The fact that these could soon exist is really really awesome, and really upsetting, because I am farsighted and wouldn't be able to use them.
I'm sure artificial out-zooming won't be too hard to invent.

Both HUDs displaying information and augmented reality (overlaying digital info on real-world objects) have tons of practical uses ... i saw several videos with prototypes of these, most famous of course if the Google Glasses, but i saw other interesting stuff like augmented vision for fire-fighting helmets which diplays lots of vital information and has other functions as well.

That's one of the prototypes for the fire-fighting helmets --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHIynl9W3GM

simply said, HUDs and augmented reality visors have almot limitless potential .. specially if all the supplementary tech is provided.

For example .. in a super market, food packages would have a small microchip that transmits all info about the food package directly into the HUD from distance (in the form of small augmented reality pop-ups) and you can customize which info to prioritize and even choose which food-types/brands to display info and which don't at all so you can find what you want in seconds .. apply that to everything from police work to doctors and you can see how much potential it has.

I disagree and say it's a horrible idea. There are a million reasons why, one of them being the inevitable skyrocketing death tolls via manslaughter because people will be to busy watching porn and cat videos on their glasses rather than actually paying attention to the road.
If they're driving then just legislate that you cant wear them behind the wheel, in the same way it's illegal to use a mobile (without a hands-free kit) while driving in the UK.

And I'f they're walking then the problem is pretty much the same risk as people on the phone, less so even as it's easier to move your eye a tiny bit to look beyond the screen than look up from a phone.

Yes there will be idiots who cause damage and injury but I don't see it being a massive problem.

It would be amazing, what about one that displays each females likeliness to go out with me?. What they are all below 50%? shucks.

Well google's working on something like that:

No idea how good it'd be but it looks like a good step forward
Seeing as the civilian market is working on something like that, I'm guessing that at least a few of the world militaries (U.S.A., U.K. and Japan specifically) have some form of HUD glasses/goggles for individual soldiers and have had that tech for a good number of years now.
The US military has been trying, but it's just not taking at the moment. Give it a few years and every soldier will use HUD displays.

Personally, I'd like one for SCUBA diving.

I think to make a viable RL HUD, is to ensure that the information being feed through the HUD is not only readable, but isnt cuasing clutter in you FOV.

I would prefer a more Augmented Reality setup than a actual HUD though.

Dude, I am still agonizing over how I would kill to have Adam Jensen's built in sunglasses.
