Apple make console
Apple already made a console, and it was a monstrous failure.
The Apple Pipin, right? Yeah, that didn't work out so well. Admitedly Apple wasn't so well-known back then, but if they tried to make a home console now, it wouldn't be easy.

Panasonic was one of the manufacturers of the 3DO.
As for Samsung, I'm not sure.

Hmmm, that was my line of thinking, until I remembered how Playstation nudged both Nintendo and Sega out of the spotlight for a nice long time. And then how huge (both fuguratively and literally) the XBox was for Microsoft, even in a market that already had The Dreamcast, the PS2 and the Gamecube.
Remember! Sony's only in the business because Nintendo told them that those CD-thingies will never catch on after Sony had already built most of the system for them.

The Pippin, indeed. I'd imagine that Apple will go as close to gaming as the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad will allow them, whilst enjoying the hojillions of Americadollars that they're making off it.

Awesome guy Pty Lmd already did it.
Admittedly, it used modified gameboy parts (The games and gameboy, mostly), and all I really did was glue it to a friends television.
But the POTENTIAL existed.

Oh, yeah! A-durr to me.

Hmmm... But was Panasonic one of the top 3 electronics makers in the world back then? Would they be able to do it better now that they are?

if i had to pick one illd bet on apple
illd rather bet that none of them do.
having 4 different consoles has created too many exclusives as it is.
also i dont want time wasted on porting a game onto another console instead of improving it.

i once heard that apples technology is 10x more advanced than microsofts.. i dont know whether this is true but i do think they have more advanced technology and so they could make a very good console. But as it would be there first console people may not be too keen on it, as there would be no previous console to compare it with.

I'd like anyone of you degenerates to look up the history of consoles. Apparently, the only consoles that existed with about 85% of every mind is anything made by Atari, Nintendo, or Sega.

Even I don't know how many consoles there are, but if you want to include every Pong console, there's at least over a hundred. It's really fucking stupid, actually.

No, I don't think anyone could throw themselves into the market and make it work. The 360 worked because Bill Gates isn't an idiot. Apple could make an iPlay/iGame/iConsole/iSomething and people would buy it. They'd [those who bought it] would defend their console with a flaming passion. It would not work.

I don't believe that there is any other company capable of putting a console to stay in the race. Nintendo has experience, Sony has a huge working line of products, and Micro$oft is self-explanatory.

Let's just put it this way. You want to continue thinking Apple can make something awesome? In reality, their company is your childhood in Elementary school (if not you, your friend) getting beaten up by that mean bully who never got in trouble because he also had $20. He was the richest six year old on campus. That kid is Microsoft. Apple fails.

I fixed them.

Marathon is the only the thing the Pippin had going for it - Apple's console history was not pleasant.

I believe that a new company could maybe make a succesfull console, but for the next generation of consoles.

This generation has come to far in it's life cycle already, and the next generation is too far off yet.
A new console would probarly suffer the same fate as the Sega Dreamcast.

But if a new console were to enter the market when the copnsole generation is changing, then it might be able to do well.

But then the company need to make a realy solid system.

But both Playstation and Xbox have really massive fanboy armies at their disposal, and they have solid experience to build the next generation on.
Nintendo, well, everyone loves Nintendo, no? And noone can argue that they have not been hugly successfull over the years.

It can be done. But to get there you'll have to push another console from the market.
There are currently 4 good gaming platforms. PC Wii Ps3 X360
Which have both plenty games and a strong fanbase.

So it would be next generation anyways

The way things are going now, I don't think anyone could join the home-console business.

Maybe a new handheld...
But that's it!

About a year and a half ago, back before Atari fell down (again!), I had a conversation with Phil Harrison, at the Atari Live event in London. Some of you may remember, he made the switch from Sony to Atari?

Anyway, I asked him if they would ever consider going into the console business again.
He said that was imossible.
Research, promotion, production, acquiring titles, etc. is a billion dollar investment these days.

No one's gonna join the console wars anytime soon.
Maybe if the markt crashes completely and has to rebuild itself, then we'll talk...

In the future, I see the possibility of gaming consoles being similar to DVD players: the technology becomes standardized, and many models exist that all have the same basic functionality.

I think that this would be good for games: With more competition, the technology advances faster, and the quality of games improves.
