Could anyone care less about the Wii U at this point?

Of all the consoles. the WiiU is the only one that interests me. But I'm reluctant to buy it because the major draw for me is local multiplayer and I'm currently not in a position to have friends over to play it with. There are a few games out for it already that I wouldn't mind having in my library too, nut it's the local social gaming that I want more then anything.

However, I'm waiting to see how the Steambox and SteamOS develop before I'm willing to put money on new hardware. If it pans out in a way that suits me, I'll likely go for that first.

That said, I always wait a couple of years before getting something new. It's good to wait until the library of games grow and for the kinks to be ironed out. Also, I'm broke. Yeah,

it's mostly because I'm broke. If I had money to spare I would get all the new systems.

Considering I never cared about the Wii U to begin with the answer is NO... The wii U was a failure from the start and the lack of 3rd party support, outdated tech that puts the console behind even the PS3 and 360, no good games, horrible, gimmicky giant controller, it's hard to develop games for .. the list of problems for the last gen console are abundant. The PS4 and Xbone are going to be the only home consoles developers and gamer care about.. most won't even remember the last generation Wii U after a while.. and will start calling the outdated last gen system the "Wii Who?"

I am more interested in the Wii U than the PS4 and the One. As for handhelds, I am anticipating Final Fantasy X on the Vita and Final Fantasy VI on mobile. The 3DS has nothing, the demo for Bravely Default didn't do it for me.

Depending on how X turns out and whether or not some other interesting things come out for the Wii U I might end up picking one up... dunno... we shall see.

I just bought the Premium with two games (A new Mario and a Luigi game) for $300. It should be to me next week sometime. No PS plus or MS Live to worry about. As Yahtzee said, they made a game console whose attraction is that you can play games. Now, they have to follow up with great games and from what I've heard, they will.

Until the Xbone or PS4 come up with something great, PC, PS3, the Wii U and other older consoles, I'll be up to my eyeballs.

I am mostly a PC gamer, but my wife and I bought a Wii U; I love it. The dudebro stuff on Xbone and PS4 can mostly be had on PC; however, I understand some people don't have more than one system. 3D World is my GOTY, even compared to all the PC games I've played. I love the first-party games, and I feel people knocking Nintendo because it's not hardcore is pretty silly. Most of the hardcore stuff isn't even worth playing. Yeah, I'm looking at you BF4/Ghosts. You'd be surprised how loved the Wii U is amongst "real 'hardcore' gamers."

All the consoles look dull, but the WiiU has my interest more than the others. I won't buy until they have something to offer though, I have no allegiances

There's plenty of Wii U games I want to play, the console just seems too expensive for the few games I'd get for it.

I'll definitely get one at $200, probably even $250.

The Wii U's touchpad controller seems like a really weird decision to me, but the other two seem to be mostly going on about how they're good for not playing games, so at least Nintendo remembered what the bloody thing was for.
It was absolutely a mistake. It costs $140 to make which wildly inflates the cost of the system while having no real games for it. It also added a significant amount of complexity to the system which does hurt them with the elderly and casual gamers who made their Wii launch so successful. It was a really bad move and it isn't even as complex as a basic smartphone is nowadays (for example, a camera that faces forward or multi-touch screens).

It's basically a glorified monitor with a controller wrapped around it. This should have been an optional peripheral that they forced on consumers. XBO made the same mistake, but less costly. Though Microsoft has admitted that the Kinect 2 also costs almost as much as the console to make. So maybe it will prove to be just as costly.

I'm not really falling over myself with the desire to purchase any of this generation's consoles, but Nintendo's offering is the most appealing to me right now. Kind of sad, really.
Looking at Nintendo's offerings is looking at a years-breadth of titles for a console that has been out since November 2012. For being out for over a year, their list of desireable titles is shameful. I would not expect them to somehow then turn around and match or exceed the offerings that the PS4 and even the XBO have lined up for the coming year. You've got to realize that the ps4 and XBO haven't been out for even two months yet. The fact that you're not giving the WiiU a clear advantage despite having that year should mean something to you.

