First of all, I'm pretty sure this is the right area to post this in. However, if it is not, would a moderator kindly move this to the appropriate board? Thank you!

Anyway, I've noticed that some parents who play videogames and go to conventions sometimes make their children cosplay as well. I've first noticed this in the BioShock community, where parents may make their daughters dress up as a Little Sister, for example. However, I've also seen this done on other occasions.

Am I the only one who sees this as a tad bit disturbing? I mean, I can certainly see the value in it if the entire family plays a game or watches a certain show, and they would all love to cosplay. But what about the children who have no idea what they might be dressing up as? Isn't that a tad bit creepy?

This isn't meant to bash those of you who have done this, not by any means. But I would like to know a few things. Why did you do it? Did your son or daughter know what they were doing? Again, I'm curious, not spiteful.

Also, any fellow Escapists are welcome to state their opinion on the matter.

Thank you, and have a great day!

It all depends on whether the kid wants to do it, or is being forced to do it against their will.

The former? Awesome! More power to them.

The latter? Not cool.

Children have wills? I always had the impression they did whatever the fuck they wanted when they wanted then complained about everything?

OT: whats the point of having kids if you can't find something useul to use them for ? I would totally play hide and seek with my kid ( if i had one ) while cosplaying as ethan from heavy rain . JASON! JAAASON! JASOOON !

They're kids. They don't care as long as they think they look cool or like the clothes. Not creepy at all, pretty sure they'd love the attention they'd get from it.

At AX I once saw these two toddlers who were also brothers, and their parents had them dress up in pretty good Inuyasha and Sesshomaru costumes. Absolutely adorable.

But yeah I don't think it matters at all. There's Halloween costumes of Joker or the Scream guy but I don't think anyone gives a second thought about what it means that the characters these kids are dressing up as are psychopaths and murderers.

They dress up for halloween, dressing up for cons shouldn't be a large difference.
I mean granted they don't know it's origins but I doubt kids know the origins of dracula or frankenstein either, it's just a cool outfit to them and if everyone thinks its fine then it's fine.

What's the difference between a kid in a superman outfit, or cosplaying as a game character with their parents?

There isn't much really, except that they may not know what the character is, but I doubt many children would really care. I'd imagine they'd love dressing up with their parents for a day and having fun seeing other people dressed up as characters.

Nah, it's not creepy at all, all kids love playing dress-up! Well, maybe not all, but, y'know, most. I assume.

You seem to forget we live in a world where children are conscripted into all the rituals their parents attend, this is probably the least creepy one of them.

And if we go down to basics cosplay is the same as Halloween.
