I think what's more likely is that they used the brain damage as a joke to explain her silent protagonism.

Portal 1 takes place around the same time as the first Half Life.
Nope. After first Half Life, but before the second.
http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Half-Life_universe#After_May_200-

I'd consider this much more "around Half Life 1" and much less "between the two." Portal 1 takes place shortly after the Combine invasion, as it states on the Overwiki. This would only be within a couple years after the first Half Life, but would be around 20 years before HL2.

Portal 2 doesn't take place THAT long after Portal 1, guys.

Judging by the small amount of decay at Aperture Science at that announcer at the beginning (9999 days) it's probably just a few decades. Combine OverWiki says it could've been just 27 years.

- Chell is possibly deaf or at least hard of hearing as the announcer at the beginning of Portal 2 says the emancipation grills can destroy the inner ear.
He also says that this will lead to profound bleeding from the ear. This is just mentioned for comic effect. Just like the blue and white gel being severely poisonous but Chell gets covered in either several times without any noticeable negative effects,
Agreed. We can't truly trust anything we are told at the Aperture facility, either becuase it might be a lie or it may simply have been included for comedic effect. But Valve are masters of detail, we can't overlook a single thing.

You are right, Cave Johnson does state that the White Gel is actually highly toxic (and does not like the human skeleton) BUT he also explicitly states that the moon rock paste is what makes him deathly ill and kills him in the end. So there must be some truth in it. That said, Chell really should be dead by now.

I don't think Chell will be in EP3, but maybe Valve could put some easter egg just like they did with the Borealis in Portal 2.

And could be that she will be in a Half Life 3, but not EP3....

A thought I had was that after the combine take over the earth, Aperature Science is the only major manufacturing center that's left untouched and secret, so if Freeman's gang wants to mount a major counter offensive on the combine, they may need it to make weapons, vehicles, ect.

So while Chell probably won't be in the next half-life, GLaDOS could be, which would allow for some interesting dailoug at least. More likely, though, is that the Portal and Half-life plots will never come together in a way more substantial than references, sadly.

Chell may still have some more adventures on her own though - remeber that in the credits song GLaDOS goads her to "make some new disaster." Also, there's still money to be made in the property, if threads like these are any indication.

I'm fairly certain Chell is neither mute (in character) or has brain damage. I think that was just a jab at her. I think somewhere they explained the Chell doesn't speak cause she's slowly going insane and doesn't want to show GLaDOS she's cracking.

People have already travelled through time in the half-life universe so no news there.
...No, they haven't. Gordon was kept in stasis for 20 years. There was no true time travel involved.

Its speculation, but what character would othervise use sign-language?.
I've never seen Gordon Freeman say a word or ever have anyone react to him like he said something you don't hear.

i dont know alot about the timeline, but i would guess thats a no, it seems a bit crazy, even for valve.

like some have already said, maybe she gets mentioned, or maybe cave johnson, or maybe even GLaDOS.

they are, the borealis gets mentioned in half life 2, and you find its docking station in portal 2.

Play the first part of Portal 2 again. When you wake up, the recorded voice says, "You have been in suspension for 50 days..." The next time you wake up, the recorded voice says, "You have been in suspension for 9,999,999..." Seriously, it says 'nine' seven times. It doesn't specifically say days so it could be years, but even if we go with days, that's still 27,397.26 years.

Soooo...I'm going to guess that as of Portal 2, even though the Portal and Half-Life universes are connected, Chell is much further along in the timeline. Unless she's one of G-Man's other special subjects or Valve introduce a time machine, I don't think it has to do with her.
play a little further along into the intro of Portal 2 when wheatly moves the room around.
"When the facility lost reserve power, it Stopped waking up the subjects."

now Unplug an Alarm clock, DVD player, VCR, or any digital clock...
It flashes 12:00.

Because of the loss of power the system no longer is able to track time and, just like an alarm clock, it simply defaults to its pre-programmed state.

length of time between Portal 1 and Portal 2?
probably bout 20 years... judging by the decrepit nature of the room and facility.

Gordon and Alyx managed to pass through a "slow teleport" when they travelled from Nova Prospekt back to Kleiners lab in HL2. I guess it isn't time travel in the strictest sense but the journey took them forward a week and yet they appeared as if the time had passed in an instant. This has to be significant somehow.

I don't know if we can really read too much into the fact that Chell is supposedly mute. After all, if there's one thing that all the player controlled characters from the Half-Life games (and Portal) in common, it's that none of them ever utter a word. Same for beign deaf too, I think. Chell passes through quite a few of the emancipation grids during the course of Portal 2 and still manages to hear the likes of Wheatley and GLaDOS perfectly well.

maybe chell will use a portal at the same time a solar flare and be sent back in time to EP3 times and then help freeman at some point with a portal or 2. like have some big explosion, slow mo falling out the window after the explosion and just as he is about to hit the ground a portal appears and he ends up flying through and landing in a lake or other body of water.

then chell and freeman have a dozen mute babies.

Maybe not Chell, but I could definitely see a Portal gun being in Ep 3.

Or better yet, a Portal/Gravity gun

Imagine the possibilities.

Portal 1 was set around the same time as the half life series, one of GLaDOS's lines actually says something along the lines of protecting the facility from 'them' Which the combine overwiki assures me is the combine, which would make sense, to be honest.

But yeah, portal 2 is waaaaaay in the future.
not nessarly.

Half Life 2 occurs roughly 20 years after the first one.

Judging by the growth in GLaDOS' first chamber as well as the state of the out house exit. Portal 2 probably occurs in nearly the same time frame (20 or so years)

as i said above, using the 9,999,999 clock as a basis for time would be like thinking it is always Noon because the Digital clock on your dvd player is flashing 12.

The only thing that really seperates Gordon from Chell is the Distance factor.
Chell is in Northern Michigan.
Gordon is in Ukraine.

Actually its set 200 years after, the millions number is what they had originally intended, but it is 200 years.

That being said, portal occurs sometime between the combine invasion and the events pc half-life 2, which occur 20 years after half-life. By the time portal 2 occurs all of hl2s major characters grandchildren are likely dead, so I don't think chell will appear as anything more that a meanness cameo in ep3.