Take a look at the WiiU's performance and tell me what they had in their first month that had you excited. Their lineup was almost entirely games that had already been out for months that were just re-released for the WiiU.For starters, they literally had nothing new released from December 14th 2012 to March 5th 2013. A quarter of a year with a new console that had complete radio silence. That's only in the US, other nations had longer gaps. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_U_games

They had New Super Mario Bros. U, which I think was really good and has sold over 3 million units. But that's only one of four titles that have reached 1 million units (I'm counting New Super Luigi U. since it was at .97 million at the last count). Compare to the PS4 which has fewer units sold so far but has 5 titles that have breached 1 million despite only having been in existence for two months. The ps4 has 102 games out in the ether compared to the WiiU with 130. Again, this is despite the WiiU being out for more than 13 months.

Sony has promised something like 21 first party titles within the first year of release and has pretty much full support from the third party community. Something the WiiU has recently lost from all but the few companies that have something coming out on it soon. I suspect those will drop support too once their games have been released for awhile.

So we should not only see significantly more titles come out on those consoles but the next few years should see significantly less going onto the WiiU which has failed to outpace even the Dreamcast in unit sales despite there being a larger consumer market than there was in Dreamcast's era. So, accounting for consumer market inflation (if you will), even if it managed to match the dreamcast it would be doing shitty. They have thankfully exceeded 5 million units as of 13 months.

Add all this to the fact that the WiiU doesn't plan on pursuing online muliplayer for most titles (and have a crappy network) and suddenly there's a lot of things left wanting for pretty much every gamer.

I really get sick of these threads because Nintendo always manages to find it's audience and I don't think that they really have any aspirations to be the BEST home console out there. I think they just want to offer us up something different, and after all the bullshit that people have complained about regarding the Xbone or the PS4 (lack of backwards compatibility, fear of used game lock-out, too much focus on media) I'm surprised more people didn't point to Nintendo as the example that Microsoft and Sony should be following.

On the other side of it, I really think Nintendo needs to stop expecting to skate by on the good will of their fans. Nintendo fans will defend them to the death and fail to recognize any failings on the company's part and that leads to Nintendo themselves getting lazier. It seems to me that they no longer feel the urge to push the envelope with their games and are far more concerned with how you play a game as opposed to the actual content of the game itself. Every first-party Wii U title has so far been good, but not great. Same goes for the 3DS. It's just getting boring at this point.

That's not to say the other consoles don't have a whole lot of other problems of their own, but that's a different thread altogether.

The Wii U is my primary gaming console and the only next... current gen console I plan on having (my brothers will probably obtain a Xbox One and PS4 sometime in the future so I don't have to worry about making such a purchase), so yes, I care quite a bit for it and am interested in how it will do next year.

In regards to the 3DS, I've had said system since the 17th June 2011. The Wii U I've had since it's launch on the 30th November. I have 7 3DS games and about 10-12 smaller digital titles. I already have 6 Wii U games along with about 6 digital titles so I'm close to catching up. It took a lot less time for Wii U games that interest me to come out than it did the 3DS and there are even more games I'm interested next year for Wii U than 3DS. While the 3DS has Super Smash Bros as well as a new Kirby game, my favourite game series of all, the Wii U has Super Smash Bros as well, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors. Also, while not yet officially confirmed, I'm interested in the prospect of Miyamoto's new Wii U designed IP and Pokken Fighters, hope to see them next year.

So in contrast to you, even when comparing the future of the 3DS, I'm much more interested in what the Wii U has to offer next year. I hope sales pick up for it and that more games that will intrigue and excite me are announced.

At this point in time the only game I can give two shits about is Bayonetta 2, but I refuse to buy a console for just one game. Maybe something else will come along that will pique my interest, but as it stands now? Nope.

Then again, I haven't been looking too hard, but whatever.

The 3DS, however, actually caught my attention late last year (Christ, I have to start using that now, huh? I feel old...) with Fire Emblem and obviously Pokemon X and Y. There's some stuff coming out for it that I'm excited for, and that makes me happy because I love Nintendo's handhelds since I think they get some really neat and weird games.

