but should - if I'd done it right - have rung a bell with most brits of my generation). It didn't go well. Thankfully I was able to pass it off as a more general bit of fancy dress, during a fancy dress party where the split was about half and half western cosplay and just random costumes.

May do it again, one day, but I'd need a damn good reason, damn good idea, and a lot of time to get it right. Plus tons of disposable income, liposuction, electrolysis and a confidence implant.

The only other fancy dress I've done in between was a generic 80s hair-metaller, thrown together over the course of a couple of afternoons, and only just pulled it off. Expensively. :p

Cosplay doesnt seem to happen in the UK- Ive never seen or known someone to do it, and most fellow geeks I know tend to see it as a bit strange.

what is a cosplay?
Dressing up like fictional characters, pretty much.

OT: When it's good, it's good. When it's bad it is equal parts pathetic, sad, and creepy.
Isnt that LARPing?
LARP is playing a table top RPG wearing fantasy clothing and waving foam swords etc.

OT: I live in a small town there are no anime cons etc. so I've never done it, I don't want to do it nor have I ever seen it outside of photos.

No. There isn't a story or game that they are following, though some may act in character. Also LARPers generally make their own character as opposed to take one that already exists.

Simply, LARP people play in the closest thing to a real life videogame, cosplay people just want to dress like their favorite character.
Well said.

OT: I don't do it myself but I somewhat like cosplayers. I kinda see were they are comming from, because as a LARPer I know how much fun it is to just play another person for a few hours or days.
I like seeing people putting in the effort to design a great costume. Also: I tend to like stuff people do,l if this stuff causes the masses to call them weirdos. Maybe because I was called weirdo because of some hobbys of mine to.

I take it you're not familiar with the MCM Expo? They're held a few times a year. Twice in London, and once or twice somewhere in the Midlands.

That is badass.

OT: Some of the Mass Effect cosplay costumes are incredible.

And I will get the 10th Doctor's coat some day.

I was Faye Valentine for Halloween two years ago, Radical Edward last year and this coming year I have a school girl Asuka Soryu costume on its way. I love cosplay, especially if you actually pick toons you can hope to look like. It's trippy to see cartoons turned real.

Yup, at the local anime convention this summer (otakuthon), I did my first cosplay.

A team rocket Grunt (from the games). It was pretty fun. :p

Depending on whether or not I have time/can get off my ass to to it, I may do a Sniper from Ragnarok online, or the hunter from Borderlands for Anime North.
