I've done Kyon (Suzumiya Haruhi no yuutsu), Sniper (TF2), Death the Kid (Soul Eater), and an umbreon gijinka (pokemon).
As for materials? um...I ain't all that arts-and-crafty. I can't sew, do woodwork, or make pretty basic props. That being said, Goodwill and fabric stores are your friends. The few props I do, I do well. Whether that means learning something TOTALLY FREAKIN NEW or not, I figure that if I don't do very many props, they should all at least be good quality.