Isn't the Wii U topping all kinds of sales charts? I know we gamers have abandoned it as a serious gaming platform, but the rest of the world has not.

No, it's not selling well the last I heard.

Not all of gamers have abandoned it. I have zero desire to buy a more powerful PS3. I bought the Wii U for Wind Waker and 3D World but have found that the Gamepad really is a great controller and sets the system apart from it's competition.

3DS is topping charts, no surprise really, but the Wii U has picked up some steam. However, the PS4 is still selling more than the Wii U and sold more in December than the Wii U. In December, the Wii U sold about 400-500k units worldwide, which is a huge step up, but in each region it was only about 100k-150k units, with Europe being in last. If the sales go back to say October's levels, only 77k units worldwide were sold in October, then it'd be bad. If there's one positive thing though it's that the Wii U sold more units 1 week in December than the Xbox One, so that's a plus I guess.

I'm just going to continue to repeat the word "Virtua Boy" over and over to myself on the way home from work today. I might consider throwing the word GameCube in there too considering it was almost the death of their home console market at 1/7th the number of units sold as it's main competition (22 million gamecubes to 154 million ps2's) while even managing to have a lower attach rate.

Handheld division? There's no one better, perhaps there never will be (especially with iOS devices stepping up as non-gaming hardware that can do the job anyways). But they have had some significant misses. Even the legendary N64 lost a huge portion of market share and sold 1/3rd of what the new kid on the block sold (PS1's 102 million units to N64's 33 million).

So "always manages to find it's audience" is spurious at best. The Wii saved their brand from what had been a decade of downward spiraling. I really hope their next console knocks it out of the park. I just really think they made some bad mistakes here that has them out of the running for a few years at least.

More importantly, the WiiU has only sold more than the ps3 in one week and that was in it's best week and only by 8k units when both consoles were in the 500ks.

That's the ps3. The WiiU is performing significantly worse than the 7th generation consoles. The XBO has so far exceeded or broken even with its 7th gen counterparts. The PS4 is the only one that has really broken loose but has been wildly inconsistent with sales alternating between HUGE and "low". Likely due to hardware shortages which are their own fault with demand that high. I mean, they went from over 1 million their first week to 99k the second. But the last week released (ending Dec 21) they sold around the amount of the XBO and WiiU combined. Weird.

The WiiU has had an uptick, but not the one it should have. This is the holiday season, everything picks up here. The question is how it's doing come January and February. Will the numbers be higher or lower than last year? Right now, as I said, the WiiU is tracking at a slower rate than the Dreamcast, which already sold very poorly. Thankfully, it's not as bad off as the Saturn was.

Nintendo is just too slow to adapt to change. They need to realize that they need to actually cater to the audience that are gamers. Not little kids who mostly just play games on iphones.
ah yes, this tiresome argument that was shown to be completely bunk ages ago. Listen here: games are toys, making family-friendly games is completely valid. Furthermore, how are kids any less of gamers than you or I? For crying out loud, have you not SEEN how freaking nuts Pokemon is? It seems to me if anything Nintendo needs to STOP trying to cater to "gamers" as they've proven to be shallow, fickle, and insecure. Better off trying to expand your horizons instead of catering to an ever-shrinking demographic that will drop your ass like a rock.

Anyway, the Wii U will be fine. It may not seem like anything is coming up, but we all know this song and dance: people whine about how Nintendo has nothing to release, then they drop a goddamned bombshell like Hyrule Warriors. Sure, 3rd parties are being dicks with Nintendo but that's nothing new. Doesn't help that 3rd parties in general are just boring me at of late.
I'm agreeing with you on this. The Wii U is simply catering to a crowd the OP no longer belongs in. It's that simple. I know I felt a bit sad when I realized the N64 only had a few things I was interested in and then the Gamecube couldn't hold a candle to my interest in the PS2's library of games, but I got older and Nintendo refused to cater to the older demographic. There are still plenty of enjoyable things to play on the Wii, DS, etc. but my own tastes have changed over the decades.
